    Intel hammering out robot standards

    Staff Writer, CNET News.com
Intel is developing standards for building inexpensive robots that eventually could automatically inspect industrial equipment or take aerial photographs. Under the Robotics Engineering Task Force, the Santa Clara, Calif.-based chipmaker is devising reference designs for relatively small robots based around its silicon. The company's designs don't focus on the mechanical aspects of robotssuch as the wheels and motorsbut on the internal electronics, Jim Butler, director of the project at Intel Labs, said Wednesday during a press presentation on ongoing research efforts at the company. Currently, these robots are mostly of interest to university researchers, but their commercial appeal is growing. Two robotic start-ups, Acroname and iRobot, are using some of Intel's technology in their products, while larger companies have started to look at the technology for robot projects. Acroname's Intel-based robots start at around $1,000, Butler said.

    2003 BEST Robotics Inc.
BEST stands for "Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology." The BEST program is based on an annual robotics competition of teams from high schools and middle schools. It is designed to teach teamwork, problem solving, project management, and pride in task completion within the constraints of a short time period and limited physical resources. Through partnerships of participating schools with corporate sponsors, youth teams are supported by mentors who serve as positive role models for the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists. The goal is to demonstrate the excitement of advanced technical careers to young people who are nearing decisions on college plans. Team membership is open to all interested students, and participation is without fee to the students or the schools.

Science and Technology : Engineering Sciences and Robotics ORNL’s is solving major challenges around the globe in advanced robotics and chemical process systems technology through multitudes of research and development. The combination of unique facilities, varied technologies, and qualified personnel allows ORNL to take on a vast array of complicated problems and come up with solutions. Whether it be extensive studies of remote handling and process technology for fusion devices, environmental cleanup, or future defense programs, ORNL is dedicated to developing tomorrow's solutions from today's ideas. It seems easy enough, but that simple scenario represents a range of behaviors so complicated that science cannot explain them: perceptions, deductions, motivations, choices. No one really knows how humans make the constant adaptations necessary to work together. Imagine how difficult it is to program similar behaviors into robots so they’ll work as a team. In the past, robotics research tended to focus on developing a single robot that could do all the required jobs on a mission. One problem with that approach is that such a Renaissance robot would need to have an enormous range of capabilities. A bigger problem is that one malfunction in it could scratch the whole mission. ORNL is focusing instead on developing multiple, less-complex robots that can work in teams to accomplish missions. Related Links A Service of the

    ABOUT US
Our research activities are focused on the design and control of a class of robotic systems worn or operated by humans to augment human mechanical strength, while the wearer's intellect remains the central control system for manipulating the robot. Human power extenders can be used to maneuver heavy loads with great dexterity, speed, and precision, in factories, shipyards, airports, construction sites, and warehouses.
Our research work on fundamentals of human power augmentation has resulted in a wealth of knowledge and experience in various robotic disciplines such as force control, impedance control, sensors, locomotion, compact transmission systems, advanced haptic devices, DSP embedded controllers, biomemtic systems, humanoid robots, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric actuators.
