Historical Highlights of Rhode Island’s Black Community By the late 17th century, Rhode Island had become the only colony in New England to use slaves for both labor and trade . Newport and Bristol were the major slave markets in the American colonies. Although slave trade and plantations were considered to be a southern way of life, they also existed outside the south . In Rhode Island, they took the form of the Narragansett plantation family, the Middletown crop workers, and the indentured and slave craftsmen of Newport. Moses Brown freed his slaves after becoming a Quaker and let a strong abolitionist force that made Rhode Island among the first or the colonies to pass legislation to end slave-trading. John Bower, however, did not share his brother Moses’ philosophy. A merchant, state representative, and powerful slave holder. John was tried for slave -trading in 1796 and was found "not guilty". This acquittal convinced many that the new legislation was useless, especially against the wealthy and powerful who engaged in this practice. Rhode Island
The State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations, one of the thirteen original colonies, is in extent of territory (land area, 1054 square miles), the smallest state in the American union . It includes the Island of Rhode Island, Block Island, and the lands adjacent to Narragansett Bay, bounded on the north and east by Massachusetts, on the south by the Atlantic Ocean, and on the west by Connecticut. The population, according to the United States Census of 1910, numbers 542,674. Providence, the capital, situated at head of Narragansett Bay, and having a population of 224,326, is the industrial centre of an extremely wealthy and densely populated district. During the latter period and for several years afterward came a heavy immigration from Ireland, followed by a large influx from Canada. For the last twenty-five years, the increase from European countries, especially Italy, has been great. According to the State census of 1095, the number of foreign-born in Rhode Island is as follows; born in Canada, 38,500; in Ireland, 32,629; In England, 24,431; In Italy, 18,014; In Sweden, 7201; In Scotland, 5649; in Portugal, 5293; In Russia, 4505; in Germany, 4463; in Poland, 4104. This classification does not distinguish the Jews, who are rapidly increasing, and who in 1905 numbered 14,570. HISTORY A. Political

Director of Student Life: Blair De St. Croix Community Service at Rhode Island School of Design developed from the charter of the community founders and their original mission statement over 100 years ago. Service at RISD continues to change and develop in response to community opportunities and needs. The two strongest links flow from the departments that provide service connected to specific disciplines, and from the unique resource of the Museum. RISD's Art Education department builds natural bridges to the community through "artist in residence" programs in local schools. About 20 students participated in this experience this year. Furthermore, service-learning takes place at public housing sites and city elementary schools during and after school through the Community Art Program (CAP). CAP evolved from a request, made by the RI Attorney General's Office in 1989, to provide art instruction to at-risk children living in an environment rife with violence and substance abuse. Volunteers examine some of the social, economic and cognitive issues for children of poverty, probing how these issues may impact upon a child's classroom performance. Dozens of undergraduates, including Brown students, have participated in this Art Education program; some of these volunteers continue to work on behalf of children through foundations and other community service and philanthropic endeavors.

We need to advise you that there are some cases when our policies conflict with the policies of these higher education institutions, which have been administering their programs for many years. While we have advocated for policy changes that would be most beneficial to Crusaders, at times we needed to adapt to a school’s policies.
Some schools’ policy is to pay your Crusade Scholarship by adding on additional “grant” or “free money” to what they would already give you. In this case, you actually get more free money than you would have had without the Crusade Scholarship.
Other schools will take away some of the free money they would otherwise give you and give it back again, renaming it ‘Crusade Scholarship’. In this case, you won’t actually get more free money than you would have had without the Crusade Scholarship

Japan and Rhode Island
Rhode Island's relationship with Japan dates back further than that of most other states; it began during the Tokugawa Era (1600-1868) and was strengthened during the early years of the Meiji Period (1868-1912). Specifically, the association began on July 14, 1853, when Commodore Matthew Perry, a native of Newport, sailed his Black Ships into the harbor at Shimoda. The relationship was further solidified when Yukichi Fukuzawa, the founder of Keio University, discovered the writings of Dr. Francis Wayland, the third president of Brown University. Despite these auspicious beginnings, however, Rhode Island-Japan ties today are comparatively meager. At present, Brown University and Providence College are the only institutions in the state with formal programs of Japanese studies. Several other universities, including the University of Rhode Island and Rhode Island College, and about a quarter of the state's secondary schools offer Japanese language classes and occasional instruction in aspects of Japanese culture. koto and shakuhachi.
