HIGHLIGHT - Autonomous Multi-Robot Learning in Inherently Cooperative Tasks
Fig. 1 : Results: a) Empirical studies of multi-robot learning strategies on CESAR multi-robot team. A particularly challenging domain for multi-robot learning concerns tightly coupled, inherently cooperative tasks. In these tasks, the utility of the action of one robot is dependent upon the current actions of its team members. Such inherently cooperative tasks cannot be decomposed into independent subtasks to be solved by a loosely coupled distributed robot team. Instead, the success of the task is measured by the combined actions of the robot team, rather than the individual robot actions and contributions. This problem domain is extremely difficult for robots to learn autonomously because of the challenges of assigning performance credit to individual robots based only upon global rewards provided to the team as a whole. However, the solution to this problem is critical for reducing the cost of programming multi-robot teams, and for enabling the teams to autonomously adapt to new environmental conditions.

This being the case, the members of the laboratory involve themselves in various fields including almost every aspect of electrical engineering (power electronics, instrumentation and controls, communications, embedded systems, AI, operating systems, a little of computer science, mechanics, biology, and yes, even philosophy). The insight and skills gained from developing actual mobile robotic platforms as well as the platforms themselves, serve as building blocks for the upcoming researches of the lab. Highly articulated robots possess multiple degrees of freedom yielding agility far superior to that of conventional robots. One type of highly articulated system is a serpentine or snake-like robot, which is useful where humans and conventional robots have limited ability to access locations in tightly packed volumes. Serpentine robots, on the other hand, can exploit their flexibility and unique geometry to thread through cluttered spaces, reaching locations otherwise inaccessible. We have three snake robots in our lab: The Jet Propulsion Laboratory has loaned us their snake robot to further research efforts in motion planning for snake robots for the purposes of space structure inspection; the Naval EOD Tech Division has loaned my lab another snake robot to study the feasibility of surgical bomb disarming; and the Field Robotics Center has built a snake robot for locomotion in uneven terrain.
