A Robotics Engineering Approach to Modeling Receptor-Ligand Interactions
A primary goal of modern bioengineers is to understand cell behavior in terms of molecular properties and regulate cell function. In such a complex problem, the study of molecular interactions is a key component. Ideally, one would like to model receptor-ligand interactions to a degree that can verify and predict experimental data. The potential of such modeling for biomedicine and bioengineering is enormous: numerous hypotheses for receptor behavior will be tested in simulation leading to the development of new therapeutics.
The general objective of the proposal is to establish a unified and coherent framework for modeling receptor-ligand interactions inspired by a robotics engineering approach. Our focus is the analysis of molecular kinematics, molecular motion and molecular conformations that are relevant to receptor-ligand interactions. We adopt a robotics engineering approach because there is a direct analogy in the modeling of molecules and robots that permits the application of methods that have been developed for robots to molecules.
The specific aims of the proposal are:
  • To implement a robotics engineering based parameterization for treating molecular geometry and optimize it for molecular kinematics and energy calculations.

Real-Time Communications (RTC) is an interprocess communications middleware software library used by re to integrate robotic subsystems. RTC is also utilized by many organizations including NASA, Caterpillar, Inc., Network Photonics, and Carnegie Mellon University. RTC is a compact interprocess communications toolkit that allows C/C++ programmers to write reliable, robust, interprocess communications code, without having to be an expert in networking. RTC relieves the programmer from having to deal with arduous networking issues such as byte-ordering or memory model differences between various computing platforms. Currently, RTC uses TCP/IP as its primary communication protocol. The shareware version of RTC is available for academic and research purposes only. No commercial license is hereby granted. Copying and other reproduction is authorized only for research, education, and other non-commercial purposes. No warranties, either expressed or implied are made regarding the operation, use, or results of the shareware version of RTC. The shareware version of RTC is only available for: Linux 2.x for x86; QNX 6 for x86; Windows NT,2000, XP for x86. RTC no longer supports: DOS; Windows 3.1,95,98; HP-UX; Irix; SunOS; Solaris; QNX 4; VxWorks. RTC is available for commerical use only under a license agreement.
