Political parties of the United States traditionally divide the available spectrum of choices into two camps. The first is known as the "major parties" and the second as the "third parties" camp. This is due to the fact that the United States has a two-party system , with the two largest centrist parties dividing the vote between themselves in the national elections. This is partly a consequence of the first-past-the-post election system but also due to restrictive ballot access laws imposed on third parties. After our successful campaign season last fall we are looking forward to a year of continued prosperity and success. Columbia County was successful in helping elect New York’s great Governor George E. Pataki; locally, we saw Holly Tanner elected as County Clerk and we also re-elected Congressman John Sweeney and our Assembly representatives – Pat Casale, Dan Hooker and Pat Manning. We are gratified that we were able to elect and/or return our qualified and dedicated Republican officials to office. I would like to thank you for your help and support in doing this. This year, we are focusing our efforts on the local level and we have a very busy season coming up. We will be electing our District Attorney, Treasurer, County Judge and a majority of our Town Supervisors. We will be looking for your help and support again, as we strive to return our candidates to the offices that they run so efficiently and well. Beth Cozzolino as District Attorney and Ken Wilber as Treasurer do a tremendous job for Columbia County and it will be important to return them to their posts so they can continue working hard for us.
