Patches From the Past Scraps of Fabric, Sewing Quilting history. medieval renaissance Quilting. by Lisa Evans ~ Independent Scholar, Massachusetts.
    http://www.historyofquilts.com/precolonial.html
by Lisa Evans ~ Independent Scholar, Massachusetts The popular image of the quilt is of the quilt as modern, calico, and American. The problem with this familiar stereotype is that it doesn't go far enough. Quilted garments padded Crusader mail, quilted linens adorned Renaissance bedchambers, and quilted Evangelists were treasured at 15th century monasteries. The evidence is scattered and sometimes hard to recognize, but quilts and quilting were hardly alien to pre-colonial Europe. The word quilt is derived from the Latin culcita , meaning a padded and tied mattress. Quilting is a needlework technique involving two or more layers of fabric, usually sandwiched with padding of some sort, stitched together in a decorative pattern. The first known quilted object is a quilted linen carpet dating from that time found in a Siberian cave tomb. Whether the technique originated in Siberia or not, quilted objects such as a linen slipper began cropping up along the Silk Road between Asia and Europe between the 6th and 9th centuries. Quilting does not appear to have been done in Europe much before the 12th century, and is usually thought to have been brought back from the Middle East by the returning Crusaders. Bed quilts are mentioned in two medieval poems, the 12th century

    Medieval and Renaissance Studies
The Medieval and Renaissance Studies Program (MARS) is a center of excellence and an intellectual gathering-place for NYU's prestigious and internationally renowned faculty. MARS makes available to undergraduates New York's unique scholarly resources through the courses it sponsors, its lecture program, and its intensive, personal student advisement. The Program focuses on the history, institutions, languages, literature, thought, faith, and art of Europe from the collapse of Roman authority to about 1600 A.D. The Program's diversity of fields and the interdisciplinary relations among them make MARS study an engaging and exhilarating experience. Moreover, the personally designed program and individualized attention by the program director and outstanding NYU full-time faculty enable students to experience the intimacy and guidance of a small program within the parameters of an expansive university.
    Academic Programs
The MARS Program offers a major and minor with concentrations in Fine Arts, History, Philosophy and Religion, Music, History of Science, as well as Languages and Literatures (Classics, Comparative Literature, English, French, German, Hebrew and Judaic Studies, Italian, Middle Eastern Studies, Russian and Slavic Studies, Spanish and Portuguese). MARS is specifically designed for students who wish to develop a program around their own interests, rather than those of a rigidly structured departmental major. The MARS requirements for the major and minor are set forth in the

Battles are indicated by BOLDFACE type. All dates given are CE or BCE (Common Era or Before Common Era). Every effort has been made to assure the correctness of these dates, and to harmonize them with the current Gregorian calendar. If an event is listed under two dates, the LATER of the two is -probably- the correct Gregorian. Where any date in an Almanac-style source, or an encyclopaedia, has conflicted with a date given by a reputable historian, the historian has been taken as the authoritative source. Sometimes even the historians disagree, so I had to use my best judgement on the matter. Therefore there are no guarantees as to the exact correctness of all of the dates. If you have a better source, or a more accurate date, please let me know, but be so kind as to tell me * why * it is better or more accurate.
