(PROVIDENTIENSIS) Co-extensive with the State of Rhode Island. When erected (17 Feb., 1872) it included also that portion of south-eastern Massachusetts which has since 14 March, 1904, been set off as the Diocese of Fall River (q. v.). It thus embraces an entire state, the majority of whose population is Roman Catholic (State Census, 1905). The city of Providence was the residence of the Bishop of Hartford from the establishment of that see in 1844 (see HARTFORD, DIOCESE OF). In 1847 a Brief authorizing this transfer of residence was obtained from the Propaganda. The first appearance of Roman Catholic worship in the colony of Rhode Island was in the latter part of 1780, when the French army under Rochambeau encamped at Newport and Providence. It is known that there were several chaplains with the army who often said Mass publicly. Shortly afterwards (Feb., 1783) the colonial legislature repealed the act disfranchising Roman Catholics . The Negro uprising in Guadeloupe, which followed the

Fall River
DIOCESE OF FALL RIVER (RIVERORMENSIS), U.S.A. A suffragan see of the Province of Boston ; comprises the counties of Bristol, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket, with the towns of Marion, Mattapoisett and Wareham in Plymouth county, Massachusetts, an area of 1194 square miles. It was created 12 March, 1904, by a division of the Diocese of Providence, which had included the entire State of Rhode Island and a portion of south-eastern Massachusetts, and has the distinction of being the first diocese erected by Pope Pius X . The total population of the diocese is 309,438, of which 151,633 are Catholics. Among the latter are Americans, Irish, French-Canadians, Portuguese, Poles, and Italians, with some few Greeks and Syrians. The heavy immigration in years past of the Irish and French-Canadian people has caused them to far outnumber the Catholics of other nationalities; but this immigration is now at a standstill, while that of Portuguese and Poles is steadily on the increase. The diocese, by reason of recent creation, has no history of its own, its records being included in the history of the Dioceses of Boston , Hartford, and Providence (q. v.), in each of which its territory has successively been included.

An independent study conducted by the sponsoring pastors of two Pawtuxet Valley schools resulted in a recommendation to merge the two schools into a new entity. That recommendation was formally proposed by the diocesan School Board in March and Bishop Robert E. Mulvee approved the consolidation of St. John the Baptist School in West Warwick and Notre Dame Regional School in Coventry. The new Catholic school will be known as Christ the Redeemer Academy and will be located at the West Warwick site currently housing St. John the Baptist School. Dr. Frank Pallotta, current principal at St. Mary School, Providence, has been appointed the Academy's first principal. He will officially begin his tenure on July 1. Registrations for Christ the Redeemer Academy are open to all students Pre-K through grade 8. Registration materials can be obtained by calling Mrs. Margaret Halpin, interim principal, at 278-4550. Another professional study conducted by the schools in the Providence Collaborative of Inner City Schools recommended that two of the four schools, Holy Name of Jesus and St. Mary, be consolidated into the Collaborative's two other schools, Bishop McVinney Regional School and Holy Ghost School, and that Holy Ghost School be reconstituted from a parish school to a diocesan school. Bishop Mulvee also approved these recommendations last March.

The British "Public Schools"
From the 1850s to the 1950s, many of the non-denominational independent schools of British Columbia were patterned on the "public schools" of Great Britain. The British public schools were not "public" in the common sense of the word. They were not intended for the children of ordinary or common families; rather, they catered to the British aristocracy and to affluent middle-class families. The elite British boarding schools were styled "public" because many of them were incorporated by (public) statute and because they were not privately owned. Also, unlike some of the old English grammar schools, they were open, on a fee-paying basis, to the "public" - i.e. to students from any part of the country and not simply to children of local residents. By the end of the nineteenth century, the British public schools enjoyed tremendous prestige, not because they offered a high calibre of academic instruction but because they developed character in their pupils. Character involved resourcefulness and self-reliance, respect for tradition and loyalty (to one's school and, by extension, to one's country.) Indeed, the success of the British Empire was attributed in large part to the spirit of the British public schools. Not surprisingly, then, the British public school system was emulated by imperial enthusiasts who established private schools for the sons and daughters of influential, anglophile families in British Columbia.

"Off-Reservation Boarding Schools in Contemporary Indian Education"
- The historical perception of off-reservation boarding schools as institutions of cultural genocide conflicts with the strong support for the remaining residential schools from the Indian communities they serve. Reconciling the supposed contradictions requires close examination of the changes that have occurred in the goals and philosophies of these schools. My research examines these changes in two off-reservation boarding schools still in operation, Santa Fe Indian School, Santa Fe, New Mexico, and Chemawa Indian School, Salem, Oregon. "The Social and Economic Effects of the US Dollar in 21st Century Cuba"
- With the legalization of the US dollar in 1993, and increases in the flow of currency into Cuba from migration and tourism, the Cuban economy and society have both seen widening divisions between the dollar sector and the peso sector. The dollar has not only created a difference between the rich and the poor but has also created increased separation along racial and regional lines. Along with the influx of American dollars has been an influx of US cultural and material ideas as well, which I see as the first step towards the propagation of US cultural values in Cuban society.
