The following is a list of herpetological societies and clubs from around the world. They vary from heavyweight scientifically-orientated bodies to local clubs with a few members who have an interest in certain reptiles or amphibians. HERPETOLOGY: REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS
Cold-blooded terrestrial vertebrates
Introduction Herpetology may be loosely defined as the study of, or interest in, the cold-blooded terrestrial vertebrates, reptiles and amphibians. These pages are devoted to reptiles and amphibians, principally their care in captivity but also their conservation in the wild and their classification. Although the two groups, or classes, are actually substantially different in many ways, what unites them is their "cold-blooded" (or poikilothermic ) body mechanism, a characteristic that they share with the fish. It seems that those who keep reptiles often have an interest in, or at least knowledge of, amphibians, and vice versa. Certainly both reptiles and amphibians seem to have a common bond in both the mystique and often the misplaced loathing that has surrounded them. Happily some of the less rational fear and disliking for these ancient creatures is now being dispelled, although some remain objects of suspicion, notably the snakes. Unfortunately at the same time as we are learning more about "herps" (a shorthand term for reptiles and amphibians), they are being threatened as never before, principally by human activity. Although the pet trade must take some of the blame (collecting animals from the wild was until recently quite unregulated), the main problem is ecological: destruction of their natural habitat, whether in the Third World or technologically advanced nations, plus pollution which has a profound effect on amphibians in particular. Fortunately these dangers have now been recognised and people at all levels are taking action to try to reverse the tide before it is too late.

If you have already read the new content here, you can skip the text and go to the listings The majority of herp societies are volunteer organizations, started and continued by people interested in herp natural history, keeping and breeding. Many of them are incorporated as nonprofits, with the board of directors serving without remuneration, with funding to keep the organizations going coming from memberships, donations, raffles, tee-shirt and book sales. The addresses for these organizations may be someone's home or place of business. Rarely does such an organization actually have an office, with full time staff where people looking for information can just drop in or voicemail you can leave a message on at 3 A.M. If fact, since you may be calling someone at their home or place of business, call during normal business hours and the very early evening, not in the early morning or mid-late evening. Please don't give these generous individuals any reason to regret that they have volunteered to help the organization.

FYI's Snakes and Such Most people who take the time to do a site, have knowledge of some sort, there are very few who are true experts in all the many facets of Herpetology. So by gathering hundreds of sites and attempting to sort them by interest, you should be able locate most anything you would ever need to know here. Please remember that sites that dealer's may also offer great information. However, I have not done business with any of these companies (my snakes were local unwanted pets). Always get references before buying. (i) - Sites offering information

    ECOVIEWS
HELP IS ON THE WAY FOR DISAPPEARING REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS by Whit Gibbons A certain group of beleaguered animals and their habitats may at last have people on their side, in North America and perhaps the whole world. And you may as well become familiar with a word you will hear more and more: herpetofauna, the general name for reptiles and amphibians, a group facing a crisis. Snakes, turtles, and lizards among the reptiles, and frogs and salamanders among the amphibians have been steadily disappearing from much of the United States during the past few decades. One example is the southern hognose snake, a small harmless species that once lived from Mississippi to North Carolina. No specimens have been seen in Alabama or Mississippi for more than 15 years. Another is the flatwoods salamander of the Southeast, the most recent species to be added to the federal list of threatened species. And the list goes on and on, from California to Maine to Florida. A new organization known as Partners in Amphibian and Reptile Conservation (PARC) could be the answer to helping maintain the herpetofaunal component of our country's natural heritage and recover some of what we have almost lost. A recent meeting in Atlanta was the first national gathering of individuals who support PARC. Based on attendance, PARC is the most diverse group of individuals and organizations that have ever worked together to address the problems confronting reptiles and amphibians on a national and global scale.
