122. Castle Furnishings Has An Exceptional Selection Of Books Relating To Medieval An
Selection of books on medieval and renaissance topics.
http://www.medievalbookstore.com/
Castle Furnishings has an exceptional selection of books relating to medieval and renaissance topics. Although we primarily cater to medieval re-creators, those of a more academic inclination will also find much here to interest them. Although we carry many books on "practical" subjects, such as cooking, costuming, archery, calligraphy and metalworking, we also carry primary source material (usually translated into English), a great many art books and scholarly books from academic presses (many of these are remainders at quite reasonable prices). We sell only new books, both recently published full-price books and remainders at bargain prices. (Remainders are books that the publishers have sold at a reduction (often substantial), to get rid of excess inventory or when they are taking a book out of print.) By their nature, remainders are usually a finite commodity - if you see one you want, order it now, for when we sell out, chances are high that we will not be able to get any more. If you have seen a book, remaindered or otherwise, here in the past, that is not here now, e-mail us anyway and we will try to get it in for you. Due to major computer failure, we were without e-mail for almost 2 weeks. If you tried to contact us in January and were not successful, please try again at the

taken from Laserdisk
Selections from the Database: Perge, Elaiussa-Sebaste, Rome, Pydnae, Troia, Canosa di Puglia, Letoon, Vatican Museums, Side and Naples This suite of pages, which is under development, is the jumping-off point for an experimental series of images of classical sculpture and architecture. There are currently 945 records in this first group of pages, set out with 35 records per page: (b) by site, with thumbnail images; (b) by site, without thumbnail images; (b) by type of object, with thumbnail images; (b) by type of object, without thumbnail images; . The datarecords underlying the scheme are the same, with these choices simply dicing the material in different ways. You might also want to look at the full database, which contains 3,281 records set out with 50 records per page: (b) by site, with thumbnail images; (b) or by site, without thumbnail images; - but be warned that this is very messy indeed, and needs a lot of work. This complete database will continue to grow, and will eventually be reworked into all the above categories. The setup is experimental because it tests the viability of the laserdisk as a high-capacity (36,000 frames per platter side) storage device, clearly in competition with a computer hard disk. The beauty of the laserdisk (apart from its archival quality) is that it orders the images in a fixed series, and is accessible to the computer in under .5 seconds.

129. Poison Pen Press
Books for the reenactor and Faire patron on medieval cookery, costuming, and domestic aspects of the Middle Ages and renaissance; on line catalog and ordering information.
http://www.poisonpenpress.com
Books on medieval cookery, costuming, domestic aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Poison Pen Press sells books, specializing in medieval cookery, costuming, and other material relating to the domestic aspects of the Middle Ages and Renaissance. We have the finest list of in-print cookery titles in The Known World. Our secondary specialty is hard-to-find juvenile fantasies, in particular reprints of such authors as Alan Garner, and D W Jones. In addition, we carry a select list of historical murder mysteries, and a few books written by our friends. I am introducing a section on . This brings together items from several different sections, and includes titles on mehndi (henna work). Also, look for our new German-language historical cookbooks (for those of you who are not, as I am, linguistically challenged!) The continuing success of Harry Potter has induced publishers to reissue a number of old favorites, especially those by Diana Wynne Jones, which I am very happy to be able. Watch out for the bonanza in August.

This site is dedicated to the almost-lost arts of unarmed combat, dagger fighting and close-quarters sword combat as they were practiced throughout Europe centuries ago. Over the past ten years there has been an explosion of interest in reviving the ancient European martial arts. Many written and illustrated records of the fighting arts of Europe, especially during the Medieval and Renaissance periods, have now become freely available via the Internet. Groups and individuals all over the world are working together to translate and interpret their lessons. Consistently, what has been discovered represents a rich and sophisticated tradition, equal in all respects to the classical Asian martial arts. Just as modern practitioners look back with respect upon the ko-ryu (ancient schools) of Bujutsu, so too may they draw inspiration from the Masters of old Europe.

The Dark Ages Early scholars gave the name "Dark Ages" to the period in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire. During this period, barbarian Goths, Vandals, and Huns swept down on Europe from the north and east. They destroyed many fine buildings and works of art that had existed during Roman times. During the Dark Ages, knowledge survived only in monasteries, and there were very few schools. Many of the old arts and crafts were lost. This is why the time was called the "Dark Ages."

About Libraries
The first thing to do before beginning your research is to have a game plan. That means thinking about what you want to find out, then thinking about where you are likely to find it.
If you are having trouble planning your strategy, check out Research Strategies , by William Badke: http://www.acts.twu.ca/lbr/textbook.htm
Different libraries have different types of collections, so you will want to plan your research and finding efforts based on the materials you are looking for. Also, different libraries offer different types of services, so that is a factor too.
Types of libraries:
What resources and what kind of help you can get often depends on what libraries you visit. It's often useful to start with the libraries that are most beholden to you, either because you are affiliated with them or they get public tax money. Even if the librarians cannot answer your question there, they can sometimes refer you to other libraries that can help you.
Before visiting a library, call (or email) to check out what access to the collections you may have. Certain private university and special libraries don't allow the public in, or require special ID or references, or limit times and collections that are available to the public. Some libraries will issue you a library card (for free or for a fee) to check out books even if you are not part of their primary clientele; others won't.

What is REED?
REED is an international scholarly project that is establishing for the first time the broad context from which the great drama of Shakespeare and his contemporaries grew. REED examines the historical MSS that provide external evidence of drama, secular music, and other communal entertainment and ceremony from the Middle Ages until 1642, when the Puritans closed the London theatres. Although the project is based at Victoria University in the University of Toronto (an institution renowned for its scholarship in medieval and early modern culture), REED's internal governance is provided by an Executive Board of senior scholars in early drama and related fields. Its advisors and collections editors are drawn from Canada, the United States, Australia, and the United Kingdom. We will be providing regular reports on Executive Board activities and decisions
