64. Climb On Safely
2. Qualified Instructors. A qualified rock climbing instructor who is at least 21 years of age must supervise all BSA climbing/rappelling activities.
http://www.scouting.org/boyscouts/resources/20-099/
Climb On Safely is the Boy Scouts of America's recommended procedure for organizing BSA climbing/rappelling activities at a natural site or a specifically designed facility such as a climbing wall or tower. Young people today seek greater challenges, and climbing and rappelling offer a worthy challenge. The satisfaction of safely climbing a rock face is hard to top. While introduction of the Climbing merit badge in spring 1997 spurred interest in these activities through the BSA, the proliferation of climbing gyms and facilities has also made climbing and rappelling readily available throughout the United States. This increased interest has made the BSA more aware of the inherent risks of climbing and rappelling. More accidents occur during unit rappelling than during council-managed climbing or rappelling, and more accidents have occurred during rappelling than climbing. Many climbing rappelling accidents could be avoided by having qualified instruction from a conscientious adult who has the attention and respect of the youth entrusted to his or her care. Supervision by a caring adult who fully understands and appreciates the responsibility he or she assumes helps assure safety when youth engage in or prepare for climbing or rappelling. The adult supervisor's relationship with youth should reinforce the importance of following instructions. The adult leader in charge and the climbing instructor share this responsibility. The instructor is responsible for all procedures and for safely conducting the climbing/rappelling activity. The adult supervisor works cooperatively with the climbing instructor and is responsible for all matters outside of the climbing/rappelling activity.

Introduction to rock climbing in Jersey
T he island of Jersey provides a really special and enjoyable climbing experience. This is partly due to the sheer quality of the rock, the routes and the beautiful setting, but is more especially to do with its peaceful and unspoilt nature. Unusually, for what is technically a British climbing area, Jersey rock climbing is fairly recent compared to the mountain areas where rock climbing has existed for hundreds of years, or even Cornwall where the first routes date from 1902. C limbing development had been sporadic and infrequent between the first routes in the early 1960s, and the explosion of activity beginning in the mid-1980s.

Hand Injuries in Rock Climbing: Reaching the Right Treatment
Peter J. L. Jebson, MD; Curtis M. Steyers, MD
THE PHYSICIAN AND SPORTSMEDICINE - VOL 25 - NO. 5 - MAY 97 In Brief: Rock climbers' grip techniques may result in a variety of hand injuries. Minor injuries such as soft-tissue damage, flexor tendon strain, tendinitis or tenosynovitis, joint contractures, and carpal tunnel syndrome may be treated by a primary care physician. Patients who have pulley ruptures should be referred if there is any uncertainty about the diagnosis. Because of controversies regarding surgical management, primary care physicians should refer patients who have a complete ligament tear. Referral is also recommended for such serious injuries as locked digits, flexor tendon avulsions or ruptures, and severe joint contractures. T he exhilarating sport of rock climbing has grown in popularity for both recreation and competition. Rock climbers rely predominantly on digital and upper-extremity strength and tactile ability to ascend shallow ledges and rock faces, using any of four grip techniques depending on the terrain. All four of the grip techniques transmit extremely high forces through the tissues of the digits, hand, and forearm, resulting in a variety of possible acute and chronic injuries (1-10). Indeed, the hand is regarded by some as the most common site of injury in mountaineers and rock climbers (1). These injuries may at times seem minor and inconsequential, but because they can seriously compromise a climber's ability and safety, proper recognition, treatment, rehabilitation, and prevention are essential.

    How Rock Climbing Works
by Marshall Brain Table of Contents Introduction to How Rock Climbing Works Types of Climbing Skills Equipment and Climbing Technique Getting Started Lots More Information Shop or Compare Prices Rock climbing involves strength, control and finesse. Using the muscles in your arms and legs to pull yourself up a sheer rock face takes strength and control. Using your brain to place your hands and feet so that your muscles can do their job that's finesse. Rock climbing is a little like skydiving . Both rock climbing and skydiving have an element of danger. Both are sports where people participate mostly for their own personal satisfaction these sports do not offer much for spectators. And both are sports where potential participants either "get it" or they don't. In skydiving, either you are excited about leaping out of a plane into the abyss, or you aren't. In rock climbing, either you are excited about scaling a vertical piece of stone, or you aren't. The basic premise behind rock climbing is extremely simple. You are trying to climb from the bottom to the top of something. If that was all there were to it, then you would need nothing but your body and a good pair of climbing shoes. The other part of the sport comes if you slip anywhere along the way. Because of the possibility of falling, rock climbing involves a great deal of highly specialized equipment to catch you when you fall. When you're rock climbing outdoors on "traditional" routes, learning to use and properly place this equipment is at least half of the sport!
