(Last updated 7/6/01) Leading Orgasm Bouldering the Tombstone Wall The most extensive, best-known climbing area in the Midwest, Devil's Lake State Park is about 6 miles south of Baraboo, in south-central Wisconsin. The rock is a homogeneous, dark red-brown to mostly purple quartzite, which fractures very cleanly to leave angular features and smooth, almost shiny surfaces. The new (1995) guidebook lists about 1600 routes, with only 50 or so in areas now off-limits to climbing. Climb ratings run the gamut, from 5.1 to 5.13a.
Devil's Lake cliffs are 30 to 90 feet high, forming a large bowl around Devil's Lake. Most moderate routes follow one of the many vertical cracks. The harder routes (5.9-5.10 and up) are mostly found on toprope, on thin, smooth faces. By very actively maintained local tradition, there is only one bolted route in the entire park, so bring a rack or plan to top rope everything. A somewhat tenuous relationship with park officials has resulted in the closure of a few small and remote areas to climbing. The placement of any further bolts is utterly out of the question, and would probably get climbers booted entirely from the park.
Camping is available in the park year-round, though very crowded during the summer. Weekend camping at the park is almost out of the questionthis is the most popular park in a very popular State Park system. Several local campgrounds aren't much better. Wheeler's Campground, just north of the park, does its best to accommodate climbers well. There is a small climbing shop there, also. (Larger shops are available in Madison, less than one hour to the south.) Several motels are also available in Baraboo, except on summer weekends, when they are likewise solidly jammed with tourists. Baraboo is a town of 8,000 people, and has most general services a climber might need.

Lily Rock at Sunset
For rock climbers from Southern California and beyond, Tahquitz Rock is not just another pretty face. Far more than just good climbing, both Tahquitz and Suicide rocks, located in the cliffs above Idyllwild, are rich in rock climbing lore. Idyllwild is renowned for several key characteristics: clean, yet unglaciated granite, proximity to a large population center, good weather and a mountain setting. There are upward of 300 routes on Suicide Rock alone, and another 200 or so on Tahquitz, also called Lily Rock. Tahquitz Rock is special because, for the Southern California area, its routes are relatively long. It also is cool most of the day and has more crack climbing. Suicide Rock also is high quality rock but it has more climbing routes on its face and is sunny most of the time. The first-ascent party of a climb has the honor of classifying it, and the names chosen describe the route's complexity and unique characteristics. Route names vary with the imagination of the climber, leading to such designations as Spring Cleaning, Knocking on Heaven's Door, Sahara Terror, Blanketty Blank, My Pink Half of the Drainpipe, Coffin Nail and Godzilla's Return. Technical climbing routes are rated up to 5.14 on the basis of difficulty. Some of the most noteworthy climbs on Tahquitz include The Mechanic's Route, a 5.8 climbed in 1937 by Dick Jones and Glen Dawson; The Open Book, a 5.9 climbed in 1952 and The Vampire, a 5.11c climbed in 1960, both by Royal Robbins; and The Edge, a 5.11 climbed in 1975 by Tobin Sorenson. Ivan Couch. In 1970, Ivan Couch climbed a 5.11a, Vahalla, on Suicide Rock.

My grandfather took me (James) rock climbing at the age of 7 (in 1971) in the Sierra Nevada mountains. My grandfather was Hassler Whitney, mathematician and mountaineer, who made the first ascent of the Whitney Gilman ridge (5.7) on Cannon cliff, New Hampshire in 1929 with his cousin Bradley Gilman. This knife edge ridge is 700 feet high and is one of the most beautiful climbs on the east coast. Here is someone else's web page on climbing that features the Whitney Gilman ridge including photo. Devils Tower is best characterized by its numerous, long crack systems. Free climbing routes, that lead to the Summit, range from 5.6 to 5.12 in difficulty. There are numerous aid lines, currently ranging in difficulty from A1 to A4 and C1 to C3. Routes that Summit, provide 500 to 600 feet of climbing, on very solid rock. Climbing is popular , with more than 1,000 climbers each season. About 85% of all climbers are on the Durrance Route, the easiest route to the summit. That leaves the other 150+ routes with significantly less traffic and a much more private atmosphere.Fritz Weissner, Jack Durrance, John McCarthy, Royal Robbins, Bob Kamps, Chuck Pratt, Layton Kor, Fred Becky and Henry Barber (to name a few)have all pioneered routes here. One can try here some of about 100 bolted rock climbing routes from 5A up to 7C+ (Russian categories (grades) correspond to the French ones) in 9 "sectors". Route extension is from 8m. to 23m. Accommodation is in Hotel. Visits to the medieval cave city of Chufut - Calais, Assumption cave monastery, Khan palace are possible. Lime rocks here are quite young, often overhanging, resemble indoor climbing walls
I think that it is logical to start from here, because there are cliffs directed differently. It makes possible to avoid the sun and get adapted quickly to the region. Plus the site often looks like an overhanging wall with pockets. If on used to climb indoor, transition wall-cliff would be easy. Because of overhangs it is possible to climb even if it rains. The rock here is not sharp, so it allows holding hands in good condition for other sites.
