Most types are not suitable for keeping in captivity by amateurs, many species can be aggressive and difficult to handle. Imagine the difficulties of having a violent lizard twice your size... The Savannah monitor is sold as a pet, and can be kept by the dedicated hobbyist. However, just because it is sold doesn't mean it is suitable for everyone. They are one of the mid-sized species, reaching three to four feet in length when full grown. In general, they can become tame when raised from a young age, handled appropriately and given a proper habitat As with all reptiles, the savannah monitor can suffer from internal and external parasites. Your new monitor should be checked by a vet specializing in reptiles. Make sure to keep it isolated from any other reptiles until it has been examined. Practical Pet Care Greetings, There's so much to tell you this month! We're improving things hourly at Practical Pet Care, which is why this ezine is coming out a little later than usual this month. Chat is Here! So many people said they wanted a way to talk with other pet lovers that we added a chat room. It's really slick, and has gotten a lot of people together already. Jump into the chat here I'd like to invite you to our new "Meet the Experts" chats as well. The first one starts at 6:00 pm, Pacific Time, on June 13. For those of you not sure what time that is in your part of the world, look here . Our Experts will be joining us to answer questions, and generally get to know each other. Hope to see you there! Helping Pets The Pet Mall has grown a ton since I last wrote to you. It's filling up with pet supplies at discount prices! I decided to use it as another resource to help pets, and so am donating 10% of all proceeds to responsible pet organizations! You already know that we at Practical Pet Care donate all the time we can to helping pet owners with care questions. But we want to help even more! In order to generate resources to donate to organizations like the ASPCA and the Humane Society, we're pledging money from the Pet Mall.

First a note on pet stores advice on most lizards: Most pet stores often do not give correct advice on keeping chameleons or for that matter any other lizard. Most pet stores consider reptiles a side item and rarely take the sale or care of them seriously. Often the care they suggest involves you buying crap from their store. If ever told to buy a hotrock at a pet store just walk away. Hot Rocks do not work for any reptile. They usually lead to heat burns and can cook your reptile. Additionally pet stores sell and house chameleons often in glass aquariums. If they tell you to house a chameleon in glass tell them to kiss my @$$. Chameleons need screen cages, with screen on at least two sides of the cage. I admit some

http://www.embl-heidelberg.de/~uetz/db-info/snakes_as_pets.html
From Snakes in Question: The Smithsonian Answer Book (pages 149-151) by Carl H. Ernst and George R. Zug, published by the Smithsonian Institution Press, Washington, DC Used by permission of the publisher. Not for re-use without written permission from the publisher.
We do not believe that any amphibian or reptile should be kept as a pet.
Why do we discourage keeping snakes when we are writing a book about them? Snakes are fascinating creatures, and we understand the desire to keep them in captivity. We also know many people who take good care of their snakes, but we have seen too much poor care . Too often, snakes and their kin are viewed as requiring minimum care rather than specialized care. The care provided is often inadequate, and the reptile or amphibian soon dies or experiences ongoing suffering. Though some pet-trade amphibians and reptiles are now being bred in captivity, the majority still come from wild populations. During transport to pet stores, amphibians and reptiles are typically held and shipped in unsanitary and inhumane conditions. Many die, and most of the survivors arrive in ill health. Furthermore, collecting for the pet trade has drastically reduced many populations. Thus we view the pet trade mainly as an anti-conservation activity We realize that many people want snakes as pets, so even though we discourage the practice, we will offer a few

[Download .pdf File] The leopard gecko ( Eublepharis macularius ), native of Pakistan, is a gentle, hardy, long-lived animal that is in many ways the perfect reptile pet.
Unlike their distant cousins the tokay gecko, leopards seldom even attempt to bite.
In a recent letter to the editor of Reptiles magazine, a reader noted a leopard gecko that was a family pet for almost thirty years!
Leopard geckos are also very easy to maintain in that:
  • They reach only a foot in overall length, and don't outgrow a ten or fifteen gallon aquarium They pick a single corner of the enclosure to use as a litter area, facilitating cleanup. They are nocturnal and don't require the use of expensive UV light bulbs. They don't require high heat like bearded dragons. They eat mealworms and crickets, and don't require a vegetarian diet. Virtually all leopards are now captive hatched in this country, eliminating shipping stress and parasites found in imported iguanas and other lizards.
Gecko Care
As published in our article in the premier issue of Chit Chat . Newsletter of the Global Gecko Association
Descripton:
Like many lizards, the leopard gecko has a tail which breaks off readily when grabbed by a predator. This permits the gecko to get away if attacked, but leaves a valuable food resource behind; the tail is used as a fat storage reservoir for lean periods. One of the most notable traits about leopard geckos, which has led to their great popularity, is their unusually gentle disposition. Leopards in captivity appear to recognize their keepers, and are at times content to sit on a shoulder for hours. It takes a significant amount of provoking before a leopard gecko will bite.

Pet Care Information
Winter Pet Care Tips During the chilling beauty of winter, please take a moment to consider the safety and comfort of your pet. Here are a few ideas that may help your outdoor pet survive the winter season:
  • Provide shelter for both cats and dogs. A good shelter should: Not be too big for the pet; Have a fairly small opening that can be covered by a piece of rug or soft plastic to keep the wind out; Have the opening facing away from the wind; and Be filled with straw (not hay) that is changed regularly.
Provide proper food and water for the pet: A higher calorie, brand-name/premium food is recommended, as pets burn many more calories trying to stay warm; Fresh water must be available to prevent dehydration. Eating snow will lower the pet’s body temperature. Lukewarm water should be provided at least twice a day, and checked to make sure it has not frozen over. Electric water bowls and other devices can be purchased at pet stores, that will keep your pet’s water from freezing.
Be sure your pet is in good physical condition: Make sure your pet is free from matted hair. Mats hold water and lower body temperature.

    • Persons should always wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water after handling reptiles or reptile cages. Persons at increased risk for infection or serious complications of salmonellosis (e.g., children aged less than 5 years and immunocompromised persons) should avoid contact with reptiles. Pet reptiles should be kept out of households where children aged less than 1 year and immunocomprised persons live. Families expecting a new child should remove the pet reptile from the home before the child arrives. Pet reptiles should not be kept in childcare centers. Pet reptiles should not be allowed to ream freely throughout the home of or living area. Pet reptiles should be kept out of kitchens and other food preparation of areas to revent contamination. Kitchen sinks should not be used to bathe reptiles or to wash their dishes, cages, or aquariums. If bathtubs are used for these purposes, they should be cleaned thoroughly and disinfected with bleach.
