Quarter in foreground for scale. Geologic information: The Mineral Mountains, located in Beaver County, make up the largest exposed plutonic body in Utah. Rock compositions range from quartz monzonite in the northern half of the pluton to granite around Rock Corral Canyon in the south. Excellent crystals of smoky quartz and feldspar are found in vugs or cavities in the granite. They formed when cooling fractures in the granite were filled by late-stage pegmatites consisting of quartz, microcline, and plagioclase. Quartz occurs as clear to smoky, euhedral crystals up to three inches long while microcline is commonly found as euhedral, equidimensional crystals averaging approximately 0.75 inches in width. Occasionally, large pseudomorphs of limonite after pyrite can be found in these areas as well. How to get there:

To a casual visitor, it would seem that there is a rock shop on just about every corner of the Black Hills. There is a reason for that: This is one of the most geologically diverse regions in the world.
People who are into this hobby tend to come back to the Hills year after year becaus there are so many places to find interesting stones.
We always recommend that rock hounds start at the Museum of Geology at the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology. Even experienced collectors find a visit useful because they can get maps of various geological formations in the hills.
Most casual visitors may be satisified with picking up a rock along side the road or perhaps finding a good specimine in a rock shop. To learn more on the topic, follow some of these links:

    Geology
The geology in the Nationals Forests and Grasslands influences the nature of the ecosystems and the land use. Plant communities, wildlife and fish habitats, landforms, the occurrence of caves, fossils, water, minerals, and fossils are all dependent on geology.
    Paleontology
In many areas of the forest and grasslands fossils and dinosaur tracks have been discovered and studied. The sedimentary formations of the plains and foothills have been especially productive.
