Dunge Valley Gardens are 1000 feet above sea level and are situated close to Whaley Bridge, in the Peak National Park. These privately owned and beautiful gardens, planted and maintained by David and Elizabeth Ketley are open to the public. The couple have lived at Dunge Valley since 1976, and started planting the gardens in 1982, initially with trees and shrubs to provide a natural windbreak for the more tender species. Click on any of the photographs for a larger view The garden is a 'must visit' garden, designed in a natural ravine, with a natural stream running through. The valley floor and sides are planted with a wide variety of rhododendrons and a multitude of other woodland plants and bulbs. All the photographs shown here were taken in mid June.

Rhododendrons, most Azaleas, Pieris and Mountain Laurels all have similar cultural requirements that must be met if they are to be successfully cultivated in colder areas. They all need a porous or open acid soil. These plants are shade tolerant but not shade loving. They are best planted in an area that receives morning sun with shade from mid to late afternoon in summer and winter. As they need protection from the coldest winter winds, they should not be planted in open, windy areas unless they are well protected through the winter with burlap screening. The selections available from Sheridan Nurseries have proven to be the hardiest and best for our areas and include many of the new varieties that have been tested by local members of the Rhododendron Society. Soils
Rhododendrons and their companion plants must have a well-drained, yet moist, acidic soil that is high in organic matter. A light sandy loam soil with added peat moss is also ideal but most soils in our area are heavy clays with poor drainage.

With over 850 species and 25,000 cultivars, rhododendrons provide great diversity for the garden. Whether ground-hugging alpines or forest tree species, exotic and tender vireyas or the most cold-resilient hardy hybrids, there are rhododendrons to suit most lime-free gardens. Even this traditional restriction to acid soils is being challenged by plant breeders selecting for lime-tolerance. An experiment examining these lime tolerant rhododendrons is underway at RHS Garden Wisley.

The 19th century brought technological change and impressive engineering feats. It also brought a new class of wealthy industrialists who competed fiercely for unusual and exotic plants for their gardens and greenhouses. It was their money that funded the intrepid plant hunters who returned from the East with new species beyond the wildest dreams of gardeners of the day. Until then, the rhododendron had attracted little interest in the West, but each expedition brought a range of new colours, forms and fragrances, paving the way for the thousands of hybrids that include some of the most spectacular flowers and superb foliage known to horticulture today. The splendour of these impressive plants belies the fact that they can be remarkably easy to grow and maintain.

Scripps Howard News Service Gardeners who don't believe our climate is changing haven't been paying very close attention. Either that or they aren't growing rhododendrons and azaleas. Whether we're simply going through a warming cycle, dominated by higher temperatures and less precipitation, or whether the globe is really heating up, rhododendrons and azaleas aren't happy about the shift in the status quo. Former stalwarts of Northeastern gardens, these popular plants are now hurting and their distress has gardeners wondering about their future in our yards.

    Gardener's Diary : Episode GRD-1105

The Lays at work in their garden. by Martha Tate, special to HGTV.com David and Mary Lloyd Lay's 22-year-old woodland garden lies on the banks of a Virginia river that flows into the Chesapeake Bay. The Lays' homein a sparsely inhabited, historic region called Northern Neckis reached by a dirt road that winds through woods and fields. There was no design plan for the five-acre garden that surrounds their one-story, contemporary-style house, but the property is blessed with beautiful mature hardwoods and native understory plants like mountain laurel. For years, the Lays have joked about husband and wife "turf wars." David, an inveterate plant collector, is responsible for the plantings (mostly azaleas, rhododendrons and Japanese maples) in front of the house and along the driveway. In the back of the house, Mary Lloyd has commandeered space for perennials such as epimediums, hostas, columbine, lamb's ear, corydalis, peonies and iris. She has also mixed in small flowering shrubs like spireas and deutzias.

The garden is less of a specialist garden than the Rose and Camellia Gardens so that while the main theme is the Ericaceae family, the genus Rhododendron in particular, other complementary plants selected and bred for the garden are included. Most of these complementary plants have a geographic association with Rhododendrons. It is not intended to develop a large and pure Rhododendron collection as several excellent Rhododendron Gardens have been developed in areas of NZ with a better-suited climate. While most of the Rhododendrons are cultivars there are some comparative Rhododendron species. The area of flat lawn is kept open for games, large marquees, etc. The large white trunked Mana Gum is Eucalyptus viminalis. South American plants surround the Hispanic Landing. The Landing was sponsored by the local Hispanic Society. It features a copy of a famous Roberto Burl Marx sculpture and a landing with the names of all of the Hispanic Countries. The name ‘Landing of the Ambassadors’ and the design reflect the original intention to use this feature as the venue to celebrate the first day of spring as celebrated by Hispanic societies. In the first 2 years representatives from South American embassies and important guests arrived by boat. While bands played they processed up the steps lined by children holding all of the Hispanic nations flags. The flags were then placed in the holes in the black and white sculpture.

It can safely be stated that all of Stanley Park is one great big garden. Two specific areas draw the most attention from visitors with gardening interests to the Park. One is the formal Rose Garden and the other is the Ted and Mary Greig Rhododendron Garden. Each has a central theme but include areas that encompass other plantings that change with the seasons. The Rose Garden is situated just steps away from the Georgia Street entrance to the park (less than a 5 minute walk) while the Rhododendron Garden is placed around the the pitch and putt golf course and the tennis courts.
Additional planted areas include the front of the Stanley Park Pavilion which is close to the Rose Garden and around the Parks Board offices at the Beach Street entrance to the park. As well many locations contain flowering trees and bushes that are not part of designated garden areas.

    http://www.cce.cornell.edu/suffolk/grownet/treselct/rhodoli.html
Rhododendrons for Long Island Gardens Rhododendrons have always had a special charisma. They developed a reputation for being the royalty of shrubs, probably because they were an expensive indulgence by the owners of the great estate gardens of Britain and early fine gardens in the United States. William R. Coe developed his estate and gardens at Planting Fields after World War I by importing hundreds of rhododendron plants from England. Today a wide variety of rhododendrons is available in nurseries to be enjoyed by many Long Island gardeners. Visits to Planting Fields in April until early June acquaint you with great numbers of handsome flowering rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many other fine flowering trees and shrubs. The genus Rhododendron is extremely large, with 900 to l,000 species found growing in many parts of the world. The largest numbers are native to Japan and in mountains and valleys from China to India. Only a handful are native to America's forests, valleys and mountains. One of these, Rhododendron catawbiense , a native of the Smoky Mountains, was introduced to England about l860. This hardy species was crossed with other more tender species from China and gave rise to a host of hardy hybrid rhododendron varieties. These "ironclads" were the principal varieties imported by Coe and others for their gardens at the beginning of the century. Many of these fine old hardy varieties are readily available in nurseries today. ‘Roseum Elegans', 'Roseum Pink' and 'Catawbiense Album' and are still highly recommended.

    Rhododendrons in Spring

Spring is rhododendron time. The amazing mass of blooms, the fragrance, the range of colours, flower form and texture simply take your breath away.
The heavy, simple flowers of 'Lady Dorothy Ella' and species such as R. nuttallii vie for attention with fire-engine red 'Tupare' and the huge flower-heads on the large leaved species such as R. macabeanum R. grande and R. sinogrande
Petite plants such as 'September Snow' have all but finished their flowering but the wonderful mounds of R. yakushimanum and its many hybrids, as well as other prostrate and low-growing hybrids, such as 'Creamy Chiffon' , hug the ground in mounds and rivers of colour. These smaller plants are ideal for smaller gardens or the front of the border.
Do go to one of the Rhododendron festivals and learn more about these fascinating plants, head out onto the garden trials and explore the myriad ways in which gardeners incorporate and celebrate this very diverse plant.
