    http://www.givingto.msu.edu/pgaol/html/retirement_assets.html
Retirement Plan Assets At a Glance Retirement plan assets used for charitable giving purposes may offer substantial tax benefits to donors, especially when used to make testamentary gifts. These gifts will be deductible for federal gift or estate tax purposes and often for state death tax purposes as well. Income tax benefits may be attractive too. Unlike a noncharitable beneficiary, a charity generally will owe no federal or state income taxes on such a gift which would be taxed as Income in Respect of a Decedent (IRD) if received by an individual beneficiary following a plan participant's death (more on IRD later). Retirement plan assets are a substantial source of wealth for many potential donors, and the largest single holding of some. Such assets may be held in: qualified pension, profit-sharing and stock bonus plans; individual retirement accounts and annuities (IRAs); Keogh (HR-10) plans for the self-employed; section 401(k) plans; and section 403(b) plans (tax-sheltered annuities). Because of the complexity of minimum distribution requirements and other legal rules related to retirement plan assets, careful planning is necessary when contemplating a gift or bequest of IRA or retirement plan assets to a charity. Tax Treatment of Qualified Retirement Plans and IRAs A general understanding of how retirement plans and IRAs are taxed is an important backdrop for promoting charitable gifts of retirement plan assets.

    180. TIAA-CREF Web Center | Product Profile: Retirement Plans
TIAACREF provides defined contribution retirement plans through your employer. Canyou invest in a TIAA-CREF retirement plan? Find out more.
    http://www.tiaa-cref.org/product_profiles/ras.html
TIAA-CREF provides defined contribution retirement plans through your employer. These plans are sometimes referred to as retirement (or group retirement) annuity contracts. How much you and your employer will invest over time is specified in the contract. Typically, contributions are made on a tax-deferred basis, which means you don't pay taxes until you draw on the assets.*
    Here's how it works:
Your employer determines the plan's features, such as the contribution schedule, allocation choices, income options, and vesting rules. You decide how to allocate the contributions among the available choices and when the time comes, how you want to take your benefits. TIAA-CREF sets up the plan according to your employer's instructions, then allocates contributions and pays benefits according to your wishes.
Expenses: Unlike most, TIAA-CREF annuities have no sales charges. And as a nonprofit organization, we keep expenses low, which means that more of your dollars are working for you. On average, annual expenses are less than 1 percent. Investments: You can choose from a variety of annuity accounts, and at some employers, mutual fund accounts, to allocate contributions. You can change your allocation of future contributions at any time or transfer some or all of your funds among accounts, with no tax implications.
