Master Teacher
Lisa Ruppe Brumley
Time Allotment
Two 45-minute periods
Overview
After much attempt, the Englishmen, or colonists, could not convince the British Parliament to remove the taxes on them. Many events led up to the American victory. Those such as the Boston Tea Party, the Battle at Bunker Hill, and the capture of Trenton were all events that finally ended in American victory and freedom from Britain. Through the activities in this lesson, students will become familiar with the road that led to the American Revolution and the major events that happened on the path. After exploring the Web sites, students will be more knowledgeable of the Boston Tea Party, the Intolerable Acts placed on the colonists, and the First Continental Congress meeting. This lesson will be used as part of a unit on the American Revolutionary War.

SPANISH REVOLUTION OF 1936
See Jamal Hannah's Spain pages , and Archie Anderson's account of the November 1996 reunion . Eugene W. Plawiuk's extraordinarily well-linked site on Spain When Franco's fascist troops invaded Spain in July 1936 with the purpose of overthrowing the young and unstable Republic, the Spanish working class responded by making a revolution that went much further toward realizing the classless and stateless ideal of proletarian socialism than any preceding popular revolt. Spontaneously and almost overnight, workers seized factories and other workplaces; land was collectivized; workers' militias were formed throughout the country; the churchage-old enemy of all workingclass radicalism and indeed, openly profascistwas dismantled, and its property confiscated; established political institutions disintegrated or were taken over by workers' committees. In a decade of cataclysmic worldwide depression and spreading fascism, the revolution in Spain signaled a message of renewed hope to the scattered forces of working-class emancipation throughout the globe, not least in the United States. American intellectuals and unionists responded very favorably; for an overview of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, click here Supporting the workers' revolution were Spain's largest unions, the anarcho-syndicalist

The role of anarchism in the Spanish Revolution or Spanish Civil War of 1936 is too often absent from histories of this struggle against fascism. Alongside the war millions of workers collectivised the land and took over industry to pursue their vision of a new society. A Curriculum of United States Labor History for Teachers.
Sponsored by the Illinois Labor History Society
[Table of Contents]
Introduction
The United States has the bloodiest history of labor of any industrialized nation on Earth. It is a story rich in human drama and tragedy. It is also one of progress and hope. This is a resource that teachers of United States history can use to incorporate our rich social and labor history into their courses. Using the ideas employed here teachers will increase student understanding of the American economic system and the important issues we all face as workers today. The concepts and lessons will build on each other so that at the end of the school year the student should have a working knowledge of the importance of labor in society. A guiding theme of this work is how laborers have earned a voice in the workplace and increased their share of the economic pie. Teachers should highlight the stark contrast between today's working environment and the relationship between workers and owners of the past. The scope of United States history has been divided into eleven basic periods. These will correspond with the unit divisions that many modern textbook companies use. In each period the main events and issues of US labor history are introduced. Concepts, ideas and resources are presented to aid the teacher. In several of the units specific lessons are available for immediate use.
