Italian Renaissance Art Webquest

Introduction
Did Italian Renaissance Art change and or evolve throughout the Renaissance? Art can be viewed from many different perspectives. You will be analyzing Italian Renaissance Art from four different points of view from early to late Renaissance works. You will travel through time and space to view these works of art in museums throughout Europe.
The Task
You are part of a group of artists dedicated to understanding Italian Renaissance Art. You will analyze the painting techniques used by Italian painters throughout the Renaissance. Each artist in your group of four will examine the art work from on of the following points of view:
  • Realistic Details: life-like portraiture, accurate proportions and sizes, realistic patterns and details, realistic colors and textures.
  • Light and Shadows: creating the illusion of three dimensional form (rounded) on a two dimensional (flat) surface.
  • Linear Perspective: creating the illusion of Deep Space in man-made structures and in architecture.

The Spanish always imported painters and sculptors for most of their important decorative work. Even in the 16th century, Titian was the leading painter of the Spanish court, although he was not actually present there. In architecture, a fully Renaissance structure was not built until late in the century. Near Madrid, the architects of Philip II built El Escorial, combining a monastery, a seminary, a palace, and a church. Although indebted to Italian High Renaissance style, the austere majesty and complete lack of ornamentation of this structure mark a new style in Spanish architecture.

76. Renaissance -- Focus On Florence
economy and its writers, painters, architects, and philosophers all made Florence a model of renaissance culture. Read about Florentine art and architecture.
http://www.learner.org/exhibits/renaissance/florence.html
The Renaissance was a rebirth that occurred throughout most of Europe. However, the changes that we associate with the Renaissance first occurred in the Italian city of Florence and continued to be more pervasive there than anywhere else. The city's economy and its writers, painters, architects, and philosophers all made Florence a model of Renaissance culture. Fifteenth-century Florence was an exciting place to be. In 1425 the city had a population of 60,000 and was a self-governed, independent city-state. Twelve artist guilds that regulated the trades were the basis of Florence's commercial success. Members of the guilds, who were wealthy and held positions in government, were some of Florence's most influential people in society and politics. Because of its strong economy and a political philosophy that was dedicated to the welfare of the city, Florence thrived. From The Western Tradition series. The most powerful guilds were those that represented textile workers. Much of Florence's wealth was dependent on the manufacture or trade of cloth, primarily wool. Wool of superior quality was often purchased unfinished and untreated from England and Iberia. Florentine textile workers then cleaned, carded, spun, dyed, and wove the wool into cloth of excellent quality. They sold the finished material in Italy, northern European cities, and even in eastern countries. Other textile experts purchased inferior cloth from northern cities and refinished it to create a superior product.

77. THE ENCHANTED GARDENS OF THE RENAISSANCE
A visual tour of three renaissance Gardens and their relationship to the art of the period.
http://www.bergerfoundation.ch/Jardin/index_english.html
THE ENCHANTED GARDENS OF THE RENAISSANCE
Line , Jacques-Edouard's student
Ecole des Beaux Arts, Lausanne. (1973 - 1978)
Since man has existed, and, one might almost say, before man existed, there have been gardens.
I will refer only to the Garden of Eden which was, after all, the place in which man was born. It existed even before Adam and Eve came into the picture.
One has heard of the gardens of Semiramis and the famous Hanging Gardens of Babylon.
There are traces of an Egyptian Pharaoh's garden. It was the one designed by the Pharaoh Tutmosis III within the temple complex at Karnak.
More recently, literature speaks of the splendors of the gardens of the Tivoli patrons, contemporaries of the emperor Nero. From a point of view of taste, they were considered to be the grandest, most beautiful and noblest that could be imagined. This caused a jealous Nero to have even more beautiful ones designed. They adorned the Domus Aurea. They were located under the present day parking lot at the Colosseum.
You have certainly heard of the gardens that the Empress Theodora had designed for her husband, Justinian, in Byzantium.

ITALIAN PAINTING
OF THE 16TH CENTURY
In a brief moment of equilibrium, artists achieved the harmonious balance and elevated conception that is the High Renaissance. In Rome this was shortly replaced by the self-conscious artifice of the style we call mannerism. Venice, on the other hand, produced a succession of artists devoted to color, light, and a more sensual approach to paint. (continue) planning a visit the collection ... home

ITALIAN PAINTING
OF THE 15TH CENTURY
All over Europe, the late middle ages favored a decorative and courtly manner known as the International Style. By the early 15th century, however, people in Florence and other towns of central Italy genuinely believed they were living in a new era the Renaissance. Not only did the Renaissance bring new, more naturalistic styles, but also increased patronage from private individuals, and new, secular subjects. (continue) planning a visit ... home
