Pittsburgh, PA 15213 Motion Planning for Highly Articulated Systems Highly articulated robot systems differ from traditional robots in that they have more degrees of articulation. These robot systems offer advantages over traditional mobile robots and robot arms, especially in convoluted environments which require minimal invasion. Examples of highly articulated robots are snake robots, cooperating robots, reconfigurable robots, and cooperating-reconfigurable robots. Current applications include: bridge inspection, space structure inspection, painting, search and rescue, material handling (see B. Messner), and security. This research exploits a geometric structure termed a roadmap, which is a collection of one-dimensional curves that captures the salient topological and geometric properties of a robot's environment. Two key advantages of the roadmap in this work are: (1) it can be constructed using sensor data and (2) it is a one-dimensional subset of the robot's space, and thus searching in an m-dimensional robot configuration space is reduced to a one-dimensional search. The mathematical basis of this research extends to non-robotic applications such as surface inspection, camera placement, and injection molding.

Class Built Robot Video Clips Picture Gallery and How to Build 2004 Robotics Engineering Competition Click here for information about the future of robotics. Skills in this class you can learn are… Robotics Electronic Control Logic Automated Controls AutoCAD ... Precision Measurements Each student in this class will learn how to compile and present a PowerPoint presentation. They will also learn how to use Microsoft Word to create required documents and Microsoft Excel to help with engineering problem solving. If you are going to go into engineering, a four year college, or would like to hit the working world after of high school, this class will give you a head start on your competition for that good paying job. If a student is not sure what career path to take, this class offers a taste of different technologies to help with that decision. Students work at their own pace interacting with multimedia in the classroom, so there is no assigned textbook and homework is at a minimum. After completion of this course a student will be able to display to a potential employer that they are flexible, adaptable to changing technologies, and meet the foundation requirements that most companies are looking for today, and more importantly, tomorrow.

at Kennedy Space Center, March 2001. FIRST is an acronym, which means "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology." NASA and Stennis Space Center support the FIRST Robotics Competition, which is a national robotics contest immersing high school students in the exciting world of engineering. At Stennis Space Center, engineers team up with businesses and universities to give area-students a hands-on look at the engineering profession. In six intense weeks, students and engineers work together to brainstorm, design, construct and test their "champion robot." The FIRST Robotics teams then compete in a spirited, no-holds-barred tournament complete with referees, cheerleaders and time clocks. The result is a fun, exciting and stimulating environment in which students discover the important connection between classroom lessons and real world applications.

Robotics Research Group
Welcome to the Robotics Research Group
in the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford.
Established by Professor Michael Brady in 1985 the Robotics Research Group brought together a group of like-minded engineers working in robotics research and artificial intelligence. Since then it has grown to 10 research groups whose interests range from medical imaging to producing scheduling tools for manufacturing. The Robotics Research Group is based primarily on two sites: the temporary accommodation in Ewert House, Summertown and the Jenkin Building within the Engineering Science triangle. The new Information Engineering Building currently under construction is scheduled for occupation by the whole group in 2005. The Robotics Research Group consists of 8 research groups:
