Airline HISTORY from June 1946 Extracts from article published in Air Zimbabwe in flight magazine "Skyhost" 1996
Air Zimbabwe can trace its long history back directly to the formation, on 1 June 1946, of Central African Airways (CAA), which came into being as the joint airline of Southern Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe), Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia) and Nyasaland (now Malawi), with 50 percent, 35 per- cent and 15 percent respectively of its share capital being held by the governments of those three countries. CAA At its formation, CAA acquired some of the assets and personnel of Southern Rhodesia Air Services (SRAS), a combined airline and communications squadron that had been formed at the beginning of World War II from the dissolution of Rhodesia and Nyasaland Airways (RANA).
RANA had itself been formed in October 1933 by the merger of two small privately owned companies which, in the late 1920s, had provided Central Africa with its first "regular" air services. (Those inverted commas are necessary: given the undeveloped state of the territory, its airfields, its navigational aids and the aircraft themselves, that marvellously elastic term 'technical delay' could, in those pioneering days, be read as meaning almost anything from a puncture to a lion having eaten the pilot!) NAVIGATION RHODESIA ZIMBABWE ICELAND Rhodesian Wine Industry It appears to be a matter of some dispute, as to exactly when and where the commercial wine industry in Rhodesia had its beginnings. There are many opinions on this question, but a place to begin this piece has to be found, and at the risk of causing much disagreement amongst Rhodesians, that place shall be Essexvale, situated in Matabeleland between the city of Bulawayo and Balla Balla. This first commercial production began in the early 1950's under the labels of Worringham and Lorraine, these were semi-sweet and quite good. Rhodesians had been told by outside experts that wine production in the country was not a viable proposition, or even possible. However, this kind of thinking has no meaning to a Rhodesian and showing typical grit and determination, Rhodesians soon proved the experts wrong. In the beginning, much of the wine produced in Rhodesia was to say the least, not of the best quality, but was extremely useful for putting the shine back on old pennies or stripping that awkward enamel paint from a truck chassis! Mind you, this was also true of the first English wines to appear since the time of the Roman occupation, but they have also grown in stature and respect, much to the chagrin of the French and assorted pretentious wine snobs. Other areas in Rhodesia soon came on tap to produce wine, some of these being in the Eastern Highlands, Marandera and rumour has it, Umtali on the Mozambique border. Both red and white wines were produced, with the red wines seeming to be the most successful and the quickest to improve in quality.

By the late 18th cent. traders (including Arabs, Swahili, and other Africans) had penetrated the region from both the Atlantic and Indian Ocean coasts; they exported copper, wax, and slaves. In 1835 the Ngoni, a warlike group from S Africa, entered E Zambia. In 1859, David Livingstone , the Scots explorer, visited Lake Nyasa and drew European attention to the effects of the slave trade there; in 1873 two Presbyterian missionary societies established bases in the region. Missionary activity, the threat of Portuguese annexation, and the influence of Cecil Rhodes led Great Britain to send a consul to the area in 1883 and to proclaim the Shire Highlands Protectorate in 1889. In 1891 the British Central African Protectorate (known from 1907 until 1964 as Nyasaland), which included most of present-day Malawi, was established. During the 1890s, British forces ended the slave trade in the protectorate. At the same time, Europeans established coffee-growing estates in the Shire region, worked by Africans. In 1915 a small-scale revolt against British rule was easily suppressed, but it was an inspiration to other Africans intent on ending foreign domination. In 1944 the protectorate's first political movement, the moderate Nyasaland African Congress, was formed, and in 1949 the government admitted the first Africans to the legislative council. In 1953 the Federation of

Rhodesian Ridgebacks
A History - In Brief
*Many parts of this history are freely plagiarized from Linda Costa's (Zimbabwe) article "Footprints through Time.:-) Although a relatively new breed, the history of the Rhodesian Ridgeback is as complex as it is interesting and varied. The beginnings of a new breed of dog, interwoven with the taming of a wild land, making a new tapestry on the continent of Africa. In 1652, when the South African cape was first settled by white newcomers, they found the local Hottentot tribes had their own semi-domesticated camp dog - small, prick-eared, curled tail and a ridge of opposite-growing hair on its back. Although for the next several hundred years this breed interbred with the settler's dogs, the ridge managed to persist through the generations.
From the National Archives
Today, we credit three men as being mainly responsible for bringing the Rhodesian Ridgeback to where it is today. They were Charles Helm, Cornelius van Rooyen and Francis Barnes. The Reverend Charles Helm, along with his wife and daughter, made the "trek" from Swellendam, in the Cape, to Hope Fountain in 1875 and took over the mission there. Along with his family, he brought two ridged bitches, Powder and Lorna. All travelers to the area stopped to rest at the mission, as there was no other place, and it was here that Reverend Helm became friends with van Rooyen, the famous lion hunter and game procurer.

History of Zambia
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The indigenous hunter-gatherer occupants of Zambia began to be displaced or absorbed by more advanced migrating tribes about 2,000 years ago. The major waves of Bantu -speaking immigrants began in the 15th century, with the greatest influx between the late 17th and early 19th centuries. They came primarily from the Luba and Lunda tribes of southern Zaire and northern Angola but were joined in the 19th century by Nguni peoples from the south. By the latter part of that century, the various peoples of Zambia were largely established in the areas they currently occupy. Except for an occasional Portuguese explorer, the area lay untouched by Europeans for centuries. After the mid-19th century, it was penetrated by Western explorers, missionaries, and traders. David Livingstone , in , was the first European to see the magnificent waterfalls on the Zambezi River . He named the falls after Queen Victoria , and the Zambian town near the falls is named after him. In Cecil Rhodes , spearheading British commercial and political interests in Central Africa, obtained a mineral rights concession from local chiefs. In the same year, Northern and Southern

In late 1922, settlers voted in a referendum to reject proposals for incorporation into the Union of South Africa, electing instead to make Rhodesia a self-governing colony under the British Crown : a status that became effective on Sept. 12, 1923. In 1953, Southern Rhodesia became a member of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (see Rhodesia and Nyasaland, Federation of ), despite African objections to a European-dominated federal structure. In the early 1960s, a new constitution was adopted that provided for limited African political participation; however, the Africans remained unappeased. In 1963 the federation broke up as African majority governments assumed control in Northern Rhodesia and in Nyasaland (renamed Zambia and Malawi respectively). After the federation's demise, conservative trends hardened in Southern Rhodesia (which now became known simply as Rhodesia).

Rhodesia (after Cecil Rhodes ) is the former name of the African country of Zimbabwe . At an earlier period, the name "Rhodesia" was used to refer to a larger region that corresponds to both Zimbabwe ( Southern Rhodesia ) and Zambia Northern Rhodesia In , faced with the independence of African states, the United Kingdom attempted to create the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland , which consisted of the current nations of Zimbabwe Zambia , and Malawi which at the time were called Southern Rhodesia Northern Rhodesia and Nyasaland respectively. The Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland was dissolved on January 1 upon the independence of Malawi and Zambia . When Northern Rhodesia was granted independence by Britain in , it changed its name to Zambia. Southern Rhodesia remained a British colony and came to be known simply as Rhodesia. The British government adopted a policy known as NIBMAR (No Independence Before Majority African Rule), to the consternation of the white minority Rhodesian Front (RF) government, led by

    Zimbabwe-Rhodesia
Zimbabwe-Rhodesia was the (largely unrecognised) name of Zimbabwe between and , adopted by Rhodesia soon after an Internal Settlement between the white minority Rhodesian Government led by Ian Smith and small, moderate African nationalist parties not involved in the war that had been raging in the country since .In Britain the new name was ridiculed, with the state being dismissed as 'Rhobabwe'. Josiah Zion Gumede was the first President, with Abel Muzorewa of the United African National Council (UANC) as Prime Minister. The country's bicameral parliament now had a black majority. However, 10 seats in the 40-member Senate and 28 in the 100-member House of Assembly were reserved for whites, who also retained control of the country's civil service, judiciary, police and armed forces. It is not clear why Zimbabwe was given such a long hyphenated name after the internal settlement. As early as 1960, the African nationalist movement had already decided that the country's name was "Zimbabwe" and had started using Zimbabwe as part of the names of their political parties. It would seem that the hyphenated name was a compromise between the white-dominated Rhodesian government, which did not want to let go, and the small African nationalist parties that were represented at the Internal Settlement talks, who wanted to save face with the inclusion of the popular name, Zimbabwe.
