The Governor proposes to create a new health care tax deduction to help Rhode Island consumers pay out-of-pocket health care expenses. These proposals were made possible by an unexpected, $46 million increase in state revenue projections.

Verbal Harassment in the Schools and a Lack of Adequate Policies to Address It ... Notes History and Mission On December 6, 1995, Rhode Island youth made history in this state by courageously speaking out about discrimination directed against gay, lesbian, bisexaul, and transgendered students in their schools. At a statewide forum sponsored by the Rhode Island Task Force on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgendered Youth, students, teachers and parents had the opportunity to share their experiences and those of their peers who suffer from isolation, harassment, threats and violence. The purpose of the forum was to gather information on the realities of school life for gay and lesbian students and to develop recommendations to allow all youth to obtain an education free from discrimination and harassment. Modeled after the Massachusetts Governor's Commission On Gay and Lesbian Youth, which was the first of its kind in the nation, the Rhode Island Task Force has been organized to ensure the safety of all students regardless of sexual orientation. The Task Force is made up of government officials, service providers, youth, parents, educators, and administrators from the Rhode Island Departments of Health and Education.

RI Teachers Strive for Excellence
By Rep. Stephen J. Anderson
Just this past month, 46 more Rhode Island teachers received their certification from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, an organization that is leading the way to making teaching a profession dedicated to student learning and to upholding high standards for professional performance.
Representing school districts in Westerly, Warwick, Pawtucket, Lincoln, Coventry, Johnston and other Rhode Island communities, the 46 teachers completed a rigorous year-long process that involves videotaping themselves before a class of students, written tests in their content area and judgment of their teaching performance by a panel of 42 professionals from around the nation. This is a professional development incentive that judges a teacher's skills and knowledge where they count the most in the classroom, in front of the students.
The 46 teachers who received their NBPTS credentials last month bring to 106 the number of teachers in Rhode Island who have received the national certification. While that total number is small in comparison to the number of teachers in other states around the nation who have received their certification, Rhode Island still ranks No. 1 among New England states in NBPTS certification. Moreover, the percentage of certified Rhode Island teachers compared to all teachers in the state puts Rhode Island near the top nationally.

System change will result from the activities through which these goals will be implemented. Specifically, systems change will be evidenced in: a) the existence of alternative approaches for recruiting and preparing personnel; b) the existence of an increased number of personnel who can effectively educate children with disabilities in the general curriculum; c) increased capacity of the 52 lowest achieving schools in the state (and other schools) to educate children with disabilities in the general curriculum;

- The schools in Providence, Rhode Island, like those in most large and midsize cities, suffer alarming drop-out rates. In 1989, Urban Collaborative, an independent, public middle school for teenagers at risk of dropping out, was founded. The results have been phenomenal. More than 80 percent of the students go on to graduate from high school. Michael Brosnan uses the stories of the director, students, and teachers to explain how and why this school succeeds where so many have failed. http://www.amazon.com [139] Hits Comments about this link?
