Simon and Schusters Guide to Reptiles and Amphibians of the World > Customer Review #1: A very good deal...

When I received this book, I was a little skeptical, but it turned out to be very useful and informative. Pocket-sized yet loaded with information, its a great reference to bring to a reptile house at the zoo or a herp expo. It serves as a good identification tool for some of the more common species of reptiles and amphibians one is likely to encounter in the wild and in captivity. High quality photos are provided for each species and key field marks are described in good detail. On the whole, however, it is only useful in terms of identification down to genus level. Although this book does not cover husbandry, it gives enough details about habitat, diet, and breeding habits to serve as a starting point for information regarding the needs of different taxa in captivity. In addition, a basic introduction to the physiology and evolution of reptiles and amphibians is also included in this handy guide.

GUIDELINES FOR USE OF LIVE AMPHIBIANS AND REPTILES IN FIELD RESEARCH
compiled by
American Society of Ichthyologists and Herpetologists (ASIH)
The Herpetologists' League (HL)
Society for the Study of Amphibians and Reptiles (SSAR)
[available only online]
Introduction
Consistent with our long standing interests in conservation, education, research and the general well-being of amphibians and reptiles, the ASIH, HL and SSAR support the following guidelines and principles for scientists conducting field research on these animals. As professional biologists specializing in herpetology and concerned with the welfare of these animals, we recognize that guidelines for the laboratory care and use of domesticated stocks of amphibians and reptiles are frequently impossible to apply without endangering the well-being of wild-caught animals. Such guidelines may also preclude techniques or types of investigations known to have minimal adverse effects on individuals or populations (1, 20), and which are necessary for the acquisition of new knowledge. The humane treatment of wild vertebrates in field research is both an ethical and a scientific necessity. Traumatized animals may exhibit abnormal physiological, behavioral and ecological responses that defeat the purposes of the investigation (21, 25). It is of particular importance that animals which are captured and marked be returned to the wild without impairment to resuming their normal activities, and that habitats essential for these activities not be rendered unsuitable in the course of capture efforts.

Completely Illustrated Atlas of Reptiles and Amphibians for the Terrarium > Customer Review #1: Base Texts are Essential, just like this one!!

I actually bought this book many years ago and consider it one of the best investments I have ever made. As a taxonomist and herpetologist for the past 15 years it has been the book I could always rely on for a quick, easy to look up reference for what someone else is talking about. I read many articles, both scientific and general, many times they are not specifically about species I am immediately familiar with. This book has been my lifesaver. All packaged in one (rather hefty) volume in a way that is easily looked up I can find out exactly what someone else is talking about, see a picture, and get a little bit of information about the species. Its does not contain intimate details of each species, but that is not what it should be used for. It is like a big dictionary, but with pictures and a little extra information. I recommend this book not as one of your major texts but as a comprehensive list that will let you know what you are reading about when you are forced to admit you are outside your general knowledge. It will back up all your other readings.

Vey good The vast majority of info in the book was 100% accurate. However, I disagree with several cage sizes he reccomends. His savvana cgae size is somewhat larger than most people use, and his statment that you could put 4 leopard geckos in a 10 gallon seemed a bit unreal. Most leo breeders say no more than 2 in a ten gallon. Otherwise, a prefect book a must read for all saurion enthusiasts lizard care from a to z is the most comprehensive and informative book on reptile care that i have read in a long time. a variety of species are covered in considerable depth. it also includes information on cage construction, and general rules of thumb for the care of most common (and many uncommon) species found in the pet industry. an absolute must-buy This is a great book for beginer-intermediate lizard keepers I enjoyed this book due to its wide variety of infomation and all of the great illustrations and diagrams on how to acutally set up the terrarium for the lizards. I currently use several of the books ideas for my lizard collection. I give this book two thumbs up.

AMPHIBIANS
IN GENERAL T he best-known amphibians are frogs, toads, and salamanders. Compared to the classes of other higher animals animals with backbones amphibians are very primitive creatures. According to the fossil record, here is approximately when the major groups of land animals appeared: Birds...... about 170 million years ago
Mammals.... about 220 million years ago
Reptiles... about 320 million years ago
Amphibians: about 400 million years ago
Fish....... about 500 million years ago
Life originated in the seas. The first animals were simple ones without backbones "invertebrate" animals such as segmented worms, sponges, and corals. The first fish were so simple that they didn't even have jawbones for opening and closing their mouths. The first land animals with backbones were the amphibians. The oldest amphibian fossils look like fish with thick, muscular fins. That's because amphibians arose from early fish. The first amphibians lived more in water than on dry land. At the MyHerp.Com

"These foul and loathsome animals ... their Creator has not exerted his powers (to make) many of them." So said the "Father of Taxonomy," Carl von Linne (Carolus Linnaeus), who invented the system for naming, ranking, and classifying organisms. While his classifications influenced generations of biologists, science has come a long way in the nearly 250 years since Linnaeus voiced his revulsion for amphibians and reptiles. Herpetology has asserted itself as a more significant discipline, acknowledging the importance and diversity of amphibian and reptile species around the world. The comprehensively details the characteristics, behavior, ecology and evolution of all reptiles and amphibians. In clear, easy-to-read language, this highly engaging book examines the astonishing diversity of the two groups, while emphasizing the need to conserve species on the verge of extinction. The
