The industrial revolution in Europe had created a need for new markets and raw materials. This precipitated a later rush for Africa from traders seeking concessions for their governments. Moreover, the gun - a new method for hunting - had been introduced to Batswana, who realised the value and power of firearms after a handful of Boers had been able to rout the Ndebele tribe in the 1830s. Even the best hunters struggled to make a living in South Africa, the game having been depleted. They turned their attention to the unexplored north. The game soon dwindled, unable to

HISTORY OF ZIMBABWE RUGBY The Pioneer Column arrived in Rhodesia in 1890 and brought with it the first batch of rugby players from the Cape. Enthusiasm was such that the earliest matches to be played in Rhodesia were during stops on the long trek towards Salisbury.
Although the Pioneers had played in Fort Victoria in 1890, the earliest recorded game by sides resident in the Midlands province was played in 1899 when Gwelo paid a visit to Selukwe.
Political developments saw Rhodesia become Zimbabwe in 1980 and while it ended the ties with South Africa and Currie Cup it presented exciting opportunities in the International Arena.
Zimbabwe has participated in two World Cups, 1987 and 1991 and history was made in 1986 with the debut of the first African player, Richard Tsimba in the Zimbabwe National Team.

    Early Rhodesian Military Units
by E.H.J. SHAW To the best of the author's knowledge the following is the most comprehensive list of Rhodesian units of the pioneer period ever prepared. It covers a period during which few badges were worn and is mainly of historical interest and as such, well worth recording. Details of the homemade flashes and rosettes worn by volunteer units do not exist at the archives or museums in Rhodesia, except for the circular cloth embroidered badges of the original "British South Africa Police" and the "Rhodesia Horse". In both cases the badge is of red lettering on a navy background with a red lion and tusk in the centre. 1. BRITISH SOUTH AFRICA COMPANY POLICE (with Pioneer Column) 1890. 2. MASHONALAND HORSE (Volunteers). The unit included an Artillery Troop and was widely dispersed - 1891-1893. 3. SALISBURY HORSE. Localised - 1893 and disbanded mid-December. 4. VICTORIA RANGERS. Localised - 1893 and disbanded mid-December.

    Early Rhodesia's Weapons
The information given in this article is on the basic armament of the Pioneer Column which occupied Mashonaland in 1890. It was supplied by the National Archives of Rhodesia and is reproduced here, by kind permission, from the journal of the Historical Firearms Society of South Africa. ARTILLERY: Two 7-pounder muzzle loading 200 lb. pieces, with trail and limber. These were purchased from the Cape Mounted Riflemen by the B.S.A. Company in 1890 and had previously been used by Sir Charles Warren's force in Bechuanaland. The guns were also used in the Matabele War of 1893 and in the Rebellion of 1896. One is believed to have formed part of the defence of Bulawayo in 1896 and the other was used in operations against the Portuguese in the Manica area in 1891. During the South African War 7-pounders were mounted on armoured trains to partol the railway lines. The Column which entered Matabeleland in 1893 had a 7-pounder and a longer barrelled version of the same weapon known as the "screw gun." The 10th Mountain Battery, Royal Artillery, took part in the Matabeleland Campaign and had a number of 7-pounder "screw guns" of which at least two were left behind when the unit left the country. These continued in use throughout the South African War. MACHINE GUNS: The Pioneer Column was armed with four, of which two were Maxims, one a Nordenfelt, and one a Gatling. The columns which entered Bulawayo each had a machine gun and the Gardner machine gun of the Salisbury Column was decisive in the first battle of Bembesi in 1893. The use of these weapons was restricted to defensive emplacements in the 1896 campaigns. Pitched battles were no longer the order of the day and once the fighting had moved into the hills the machine gun's effectiveness was curbed.

Company history. Philatelic Friends is a South Africanbased stamp auction companyoperating out of the picturesque coastal village of Hout Bay, near Cape Town.
    http://www.philatelicfriends.com/history.html
Company History Founded in 1988 after Ken and the late Terry Barnes moved from Johannesburg to Hout Bay, the company continued to grow and now have clients living all over the world. In an effort to continually improve their service, Philatelic Friends have been involved in the ongoing development of its computer systems and in 1998 this culminated in the auction catalogues becoming accessible to the international market via the Internet. Approximately 70% of material sold is exported to customers living abroad. After more than a decade in rented offices, the need for bigger premises became essential and in May 1999 the company bought a historical house, known as "Oakburn", close to the heart of Hout Bay's village centre, to use as offices. A typical Cape-Dutch style house, built in 1847, it has ornate gables, wooden beamed ceilings and shuttered windows and is set in an attractive garden setting. Situated on the first farming land in Hout Bay, granted by the VOC to Freeburgers, the property was part of the original "Kronendal Estate". The farm manager was housed in this homestead which later adopted the name "Oakburn", after the British ship "Oakburn" which was wrecked in 1906 off nearby Sandy Bay. The surviving sailors were billeted here and some of the wooden beams salvaged from the wreck were later used in further construction and renovations to the building.

I recently finished reading "A Chronicle of Modern Sunlight" and found it to be extremely informative. As a student of Rhodesian history and of Southern African history as a whole, I found the book to be a wonderful guide to what happened to the people of Rhodesia. I highly recommend this book. Anyone who cares about the story of Rhodesia both pre and post 1980 will absolutely love the book.

I went to hear Matthew McAllester speak a couple of months ago in Chicago and I was impressed with his articulateness and was really interested in reading about his personal story. That personal story was barely present in this book and what was there was a jumbled mess. A weird stream of consciousness that will confuse you even if you're well-versed on recent Iraqi history. Did McAllester write this book, or did he just give his assembled notes to some editorial assistant who tried to write ...
