Ancient Art Medieval Art Renaissance Art Baroque Art ... Ethnographic Art Renaissance Art (c. 1400-1600 CE) The Renaissance shifts from the Medieval focus on heaven to a more earthly and human-centered one. Paintings of this era concentrate on humans and the material objects of this world. The artists turned to the ancient world and its culture, signifying the "rebirth" in Western art and culture of the 1500s. Naturalism and the replication of the visible world placed an importance on the innovation of mathematical perspective. Though culture and mythology were studied, religious subjects remained prominent, and the artists moved towards a humanization of religious themes.
The museum owns works by Giovanni Bellini and workshop, Hans Holbein the Younger and studio, Bernardino Luini, and the Circle of Anton Pilgrim.

Artists by Movement:
The Northern Renaissance
Centered in Germany and the Netherlands, 15th-16th Centuries
The northern European tradition of Gothic Art was greatly affected by the technical and philosophical advancements of the Renaissance in Italy. While less concerned with studies of anatomy and linear perspective, northern artists were masters of technique, and their works are marvels of exquisite detail.
The great artists who inspired the Northern Renaissance included Robert Campin Jan van Eyck (and his brother Hubert, about whom little is known) and Rogier van der Weyden
As Italy moved into the High Renaissance , the north retained a distinct Gothic influence. Yet masters like Bosch Bruegel and Holbein were the equal of the greatest artists of the south.
In the mid-16th century, as in the south, the Northern Renaissance eventually gave way to a highly stylized Mannerism

HARLEM RENAISSANCE ART
Harlem Renaissance is a period in our nation's history that is thought of by some as the emergence of the "New Negro" according to "The Friends of the American Library". The friends provide an excellent historical account of what was going on in New York during the migration of black people to Harlem and the consequent "white flight" of Harlem. Please pay close attention to the "father of African Art", Aaron Douglas' quote regarding the nature of the movement. It is certainly an ERA that African-Americans can be proud of. A time when a once severly oppressed people, began to expect more from life. They became more vocal and expressive about the state of their affairs. They took charge of adding flair and joviality to their lifestyle. Some may say, the negro people were becoming "cultured". I prefer to think of it as, "finally 'the negro' people share their culture with the world."

A New Perspective on Science and Art
"Perspective art" was the fifteenth through seventeenth century answer to 3-D glasses: art so lifelike you want to touch it. Artists like Leonardo da Vinci wove the scientific principles of optics and illusion into their art, creating images that trick the eyes and fool the mind. Renaissance Art
The Renaissance was between 1400 A.D. to 1600 A.D. It began in the city states of Italy. The Renaissance means "rebirth" in French. This art reflected back to the classical time of Rome and Greece. This reflection back to the Greek and Romans was not limited to the arts, but all fields like literature, science, and architecture began to look back to the ancients for their inspiration. One of the major influences in the Renaissance was the change in the social structure of Europe at this time. Before the Renaissance, there were primarily three different social levels; the nobility, the churchmen, and the peasants. During the Renaissance Era a merchant class developed. These wealthy merchants would often hire artists to decorated family chapels in the local church or cathedral. Guilds (or groups of craftworks) would often compete with other guilds in the town by sponsoring large art projects. Later the arts were supported by rich patrician families. In the Renaissance, we see the first oil painting on canvas. It was also a time where the paintings took on three dimensions by the use of shadow and light. The subject matter included mythical subjects and nature scenes. Artists tried to show differences in proportions (meaning size and location of one thing compared to another in the painting) of their subject matter.

HOME TIME AND SPACE PREHISTORY MESOPOTAMIA ... Magellan Renaissance Art The Renaissance patrons wanted art that showed joy in human beauty and life's pleasures. Renaissance art is more lifelike than in the art of the Middle Ages. Renaissance artists studied perspective, or the differences in the way things look when they are close to something or far away. The artists painted in a way that showed these differences. As a result, their paintings seem to have depth. An artist from Florence named Giotto was one of the first to paint in this new style. Giotto lived more than a century before the beginning of the Renaissance, but his paintings show real emotion. The bodies look solid, and the background of his paintings shows perspective. The art produced during the Renaissance would build upon Giotto's style. Leonardo da Vinci was born in 1452 in the village of Vinci. His name means Leonardo of Vinci. Leonardo began his career working for a master painter in Florence. By 1478, Leonardo left his master and set up his own workshop. People have been trying to guess the secret behind the smile of his Mona Lisa ever since he painted it around 1505. His Last Supper shows clearly the different feelings of Jesus and his followers.
