The roaring twenties was one of the most prosperous eras in american history. How did this prosperity encourage the violation of Prohibition?
    http://www.aetv.com/class/admin/study_guide/archives/aetv_guide.0155.html
    The Prohibition Era
It's remembered as a glamorous era of bootleggers, bathtub gin, illicit speakeasies and Al Capone's whiskey-fueled empire. This extraordinary program journeys from the mining towns of Kansas to the rum-running island of St. Pierre to tell the real, unvarnished story of Prohibition. Take a fascinating look at the saloon-smashing Carrie Nation, the teetotaling tycoon Henry Ford, and lawyer-turned-bootlegger George Remus. Discover how Prohibition's first President, Warren Haring, served cocktails in the White House, and meet Al Capone's older brother-a successful enforcement agent in Nebraska. The Prohibition Era is a stirring trip through one of American history's most uninhibited times. It would be useful for classes on American History, Women's History, Economic History and American Culture. It is appropriate for middle school and high school. The Roaring Twenties As the 1920s dawned, temperance leaders celebrated the birth of an alcohol-free nation. But for the rest of America, Prohibition meant the beginning of the world's most exuberant cocktail party. From coast to coast, Americans toasted newfound prosperity in raucous speakeasies. Breaking the law became glamorous, and bootleggers became millionaires. Lawyer George Remus, the inspiration for F. Scott's Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, made $40 million running an underground bottling plant. Bill McCoy, the most revered rum-runner of the era, became a national hero as a smuggler of the finest wines and spirits from Europe.

THE FORUM Public Reactions to the Roaring Twenties
Public Reactions to the Roaring Twenties
Kara Humphries The decade was the 1920s. Some like to characterize the "20s" as the "New Era" or the "Roaring Twenties," for it was a time like no other in previous American history. America was experiencing post WWI euphoria, for the 1920s was a decade of rapid and considerable economic, political, and social growth. America was transforming into a modernized nation. However, under this changing society was even larger cultural, political, and social turmoil. Organizations that clung to traditional American values and practices began to present themselves in response to the new modern developments. Thus, the American population reacted to these unique innovations in two distinct ways. Society either grasped the era's ideas with profound enthusiasm, taking an active role in allowing them to shape a new way of living and thinking, or rebelled against the changing traditions and remained stagnant in their values and beliefs. Advertising and mass production began to take a major role in the shaping of national markets for products during the 1920s. These innovative practices brought about massive consumerism and a new way of American living. The American population abandoned the old and intertwined the new into their daily lives. "To keep house with what was available a half century ago was an art handed down from generation to generation, which happily has been lost, except among the newly arrived foreign born."

The Roaring Twenties > Customer Review #1: Decade of parties, corruption, success and shock.

Stein writes an excellent yet simple book to explain the tumultuous years between 1920 and 1930. Described succinctly as the decade when "the parties were bigger...the pace was faster...the morals were looser and the liquor was cheaper" (F. Scott Fitzgerald)..it started when the nation was recently scarred by a war and ended when humbled by depression.
The United States was looking for some fun and relief. Prohibition caused major division and illegal actives to flourish. Folks went wild, "speakeasies" became as popular as backyard stills. Listening to a radio became the most popular home pastime in this decade. The automobile was perhaps the most widespread invention. Just for the rich a few years previous, this decade brought mass production, lowered the prices and by 1929, 23 million cars were on the road.

The Politics of Prosperity: The 1920s
World War I may not have made the world safe for democracy, but it did help to lay the groundwork for a decade of American economic expansion. The 1920s saw the growth of the culture of consumerismmany Americans began to work fewer hours, earn higher salaries, invest in the stock market, and buy everything from washing machines to Model T Fords. The culture of consumerism of the 1920s changed the politics of American society and set the tone for American attitudes about money in coming decades. Some questions to keep in mind:
  • What role did new technology play in shaping the economy of the 1920s? The culture of the 1920s? Compare the relationship between big business and government during the 1920s to that of the Gilded Age. How did the nation's lasting love affair with the automobile affect American society? The American economy? If Ronald Reagan, Herbert Hoover, and Andrew Mellon walked into a bar where a sign stated, "Sorry, our drinks don't trickle down" who would be the first to leave?

Shortly after Carl Greenleaf became president of the company, he noted that saxophones were being produced at a modest rate of about 100 per month. According to his own recollections, the "saxophone trade increased quite rapidly [in the 1920s] and the saxophone business almost immediately became the most profitable part of the business. Every effort was made to increase production and it was built up very materially" (unpublished autobiographical sketch). According to the company's 1922 annual report, saxophone production had increased to about 150 units per day.
