Is this a snake with legs or what?
So you found a reptilian you say! Let me guess, it's more than likely a turtle with a broken shell. Yes they are quite popular with all of these new roads being built. And YES the veterinarian can usually patch things up.
Turtles will cross roads when looking for a place to dig a nest to lay their eggs or just to find a better place to live. Their babies may cross the roads in search of water. If you help a turtle cross the road, make certain you carry the turtle in the same direction it was traveling, or it will turn and head back across the road. Wash your hands after handling the turtle because it can carry salmonella, a bacteria that can make you sick. Be careful not to handle the snapping turtle. It has a long tail, a short temper and can extend its flexible neck to reach around and bite you. Hence the name snapping turtle! Did you find a toad?

Peatlands are perfect habitats for amphibians, as they spend the first part of their life in water. Northern Ireland's two species of amphibians occur in peatlands:
  • The common frog is a characteristic peatland animal, found in both lowland and upland bogs. Breeding newts are usually associated with alkaline pools but also live in acidic bog pools.
The common lizard breeds on land and is not adapted to living in very wet habitats but often lives in the drier parts of a bog. They are more likely to be seen on upland blanket bogs. The table below gives information on amphibian and reptile species found in Northern Ireland peatlands. http://www.wildherps.com/references.html
This is a partial list of the reference materials that I've used to identify wild herps or just learn more about them. It's not a particularly well-balanced or representative list, as it is heavily biased towards parts of the world that I have personally visited.
But first, you should check out Ellin Beltz's site that explains the meanings of the scientific names of North American amphibians and reptiles, because it is so cool. Then you can read more about names at the bottom of this page Handbook of Reptiles and Amphibians of Florida, Part One: The Snakes, Second Edition
by Ray E. Ashton, Jr. and Patricia Sawyer Ashton
Windward Publishing Inc, Miami, FL, 1988 This is a useful and well-researched field guide. Each species is illustrated with one or more color photos mixed in with the text, and a range map by Florida county as well as a smaller map showing the entire range in the U.S. The text is informative but a little dry. An uninspired layout makes it a little harder to find what you're looking for than it should be. Overall a good to very good field guide, but Tennant's newer one is even better.

In Your Backyard Reptiles and Amphibians Floridians are lucky to share their state with a wide variety of reptiles and amphibians. Thanks to its unique geological history, climate and diverse plant communities, Florida has 127 species of native herptiles or "herps" (from the Greek herpeton, meaning "creeping thing"). With so many "creeping" (and hopping, slithering and swimming) critters around, it's no wonder that some may choose to make their home near where you choose to make yours! Below are representatives of the Florida salamanders, frogs, turtles, lizards and snakes you are most likely to run into in your backyard or side garden, plus some hints on how to make them happy. If you are lucky enough to live next to some woods, a stream or a pond, you may see some "herps" not listed here. For pictures and more information about all of these, we recommend the field guides listed in the " For further information "
