The Next Step for School Choice:
Removing State Constitutional Obstacles
Institute for Justice Challenges The Institute for Justice, the public interest law firm that helped successfully defend Cleveland school choice parents, is launching a series of test cases seeking to remove state constitutional barriers to school choice, with the goal of securing a national precedent in the U.S. Supreme Court. IJ will fight to clear the path for school choice programs by removing obstacles that block the implementation of educational reform in the states. The policy requires state programs to discriminate against religious schools and students. The suit marks the first challenge to a state constitutional provision that limits school choice since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the Cleveland voucher program. On June 27, 2002, the U.S. Supreme Court definitively held that school choice programs that are neutral toward religion, giving parents the power to independently choose where to send their children, are constitutional. The Supreme Court has spoken.

Help Schools Become Food Safe April 14, 2004 - What is a food safe school ? The most obvious environment to consider food safety in the school is in the cafeteria. However, foodborne illness can occur anywhere foods are prepared and served in a school. Therefore, a food safe school has administrators, staff, teachers, students, and parents who know and practice key principles of food safety when purchasing, preparing, storing, and eating food. Whether foods are prepared and served in the cafeteria, brought from home in a brown bag or a lunch box, purchased from vending machines, or served at any school event, they must be handled correctly. Food safety is everyone’s business! The Rhode Island Experience
Rhode Island has successfully implemented food safe schools throughout the state based on a team approach. Rhode Island is a "Coordinated School Health State," funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). State objectives include the promotion of healthy habits related to physical activity, nutrition and food safety. The RI Departments of Education and Health coordinate the RI Healthy Schools! Healthy Kids!

Fall 2000 Headlines Getting High Tech workers to Rhode Island
By Ron Orol
Like the rest of the nation, Rhode Island has a shortage of high tech workers. But the state has the added challenge of keeping workers from moving to the high tech corridor in Massachusetts. Another issue is the state's growing dependence on high-tech foreign workers. To solve these problems, Rhode Island government officials are joining forces with education leaders and high tech business owners to try to keep and increase the number of technology workers instate. For many, the first step is educating young Rhode Islanders. "Kids tend to think that Information Technology is cartoon Dilbert with a plastic pocket protector looking at a computer screen all day and you need to be a mathematical genius to get into this field," said Rick Kovar, director of the Rhode Island Technology Council.

In March 2003 a RISD/Brown Joint Faculty Committee established the previous fall by RISD Provost Joe Deal and his Brown University counterpart Robert Zimmer released its recommendations for increased
a Center for Emergent Arts, Design, and Science (CEADS) that would build on current efforts by uniting faculty in the sciences, arts, design and media; a multidisciplinary program of Arts in the Public Sphere to examine the aesthetic, philosophical, social, political and economic factors shaping public art and to explore interpretive strategies to draw the public into meaningful encounters with art; and a Providence Center for Urban Design and Innovation, which would use the physical, social and economic conditions of the Providence region as the basis for research and study designed to provide the city with new information, innovative ideas and alternative perspectives. Given the energy and enthusiasm generated during committee discussions, the group has also recommended to the Brown and RISD administrations and faculties that a standing Committee for Inter-Institutional Collaboration (CIC) be established to explore and develop new proposals. In the meantime, separate joint committees are being created to develop implementation plans for each of the three centers recommended in the initial report. full report

Rhode Island Tobacco Control Program
About the Rhode Island Tobacco Control Program
Tobacco takes a terrible toll in Rhode Island .  The Rhode Island Tobacco Control Program (TCP) in the Division of Disease Prevention and Control, Rhode Island Department of Health (HEALTH) is the governmental organization responsible for addressing smoking as a major public health problem. The TCP has four major goals, which were developed by a statewide Coalition:
  • Preventing the initiation of tobacco use among young people Promoting quitting among young people and adults Eliminating nonsmokers’ exposure to secondhand smoke Identifying and eliminating the disparities related to tobacco use and its effects among different population groups
  • All the tobacco control activities contribute to reaching the goals of Healthy People 2010.  The Rhode Island Tobacco Control Program is based on the strategic plan developed on recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.  These recommendations are compiled on the experiences and results of previous tobacco control activities in states like Massachusetts, California, Oregon and Florida.  There is no single magic bullet that is successful in tobacco prevention, given the fact that tobacco is very pervasive.  Center for Disease Control has found the nine elements included in these recommendations, when used together, have produced decreases in smoking and exposure to secondhand smoke.  The Centers for Disease Prevention and Control have recommended funding levels between $10 and $22 million to conduct an effective program.
