Alligators and Crocodiles rs Frogs and Toads Turtles and Tortoises Lizards Southwest Florida is home to many species of reptiles; some more conspicuous than others, but all are a fascinating addition to the rich diversity of wildlife found in the region. Many of Florida's reptiles are rare or are experiencing serious population declines. Habitat destruction, over-collecting, and deliberate or accidental killing have threatened several species with extinction. Florida has enacted laws to help protect certain animals and to ensure the survival of healthy populations .
American Alligator
Eastern Coral Snake Florida has more species of non-venomous snakes than any other state east of Texas. There are only 6 species of venomous snakes in Florida, so the venomous snakes are relatively rare. Southwest Florida's non-venomous snakes come in a variety of sizes and colors and are found in every habitat, including the backyard. However, many of Florida's snakes are becoming far less common, and some are now protected by law.

Ten Reasons to Visit Poland (click on any image to see a larger version) The Nietoperek Bat reserve, part of the second world war Miedzyrzecz Fortified Bunker system, in the west of Poland is home to some of the continent's rarest bat species , including: Greater Mouse-eared, Barbastelle, Bechstein's, Whiskered, Natterer's, Brown Long-eared, Serotine and several others. More White Stork 's nest in Poland than in any other country. Their nests can be seen on rooftops, towers, chimneys, telephone-poles, trees, and specially constructed nest towers. According to the latest research "every fourth stork in the world is Polish". Wild Boar (sometimes known as wild hog) can be found all over the country. Most of them live in the many forests, but some even make their home in cities ! If you're travelling after dusk you may come across a group of them out for an evening stroll! The largest concentration of European Bison live in Europe's last remaining primeval forest, the Bialowieza National Park. The Bison is Europe's largest mammal and males can stand over 6 feet tall, be longer than 9 feet, and weigh over 2,000 lbs.

About Mammals, Reptiles, and Amphibians About Mammals: Mammals are so named because after birth, young of all species, except opossums, nurse outside their mother's body. Newborn opossums nurse from within their mother's pouch for about 80 days. Diets of mammals vary. Rabbits, squirrels, prairie dogs, beavers, rodents, and deer eat only plants. Raptors, coyotes, red foxes, raccoons, badgers, shrews, striped skunks and bobcats prey upon members of these species. Opossums, coyotes, raccoons, and skunks eat a variety of animal and plant foods.
About Reptiles: About Amphibians: Amphibians begin life as eggs deposited in water. They later metamorphose (change bodies) into tadpoles and then into adults. Adults are more terrestrial than tadpoles and eggs, but still are dependent on water. Amphibians eat aquatic (water living) and terrestrial insects, tadpoles, fish, frogs, and toads. Amphibians also are important food items for wading birds, raptors, and some mammals, such as striped skunks and raccoons.

NATURAL HISTORY Wildlife Northwestern Belize has a high diversity of wildlife due to extensive areas of intact natural habitat and relatively low levels of human disturbance. The wide range of fauna reflects the diversity of Northern Belize's many habitats. The following are brief descriptions of the more common species you might encounter when visiting each of the different ecosystems of northern Belize. The list is by no means comprehensive. You can easily access these areas at the Chan Chich/Gallon Jug area, the Rio Bravo Conservation Area, and near the Lamanai Mayan site. Lowland Broadleaf Forest Most of the lowland broadleaf forests of northern Belize support healthy populations of all 5 species of wildcat - Jaguar ( Panthera onca ), Puma ( Felis concolor ), Ocelot ( Felis pardalis ), Margay ( Felis wiedii ) and Jaguarundi ( Felis yagouaroundi ). NW Belize is an area with perhaps the largest population of wildcats in Belize probably because the natural prey base has not been hunted out. Two species of monkey inhabit the broadleaf forests of northern Belize. The howler monkey (

Florida's Exotic Wildlife The purpose of this site is to maintain information about exotic wildlife (birds, terrestrial mammals, amphibians, and reptiles) in Florida. An exotic species is one that was introduced by human activity and is free-ranging in an area to which it was not native in pre-Columbian times. These data were compiled by Commission biologists from both published sources and unpublished sources. Bill Pranty provided additional records on exotic birds. See definitions of terms used in the detailed reports The estimated trend for statewide populations of the 277 reported exotic species in Florida were categorized as follows Estimated trend in populations
  • 24 species are expanding 12 species are stable 8 species are declining 188 species have unknown population levels
  • , and
  • 44 species have no current population

Breeding status
  • 102 species have been breeding at least 10 years (but not necessarily consecutive years). 23 are less than 10 years
  • , and
  • 150 species are not reported breeding in the wild in florida

Established status
  • 60 established: populations are confirmed breeding and apparently self-sustaining for 10 or more consecutive years.
