161. Medieval Recipies
Favourite medieval and renaissance recipes adapted for the modern cook.
http://www.bitwise.net/~ken-bill/med-p1.htm

Medieval feasts have been hobby of mine since I was asked to prepare a Medieval dinner for a SCA (Society for Creative Anachronism) event while in college. It was an unqualified disaster, but spurred me on with a desire to never let that happen again. Since that time, I've done a good deal more research, have had a fair amount more experience in cooking, and have collected an invaluable library of Medieval and Renaissance cookbooks. Here are some of my favorite recipes from the period. I've started each recipe of with the original text. As you'll see, there are few if any measurements of ingredients, so feel free to adjust amounts to suit your own taste without undue worry about staying authentic. Remember that that's what you'd be doing in the Middle Ages anyway. Have fun.
herb and flower salads
lemon salad
chicken with orange and lemon
blank-mang, a chicken and rice dish ...
cherry pottage
These recipes are all scaled to serve 4 to 6 people.

164. Tapia's Gold
Tapia's Gold, a musical group performing medieval, renaissance, and other music from the past
http://www.tapiasgold.com/
Tiburcio Tapia was a rancher in southern California in the early 1800s. According to legend, he buried a treasure to safeguard it against thieves. Some say it was a chest of gold coins, buried beneath the roots of a great tree. His treasure was never recovered. Tapia's Gold brings to life the music of past ages, a treasure for today's world. We specialize in the music and musical instruments of the European Renaissance and Middle Ages, with forays into the music of early California and other periods. We appreciate historical authenticity, but are not bound by it, for the past touches the present in many ways.

    The Digital Scriptorium
What Is It? The Digital Scriptorium was conceived as an image database of dated and datable medieval and renaissance manuscripts, intended to unite scattered resources into an international tool for teaching and scholarly research. It has evolved into a general union catalog designed for the use of paleographers, codicologists, art historians, textual scholars and other researchers. As a visual catalog, it allows scholars to verify with their own eyes cataloguing information about places and dates of origin, scripts, artistic styles, and quality. It documents visually even those manuscripts that traditionally would have been unlikely candidates for reproduction. It provides public access to fragile materials otherwise available only within libraries. Because it is web-based, it encourages interaction between the knowledge of scholars and the holdings of libraries to build an ever-enriched and corrected flow of information.

Ginger's Favorite Links Tights are an important part of Renaissance-era costuming for both men and women. And the place to come for tights of all colors is Faire Pair Tights . Here you will find basic cotton tights for everyday wear as well as the crushed and liquid velvets that are so popular with the upper classes. And now introducing Lux Velvets, which are a little kinder to the budget! Faire Pair tights are comfortable and made to fit a wide range of body sizes and shapes. The stretch material allows the tights to shape themselves to you while providing ease of movement without binding. A bit of extra length assures even the longest legs of a good fit. Tights are not just something to wear as part of a costume. Faire Pair tights can be worn at home, at work or at play. Cotton and nylon tights are excellent for runners, cyclists or just working out at the gym. Cottons and velvets are remarkably comfortable for equestrians (several of Ginger's Junkies won't ride in anything else). Add a long shirt or a big sweater to a pair of velvet tights and you have a casually elegant look. Who is The Tights Goddess?

Faire troupe in full costume recreates medieval and renaissance music and dance, primarily English Country Dance. Washington, DC based. School visitation, teaching, and an events schedule.
    http://www.wam.umd.edu/~eowyn/3LF
(Three Left Feet) is a dance group and band organized to recreate and explore medieval music and renaissance music and dance, concentrating primarily on English Country Dance. The name Thrir Venstri Fœtr is Old Norse for "Three Left Feet," and the group is known by the English version of its name as well as the Norse. We are based in the Washingon, DC area and have performed at many different events including the Washington Revels 's May Fair (since 1991), the Maryland Renaissance Festival (1990-1999), and the Battle of Hastings put on by Markland , as well as assorted holiday parties and weddings. We perform for festivals and fairs, weddings, and "living history" demonstrations at schools. Our schedule of rehearsals and performances is on a separate page. As is a list of our dances (with links to steps for several dances) and the basic figures We teach simple dances in many of our performances. We also teach the more complex dances to people who come to rehearsals and are interested in learning. If we are in the midst of working toward a major performance (such as the Renaissance Festival), we may not have as much time for teaching. Many of the movements and patterns in the dances are repeated across several dances and it is possible to see the evolution of the dances from early English to Contra to American Square dances. Unlike some dance styles, the basic footwork is fairly simple (e.g. two steps forward and two steps backwards, hop to the left, hop to the right, turn in place) when compared to Scottish, Highland, Irish, Clogs, etc., however, the patterns of the dancers interweaving are what can make it challenging. The group has a listserv for members. If you are not yet on the list and are a member (or are in the process of joining the group), feel free to subscribe by sending email to
