Normal Education in Rhode Island 1857-1871:
    Decline and Resurrection
By Michael Smith The academies of that era were more akin to modern-day boarding schools and provided an education roughly analogous to the middle and high schools of today. While instruction at private academies was no substitute for post-secondary instruction, in an era when census data show that just two percent of high school age students actually earned a diploma, graduates of such institutions were considered highly educated indeed.
Both of the 19th century academies are well worth visiting, as the respective campuses retain much of their former charm and it is not difficult to imagine them as they were in their heyday as the centers for teacher education in Rhode Island. The author gratefully acknowledges Marlene Lopes, Special Collections Librarian, for her assistance with research for the Sesquicentennial Memories series. Much of the information for this article is available from the College Archives, including History of Higher Education in Rhode Island, published in 1894 by William Howe Tolman; The Story of the Rhode Island Normal School, published in 1911 by Thomas Bicknell; Public Education in Rhode Island, published in 1918 by Charles Carroll; and History of the Rhode Island Institute of Instruction, published in 1971 by Hector Richard Carbone.

    College Opens First Residence Hall
By Michael Smith As Rhode Island College awaits the recommendations of a feasibility study to construct a sixth residence hall, it is interesting to review the events surrounding the opening of its first residence hall 42 years ago, on September 10, 1961. Ground was broken on June 21, 1960 and the building was ready to welcome new students for the Fall 1961 semester. The room and board rate for the 1961-62 academic year was set at $775. Enthusiasm and pride were high that fall even though the building was not filled to capacity during its first year of operation. At its opening, 73 women from the College were joined by 50 women from the University of Rhode Island, who boarded at the College until a new residence hall could be completed in Kingston. The building was dedicated on Sunday, November 12, 1961 and named for Mary Tucker Thorp, an individual described at the ceremony by President Gaige as one of the two most important figures in the history of the institution (the other being Clara Craig).

The paper reviewed documents and conducted interviews to piece together the final hours of Cindy Gilbert Sohappy, 16, a member of the Warm Springs Tribes. Documents show she was placed in the cell at 8:20 p.m. on December 6 for being intoxicated. Less than an hour later, the paper said, Sohappy began to flail around on the floor. But no one apparently checked to see how she was doing even though school procedures require checkups every 15 minutes. According to the paper, the entries for Sohappy read "sleeping." Three hours later, at 11:20 p.m., a school worker noticed she wasn't breathing. But she couldn't be revived. She died of alcohol poisoning, an autopsy concluded. The FBI has seized the videotape as part of its investigation. Three staff members are on paid leave pending the results. Get the Story:

(2) Will there be compliance deadline extensions given? This depends upon several factors including the availability of licensed contractors. The deadlines may be extended by the General Assembly. The deadlines could also be extended by the Fire Board as part a comprehensive plan of action addressing several facilities operated by the same applicant. Prudence Crandall, director of the first private boarding school for black girls in New England, was born into a Quaker family in Hope Valley, Rhode Island, and spent most of her childhood in the prosperous village of Canterbury, Connecticut. The second of four children, Prudence received a superior education at the New England Yearly Meeting School in Providence, Rhode Island. She taught school for a brief time in Lisbon and Plainfield, Connecticut, before returning to Canterbury. In 1831, with the assistance of the town fathers, Crandall opened the Canterbury Female Seminary in a large house on the village green. The school thrived until she granted the request of Sarah Harris, a black servant girl, to attend classes. When the parents of her white students threatened to withdraw their daughters, Crandall conferred with Boston abolitionist William Lloyd Garrison, editor of the Liberator
