The Tapestry Historic Dance Ensemble
is dedicated to the research, re-construction and performance of historic social dance. The group's repertoire encompasses historical eras from the late 15th through the mid-19th centuries, ranging from the elegant dance forms of the European Courts to the social dances of but a few generations past in America. Court dances, country dances and ballroom dances, researched from period sources, are showcased in diverse and entertaining programs presented in colorful and authentically styled historic costume.
Few activities bring Social History more fully to life than dances from past eras; they capture the mood of an earlier age, its music, its fashions, and manners. In recent years, a growing public appreciation of our cultural heritage has awakened interest in recreating the dances of days gone by. This revival incorporates both serious scholarship and research, and the preservation, through performance and participation, of social dances from the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. The Tapestry Historic Dance Ensemble is available for performances, workshops, and programs of various lengths, themes, and historic eras. Each program is individually created for the presentation site, event or theme, and includes narration about the dances, social customs, and fashions of the historic era represented.

This Site The Web Ah, finally we got to take a bit of a break from building! Georgia was a great success, as usual, due to the efforts of our crew and the love of our patrons. We had two shops this year and therefore two crews. The auctions were amazing to see with the biggest turnout yet! In August, we sailed back into port at Pennslvania. The Lady Krim was a sight for sore eyes! The folks in PA sure know how to throw a good pirate party! Another fabulous year in Texas with a big welcome! Each year is just more fun in Texas! As always, Captain Red wishes to personally thank each and every person who was involved in our continuing success by supporting The Pirates Treasure, even during these difficult times. Everyone at the Pirates Treasure hopes you and your loved ones have a safe and happy 2004 and offers this traditional Irish blessing. May the road, rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
May the rain fall soft upon your fields.

This site is dedicated to the almost-lost arts of unarmed combat, dagger fighting and close-quarters sword combat as they were practiced throughout Europe centuries ago. Over the past ten years there has been an explosion of interest in reviving the ancient European martial arts. Many written and illustrated records of the fighting arts of Europe, especially during the Medieval and Renaissance periods, have now become freely available via the Internet. Groups and individuals all over the world are working together to translate and interpret their lessons. Consistently, what has been discovered represents a rich and sophisticated tradition, equal in all respects to the classical Asian martial arts. Just as modern practitioners look back with respect upon the ko-ryu (ancient schools) of Bujutsu, so too may they draw inspiration from the Masters of old Europe.

HUMANISM
The great intellectual movement of Renaissance Italy was humanism. The humanists believed that the Greek and Latin classics contained both all the lessons one needed to lead a moral and effective life and the best models for a powerful Latin style. They developed a new, rigorous kind of classical scholarship, with which they corrected and tried to understand the works of the Greeks and Romans, which seemed so vital to them.

Fifteenth century Although humanists had thronged the papal court since the beginning of the century, Pius II was the first real humanist to sit in the chair of Peter. Born in Siena as Enea Silvio Piccolomini, he acquired a reputation as a diplomat, belletrist, and womanizer, and was crowned poet laureate by the Emperor Frederick in 1442. After serving the emperor and the anti-Roman Council of Basel, Piccolomini joined the Roman camp in 1446. He became a cardinal in 1456 and in 1458 was elected pope. As pope, the only work of scholarship he was able to continue was his "Commentaries," a remarkably frank autobiography in which he put his passions and prejudices on full view. In the passage shown here, Pius expresses his bitter contempt for the French, who had been unwilling to join his crusade against the Great Turk.
