(First posted on 04/27/04) Clue #1 It's the centerpiece of an impressive natural wonder, one that literally dominates the landscape for miles and miles. (The bay, in essence, is a 65-mile-long fjord in the center of Glacier National Park) Clue #2 Most visitors ( by choice ) remain on the fringes, avoiding the backcountry. For those that do venture into the interior, a small boat or kayak is their transportation of choice. Clue #3 Cruise ships are a fairly common sight here, and passengers line the decks to view the impressive skyline. For those that journey on ( to the answer we need ), a change of clothes is certainly required. On May 4, 1776, Rhode Island became the first of the 13 original colonies to declare its independence from Great Britain. However, it was the last of the 13 colonies to ratify the Constitution of the United States, doing so on May 29, 1790. For many students, geography is a class in memorization: all the state capitols, the major rivers of the world, the main export of each of the countries of Africa. Although such facts are important for students to know, activity-based learning such as those in Operation RubyThroat may be more effective in teaching, learning, and retention than mere memorization. The Ruby-throated Hummingbird (Archilochus colubris) is an ideal topic for discussion in geography because it breeds, migrates through, or spends the winter in all the countries of North and Central America. While learning about the natural history of this diminutive bird, students can also learn a great deal about geography. We hope you'll want to share your original hummingbird geography work through publication on Operation RubyThroat . If so, contact
