A history of renaissance Drama from its Medieval Origins to the Closing of the Theatres.

Renaissance Drama
from its Medieval Origins
to the Closing of the Theatres
The early history of English drama is important because
  • it shows how the instinct for dramatic representation finds its outlets, it tells us a great deal about the workings of the popular imagination, and it throws some light on the themes and conventions of later drama.
For ease of navigation through this lengthy site, the following direct links are provided: Origins of Drama Tropes to Liturgical Drama Miracle Plays
Morality Plays
... Webster The Origins of Drama
The origins of drama as we know it are more the concern of anthropologists because drama and religious ritual seem to have been bound up with one another in the earlier stages of all civilizations. These things lie in the background of all drama:
  • Folk celebrations, Ritual miming of such elemental themes as death and resurrection, Seasonal festivals with appropriate symbolic actions.
As far as we can trace the history of English drama, it begins with the elaboration of the ecclesiastical liturgy in mutually answering dialogues. No substantial continuity can be established between the origins of European drama in the Middle Ages and the drama of Greece and Rome, which had already run its course by the time the Christian era began.

Lords of the Renaissance
Lords of the Renaissance is a game for 2-12 players set at the end of the Dark Ages. Each player starts as a Merchant Prince of a European Duchy, operating a bank or merchant company speculating in the silk trade. Players also act as a military or financial advisor to one of the great empires, advising their suzerains in matters of conquest, ship building, and the construction of cathedrals and libraries. Through the establishment of trade routes and the paying of tributes, players grow rich as they are emboldened to fight to protect their monopolies or expand their influence. Plenty of Machiavellian intrigue as players shift allegiances and conspire to become emperors themselves. The full color map is 18" X 25", stretching from England to the Levant, from the years 1460 to 1499. Over 200 Renaissance personalities and events come to life through cards representing princesses, spies, pirates, assassins, painters, engineers, reformation leaders, heretics, explorers, and much more.

The Renaissance Period (1350-1550) was the transition period between the Medieval Era and the modern world. The word renaissance means "revival" or "rebirth". This was a period of great achievements in the arts and sciences combined with deep religious concerns. The Renaissance became one of the most productive periods in all history.

169. Jean Toomer
A short introduction to the writer, and study questions about Blood Burning Moon.
http://www.rlc.dcccd.edu/annex/COMM/english/mah8420/JeanToomer.html
Jean Toomer (1894-1967) American writer Jean Toomer inspired many later Harlem Renaissance writers with his passionate and realistic portrayal of black life in the novel Cane (1923). Noted for its poetic and sensitive descriptions, Cane describes people frustrated by their conflicts with social customs and by psychological conflicts within themselves. Cane was published in 1923. A few "important" white people thought it was an extraordinary work. At a time when the best (or popular) novelists, poets, and publishers had fame not unlike the movie and rock stars of today. Toomer was himself of mixed ancestry, claiming a variety of European, African, and even Native American bloodlines. As a result, Toomer long struggled with the issue of race, both personally and professionally. As a man who could successfully "pass" for white, Toomer was a reluctant spokesperson for race conscious artists who were interested in celebrating "blackness." Instead, Toomer envisioned an American identity that would transcend race. Nevertheless, concerns with racial division inform his writing, often in a very specific manner.
