archive site of the week Week of November 6: Rhode Island School Of Design The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) has relaunched its Web site with a design, executed by R/GA Interactive, that accurately communicates their reputation as an eminent art and design school.
The information site has the dual purpose of satisfying student recruiting objectives while maintaining an elegance suitable for patrons of the RISD museum, the campus community and the general public. The resulting design is completely appropriate for the school, known for its standards of creative excellence, where admission is competitive and studio and classroom standards are rigorous.
An inventive use of color, motion and high-resolution imagery offer a compelling invitation to potential students. Images throughout the site function as subplots by providing a story-like background for predominantly text-based content. The gallery-like display is a nice juxtaposition to the main informational theme; this is most notable on the home page where a Flash animation encourages visitors to start navigating.
In addition to incorporating appropriate design elements, the designers created a site that is pleasantly easy to use. The navigation is intuitive and enables exploration to be driven by visitor needs (hierarchical templates were used to maintain a visual sense of place). And despite large amounts of content, the postcard-like presentation offers auxiliary pages that are clean and uncluttered with the illusion of layers created by placing white space on top of a changing background. It gives the site depth while also making text very easy to read.

Lawmakers mull bill that ties driver's license with school
April 26, 2004 PROVIDENCE, R.I. State lawmakers are considering a bill to cut down on school truancy. ADVERTISEMENT The bill would give Family Court the authority to suspend a student's driving privileges if the juvenile has skipped school. Authorities also could act on a driver's license for certain behavior, such as possession of cigarettes or alcohol, according to The Providence Journal. The bill doesn't define chronic truancy, nor spell out how a student can appeal, however. As many as 19 states tie a driver's license with school attendance, according to the state attorney general's office. Attorney General Patrick Lynch supports the legislation, but school administrators appear split on the issue. "Tackling truancy head-on will undoubtedly cut the juvenile delinquency rate and pay major dividends for our state's economy," Lynch wrote the House Committee on Health, Education and Welfare. "It is my belief that this bill will reduce truancy and keep children in school and out of trouble." One critic is the state chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. It contends the bill is flawed procedurally and because it sets no criteria as to when a student would lose driving privileges.

    Shameful history of child labor
It was the nasty secret behind Rhode Island's flourishing economy: Small hands and little fingers helped create lives of luxury for the rich and helped make the state one of the wealthiest in the country. At the beginning of the century, area industries relied on child labor. The children often quit school and risked life and limb to work in the mills.
    Journal file photo
At the beginning of the 20th century, Rhode Island industries, particularly the textile factories, relied on child labor to a greater degree than other states of the industrial northern United States.
Children quit school to work in the mills, jeopardizing their health and their futures.
They lost limbs, and, in a few cases, their lives. Accident reports from the era are stark reminders:
Feb. 3, 1906: Philida Dagis, age 15, working at U.S. Cotton in Central Falls, had ``little finger of left hand cut off by a loom.''
Jan. 11, 1904: John Cleason, age 14, employed as a carder in Elizabeth Mill No. 1, in Warwick, had ``the ends of his third and fourth fingers caught in the `licker' and had his flesh torn off.''

    Admission Requirements
The Community College of Rhode Island has a policy of open admissions which gives all Rhode Island residents an opportunity for education beyond the high school level. Students who plan to attend CCRI with the intention of transferring to a four-year college or university can best prepare themselves in high school by taking college preparatory courses and obtaining a solid foundation in the humanities, language, arts, mathematics and sciences. If a prospective applicant has reached the age of sixteen years, the compulsory school attendance age in Rhode Island, and has earned a high school diploma or its equivalent, the applicant may be admitted to a certificate or degree program at the Community College of Rhode Island. The equivalent of a high school diploma is defined as follows: demonstrated ability in passing all tests required to earn a certificate of high school equivalency (GED) by the Rhode Island Department of Education. Although a high school diploma or its equivalent is not a general admission requirement of the College provided the student is 18 years of age, it should be noted that intercollegiate athletic participants, applicants for financial aid or veterans' benefits and in some cases students applying for transfer to some senior colleges must show evidence of a high school diploma or its equivalent.

Dear Mom-I-am, dear Mom-I-am, we have a problem, Mom-I-am. Your son won't do what he must do. He drives me crazy, yes it's true! He will stall and squirm and hum, and leave all of his work undone. He dreams and will not pay attention, have you considered medication? With other kids he does not play, he is alone much of the day. Something does not seem quite right, because I know he must be bright. He seems to learn, despite the rest, but the work is not his best. He is disruptive, yes it's true. He just won't do what he must do! Yes, teacher, I can really see, how frustrating all this must be, A child who does not meet the norm, a child whose mold won't fit the form. I've had him tested on WISC-III, by your approved test agency. He scores far higher than the mean, there's more to this that can be seen. So help us, help us find the way, to teach this child best if we may. He is not like the rest you see, he acts and thinks far differently.

    93. THE NAVY & RHODE ISLAND: A HISTORY
current situation and conclude that rhode island has managed all located on Aquidneck island the Naval with its Officer Indoctrination School, the Chaplain
    http://www.nuwc.navy.mil/hq/history/0002.html
Last Updated: Friday, May 18, 2001
There has long been a mutually beneficial, and often colorful, association between the United States Navy and Rhode Island. This association goes back several hundred years, most notably on Aquidneck Island and with the city of Newport. Rhode Islanders in general, and Newporters in particular, have always been famous for wanting to go their own way. This was true in both matters of commerce as well as nation-building, as the early history of this free and autonomous colony would attest. It's what drove Roger Williams to come to Rhode Island in 1636, to get away from the repression of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Shortly thereafter William Coddington , along with Anne and William Hutchinson, sailed down the bay and landed on the north end of Acquidneck Island. This area was called Pocasett by the Indians, but the settlers decided to call it Portsmouth. There was a price for Aquidneck Island. It was purchased from the Narragansett Indians for 23 broadcloth coats and thirteen hoes. Within a year, however, Coddington had had enough of the Hutchinsons, and moved to the southern tip of Aquidneck Island to get away from them.

In Memoriam: President Ronald Wilson Reagan (1911 - 2004) Senator Chafee's Tribute to President Reagan on the Floor of the United States Senate: "Mr. President, I want to pay tribute to President Ronald Reagan, a man for whom I had the utmost respect. A strong, principled leader, President Reagan used his optimism and humor to help the nation feel better in a post-Vietnam, post-Watergate country coping with an energy crisis and high inflation. He brought strong leadership and could relate to people from all walks of life very, very easily. Democrats controlled the House during both of his terms, and the Senate during his last two years in office. In order to advance his priorities, he had to bridge the partisan divide and work with members of the other party. He was also very proud of his good personal relations with Tip O'Neill and other Democratic leaders. The proof of his appeal was his ability to carry a Democrat stronghold like my state of Rhode Island in the 1984 election. He was the last Republican Presidential candidate to do so."
