How Can Writers Use the Internet?
at the Southeastern Writers Conference
June 22, 1998 The Internet offers so many wonderful resources that will make researching for your next novel much easier. Let's see what we can find: Are you writing an historical novel, or a novel that requires your characters to wear a certain type of apparel? Visit and look under Costumes. Categories include Elizabethan Costumes, Biblical Costumes, and the History of Costumes. Here's a site that offers information on Historical Boys Clothing. Of course, the Net has its share of thesauruses and dictionaries. But with Casey's Snow Day Reverse Dictionary you'll find the remedy for that "tip-of-the-tongue" feeling when you know what the word means but can't think of the word. Type in a definition, and Casey's dictionary will tell you which word you're trying to think of. Need to know crime statistics? The Bureau of Justice Statistics offers crime and arrest data, criminal justice data, and more, broken down by federal, state, county, and city. Organized Crime Registry Read about the America Mafia, Russian Mafia, La Cosa Nostra, motorcycle gangs, Yakuza, Jamaican posses, and drug cartels.

These topics have been a life long fascination and I have now been able to work them into my writing.
Rather than show my anger and frustration, I allow my characters to channel that anger. It works.
Ken Hudnall Ken Hudnall, a 100% disabled veteran is a former radio talk show host, who has published several books ranging from a new theory regarding Unidentified Fying Objects to a horror series that incorporates Native American Legends. Booksandauthors.net: Where did you grow up and was erading and writing a part of your life? Who were your earliest influences and why? Ken Hudnall: I grew up on a farm outside of Murfreesboro, Tennessee in an ante-bellum house built about 1815. - when I went to town on Saturday, I would be dropped of at the library and check out all that I could carry, read them all week and then go back for more. I read every mystery that the library had on its shevles or could order for me. My earliest author who's work I followed closely was Andre Norton and a large number of mystery writers. I loved the exploration that she (Andre Norton) talked about as well as the action/adventure aspects.

I love to write and find it a pleasurable and rewarding experience. I've been told that I've always had my 'writer's voice.' I have stories 'stored' in my head, like planes stacked up over O'Hare Field in Chicago, waiting to come out.
F inally, who's got the train? It had to be a faction with a lot to gain, who could elicit compassion from readers. When the President doesn't announce the country's plight at a major press conference, things begin to unravel.
I generally read two or three books a week, if my eyes hold up after hours looking at a computer screen - writing or researching.
Larry Purcell Larry Purcell has pursued a career in the Amazon.com and IUniverse.com Booksandauthors.net: Where did you grow up and was reading and writing a part of your life? Who were your earliest influences and why?
Larry Purcell: I was born in Jersey City, NJ, lived in Hoboken for a while, then several towns in north Jersey. My first time out of the state was going away to college - Mount Saint Mary's in Emmitsburg, MD - where I started out in pre-med, but couldn't pass chemistry so I changed majors. But not to English.

Last updated : 11th June 2004 Sadly once again, the promise held out by the nominations for British talent in this year's Tony Awards wasn't quite realised in the number of winners - the closest we came was Henry IV winning Best Play Revival. It was a year for outsiders beating the favourites, with the puppet musical Avenue Q taking Best Musical and Best Score, beating the smash of the season Wicked (although it took 3 awards including Best Actress for Idina Menzel). No show swept the board this year, and the most awards won by a single show was 5 (including Best Musical Revival) which went to Stephen Sondheim’s Assasins . The full list of winners can be found on the Tony Awards web site via the link from the New York section of TheatreNet.

Researching the Net: Name That Character
    By: Su Kopil
    Date:
His mouth captured hers in a kiss sweeter than the scent of honeysuckle floating on the breeze. He pulled her closer. Tentatively, her hand curled around his neck then lost itself in his thick mane. He moaned; his kiss deepening. He awoke a hunger in her that couldn't be sated. She wanted more - more kisses, more of she didn't know what. When he finally pulled away, she thought she would die with the want.
"Don't you think it's about time you called me by my given name?" He spoke with a husky intensity.
    "Yes, Irving."
Irving? Why not Brad or Jake or Slick? Okay, maybe Slick isn't exactly what we're after. But giving your character an appropriate name is an important element in a novel. Just as faulty research can throw a reader out of your story so can an ill-fitting name.
Names clue us in to a characters ethnic background and the general time frame in which they were born. You wouldn't name your nineteenth century Amish character Zork, would you? Just as the name Ian MacGregor doesn't invoke an image of a Regency Lord.
Names also have meanings which can symbolize certain traits in your characters. For instance, according to babynames.com, Dara means compassion, Emilie means ambitious, industrious, and Prudence means cautious, intelligent.

    99. Cathy Barton And Dave Para: Researching The Music
in the TransMississippi West is fascinating and peculiar in Civil War scholarship and a subject often too remote and too difficult for most writers to tackle.
    http://www.bartonpara.com/civilwar/
Civil War Music of the Western Border
Our focus on tradtional music from our own Missouri/Ozark region led us to study the events of the Civil War in our own area. With our own local historian and songwriter Bob Dyer we eventually produced the only compilation of music from the Civil War in the West. We recorded two volumes of music which include booklets of extensive notes about the songs as well as the lyrics, many of which follow. The war in the Trans-Mississippi West is fascinating and peculiar in Civil War scholarship and a subject often too remote and too difficult for most writers to tackle. The primary sources and certainly the earliest secondary sources suffer from very biased perspectives, causing many a historian and writer to fail in what should be an objective study of what can be called an American Bosnia. Pictured is a photo of a wax reconstruction of the head of William Clarke Quantrill , the most infamous of the guerrilla leaders in the border war. In addition to giving Frank and Jesse James some on-the-job training for their later outlaw careers, Quantrill played the largest role in the bloodiest and most widespread guerrilla warfare during the Civil War. This theater of war begins years before the firing on Fort Sumter in 1861 and, with the career of James/Younger gang, extends for many years after peace is signed at Appomatox. Quantrill's reconstructed wax head, stored in a refrigerator in the historical museum of his hometown of Dover, Ohio, symbolizes a personal story that is fascinating even after his death.
