    Rhode Island, state, United States
    Geography
Rhode Island is the smallest of the 50 states and except for New Jersey the most densely populated. The dominant physiographic feature of the state is the Narragansett basin, a shallow lowland area of Carboniferous sediments, extending into SE Massachusetts and, in Rhode Island, partly submerged as Narragansett Bay . The bay cuts inland c.30 mi (50 km) to Providence, where it receives the Blackstone River; it contains several islands, including Rhode Island (or Aquidneck), the largest (and the site of historic Newport); Conanicut Island, with the resort of Jamestown ; and Prudence Island. The coastline between Point Judith and Watch Hill is marked by sand spits and barrier beaches, sheltering lagoons and salt marshes. Glaciation left many small lakes, and the rolling hilly surface of the state is cut by short, swift streams with numerous falls. Although more than half of Rhode Island is covered with forests, it is highly urbanized. Providence is the capital and the largest city; other important cities are

Abbreviation:
RI The exact origin of the state name is unknown. Roger Williams and a group of religious followers founded the town of Providence in what is today known as Rhode Island after their banishment from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Williams believed in the importance of liberty of conscience, which became an important principle in the founding of Rhode Island and ultimately in the founding of the United States. Rhode Island is the 13th of the original states of the Union (1790). Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States. In spite of its size (3,140 sq. km), it is nevertheless an important industrial state. Rhode Island lies on beautiful Narragansett Bay, an arm of the Atlantic Ocean. Tourists come to Rhode Island coastal resorts each summer to enjoy boating, fishing and other water sports. The annual Newport Music Festival is held in late July and early August. Morris County (N.J.) Library (The following appears on the Whipple Website with Linda's permission and corrections. It originally appeared on the rigenweb-L@rootsweb.com on December 10, 1997.) Seeing the discussion about Pawcatuck and Pawtucket inspired me to complicate things further by adding Pawtuxet. As someone has already said, Pawcatuck is in Connecticut, just over the line from Westerly, R.I. There was a long-standing boundary dispute between Rhode Island and Connecticut concerning all of the land in southern R.I.just about all of what is now Washington County. There are lots of records of Rhode Islanders being thrown in jail in Connecticut for encroaching on what Conn. considered theirs, as Conn. at one time claimed all the land up to Narragansett Bay. Eventually, the line was established as the Pawcatuck River, separating Westerly and Pawcatuck. There was a lot of moving back and forth across the R.I./Conn. boundary, so the same family is often found in both states. Pawtucket is in the extreme northeast. The part of the modern Pawtucket that is east of the Seekonk River was originally part of Rehoboth, in Plymouth Colony. Rehoboth was constantly being split up and recombined, and is a real mess. In 1862 that part of Pawtucket was ceded to R.I. In 1874, the part of Pawtucket to the west of the river was taken from North Providence, which had been set off from Providence in 1765.
