On Prohibition, speakeasies and Jazz
(Audio Excerpt from JAZZ A Film by Ken Burns) But for many of the millions of people for whom the 1920s never roared at all, fearful of such rapid change and nostalgic for the small-town America of the turn of the century, jazz music came to seem not merely an annoyance but a threat, one more cause of loosening morals and frightening dislocation. Ragtime had been bad enough, with its insinuating rhythms and daring couple-dancing, but the jumpy, rancorous version of New Orleans polyphony projected by the Original Dixieland Jazz Band and many of its imitators seemed much worse. "As I understand it," said Professor Henry Van Dyck of Princeton University, "it is not music at all. It is merely an irritation of the nerves of hearing, a sensual teasing of the strings of physical passion. Its fault lies not in syncopation, for that is a legitimate device when sparingly used. But "jazz" is an unmitigated cacophony, a combination of disagreeable sounds in complicated discords, a willful ugliness and a deliberate vulgarity." The editor of Musical Courier reported on a poll of academically trained musicians: most found "the 'ad libbing' or 'jazzing' of a piece ... thoroughly objectionable," he said, "and several of them advanced the opinion that this Bolshevistic smashing of the rules and tenets of decorous music" spelled disaster for American music.

The 1920s page is offline indefinitely. Thousands of youstudents, educators and othershave written and complemented this web site. I am proud of the recognition and awards it has received from national library, goverment, and educational institutions. A number of changes need to be made to the site's information, and the design and structure are in dire need of revamping. Also, the amount of time I've had to give to responding to various requests related to the site has been too overwhelming. Rather than be rude and ignore e-mailswhich I have been forced to do because of career and personal pressuresI've chosen to take the site down for the time being. I do not know when time will again permit me to improve, reactivate and maintain the site. If you are desperate for information from the site, you can probably find old copies of it through a google.com search and use the cache feature to access the content. I no longer can respond to any requests related to the site. Thanks again for everyone's support, compliments and input. I hope to be able to make this resource available again to the hundreds of thousands of children and teachers around the world who have benefited from it. Sincerely, Kevin

64. The "Roaring Twenties".
Food was plentiful and cheap thanks to the vast quantity produced on american farms. Butthe roaring twenties was also the great age of popular entertainment
http://www.schoolshistory.org.uk/america/roaringtwenties.htm
SchoolsHistory.org.uk New! The "Roaring Twenties". The "Roaring Twenties". Most Americans were unconcerned about the dark side of life. They were too busy enjoying the prosperity of the 1920s. American industry had expanded during the Great War, making weapons, uniforms, equipment etc. This expansion continued after the war, helped by America's massive reserves of raw materials and by high tariffs (import duties on foreign goods).Tariffs made foreign goods dearer, so American goods were bought. Some industries were also given subsidies (cash support), which increased their profits. So there was a boom(economic expansion).
Things to ask yourself: Why was America prosperous in the 1920's?

    B. Fear of Bolshevism
      1. Success of Russian Revolution combined with epidemic of strikes frightened Americans into "Red Scare" mentality of 1919-1920 2. Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer arrested 6000 suspected radicals and deported many following several bombings
    C. Fear of foreigners
      1. Over 800,000 immigrants came to America in 1920-21, with 2/3 coming from southern and eastern Europe 2. To preserve the northern European racial composition of America, quotas were set up to restrict new immigration in a series of acts, including the National Origins Act of 1924 which cut immigration to 2% of each nationality from the 1890 census. 3. Sacco and Vanzetti, two Italian anarchists, were executed in 1927 for murder despite protests from within and outside the U.S. that anti-immigrant attitudes prejudiced their trial.

COVER BY JOHN HELD JR. "They're all desperadoes, these kids, all of them with any life in their veins; the girls as well as the boys; maybe more than the boys." - from " Flaming Youth ," by Warner Fabian
The flapper, whose antics were immortalized in the cartoons of John Held Jr., was the heroine of the Jazz Age. With short hair and a short skirt, with turned-down hose and powdered knees - the flapper must have seemed to her mother (the gentle Gibson girl of an earlier generation) like a rebel. No longer confined to home and tradition, the typical flapper was a young women who was often thought of as a little fast and maybe even a little brazen. Mostly, the flapper offended the older generation because she defied conventions of acceptable feminine behavior. The flapper was "modern." Traditionally, women's hair had always been worn long. The flapper wore it short, or bobbed. She used make-up (which she might well apply in public). And the flapper wore baggy dresses which often exposed her arms as well as her legs from the knees down. However, flappers did more than symbolize a revolution in fashion and mores - they embodied the modern spirit of the Jazz Age. LOUISE BROOKS

Notes from 10/23 Warren Harding , a Republican, was elected president in 1920. He and his successor Calvin Coolidge (Harding died in office in 1923) reflected the mood of the country, advocating isolationism as well as disavowing many of the ideals of the Progressive era. The country's economy was certainly booming in 1920. Automobile production skyrocketed. Prior to the 1920's, the automobile was largely functional; with the economic boom following World War I, the car became an important American status symbol. The rapid post-war proliferation of the automobile led to ever expanding urban/suburban communities, a trend that had begun during the 1880's and 1890's with the development of public transportation systems. The growing number of middle class urban households also clamored for cheap electrical appliances, such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines and refrigerators. The modern advertising industry was born. Urban areas flourished; for the first time in U.S. history, more people lived in cities than in the countryside. With urbanization, old community ties of home, church and school were weakening. In the new metropolises, people lived among strangers, and not a few experienced the isolation that can occur even in the middle of a crowd. Families became smaller, as women got access to new forms of birth control. The 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote in 1920, but opportunities for women in the workplace remained limited. Between 1920 and 1930, there was only a 1% increase in the number of women workers. Divorce rates also increased during this period, and a greater percentage of

Introduction
The 1920's was a truly exciting decade in American history today we might say it 'rocked;' back then, it 'roared.' In all aspects of life, fashion, music, literature, sports, economics, social reform, politics, things were happening, and happening fast. Using the Internet, you'll soon know just what was going on.
The Quest
The radio was a big part of everyday life in the 20's. Your task will be to create a radio broadcast that your team can perform by researching a variety of sites on the decade and writing an historically accurate program.
The Process and Resources
In this WebQuest you will be working together with a group of students in class. Each group will contribute to the Task by providing one segment of the broadcast. As a member of the group you will explore Webpages about The Roaring 1920's. Because these are real Webpages we're tapping into, not things made just for schools, the reading level might challenge you. The group responsible for segment 1 will write one national news story, and one story about the economic condition of the nation. The group responsible for segment 2 will write one story about crime or criminals, and one sports story. The group responsible for segment 3 will write one story about fashion, and one about either music or literature. The group responsible for segment 4 will write one commercial, and interview one non-political person living at the time.

In the 1920's, the United States automobile industry began an extraordinary period of growth. Henry Ford increased the use of the assembly line in manufacturing, thus reducing the time taken to manufacture each product. Also, assembly lines reduced the costs of manufacturing. Average citizens were able to purchase cars, unlike earlier. Due to this increase in the production of cars, industries that produced products utilized in cars also grew; petroleum, steel, and glass companies earned more profits. Also, the states began to build roads and highways in rural areas. Gasoline stations were put up, further increasing the growth of the petroleum industry. In addition, autombile dealers introduced the installment plan, that idea spread to other parts of business. Thus, the automibile industry's growth had repurcussions throughout the nation. edit
Prohibition
In 1851, the state of Maine passed a law banning the production and sale of intoxicating liquors. Twelve more states followed by 1855. During the Civil War, however, the movement to prohibit alcohol was stalled. Saloons, which focused on the sale of alcohol, sprang up across the country. However, many viewed saloons as immoral; by 1916, almost half the states had banned saloons. The election of that year focused on Prohibition (the banning of the manufacture and sale of intoxicating liquors.)

Memorable Moments from Great Movies! Great Moments and Scenes from Memorable Movies! Great Lines and Quotes from the Movies! Great Movies with Great Dialogue! Great Stars and Great Characters in Great Moments from Great Movies! The Roaring Twenties (1939) is action director Raoul Walsh's first gangster film (and first film for Warner Bros.). [Walsh replaced director Anatole Litvak at the last minute.] This newsreel-like, semi-documentary, authentic-looking film, with both hard-hitting gangster genre action and romantic sentiment, shares a lot of similarities and is reminiscent of the greatest gangster films of the 30s, including Little Caesar (1930) Scarface: The Shame of the Nation (1932) , and Public Enemy (1931) . All of these films portray bootlegging, numerous murders, gangster life, and the death of the hero at the conclusion. At the end of the thirties, Walsh's 'social history' film eulogizes and recreates the entire Jazz Age decade, Prohibition and its repeal (including the process of manufacturing bathtub gin), and the Depression era (through the mid 1930s) with an expansive, eulogistic perspective within an historical framework. However, the protagonist is portrayed as a reluctant victim of social and environmental conditions during the time period - as a returning WWI doughboy to a 1918 America of unemployment, he is lured to a corruptible life as a small-time hood after being denied his old job and after taking advantage of poorly-conceived government laws. Then, as a struggling taxi-cab driver after a change of fortune during the Depression, he becomes a poverty-stricken, alcoholic "forgotten man" in the 30s.
