A new classification for the literature of religion

London, UK
Abstract
The paper examines general problems in the classification of religious literature, such as the evident Christian bias of existing systems, the proliferation of specialized vocabulary, and the variation in understanding of the meaning of terms between different religions and cultures. The capacity of a facet structured classification to deal with some of these problems is considered, and the newly revised. Class 2 of the UDC is presented, with examples of schedules, and practical implementation.
Paper
Classification of religion in the major general schemes of classification
The subject of religion is dealt with in detail in all of the major general systems of library classification. In every one it is accorded main class status, often collocated with the main class for Philosophy, and includes, or is proximate to, related subjects such as Ethics, the Occult and Mysticism. In the Bibliographic Classification it is regarded as a social science, and this perhaps the nearest understanding of the class as it is presented here. As in all recent revisions of the UDC, this class draws heavily upon the Bliss Bibliographic Classification 2nd edition for both structure and vocabulary. It also represents a modification of the proposal for the revision of Class 2 published in the 1993 volume of Extensions and Corrections to the UDC. While the latter constituted a considerable advance on the existing UDC, both in the introduction of a faceted structure, and in its attempts to correct the very considerable Roman Catholic bias, it overall lacked rigour in the facet analysis and still demonstrated some evident leaning toward Christianity. The version now developed addresses both of those criticisms, and offers a more radical and a more even treatment of the world's religions.

Lecture 20 Southern Literature And Religion: Walker Percy's
Second Coming An Overview of Southern Literature and Religion
Beginning with the earliest expressions of Southern culture, religion has played a significant role in the literature of the region, a point repeatedly made in Jay Hubbell's The South in American Literature, 1607-1900 (Duke University Press, 1954). For instance, Samuel Daviesone of the key figures in the Great Awakeningwas also a very prolific author. Not surprisingly, Davies' writings, like that of other authors during the early period in Southern history, tended to be heavily ladden with religious themes and images. During the antebellum period, however, the South produced only a few major writers of note. William Gilmore Simms (from Charleston) and Edgar Allen Poe (from Richmond) were the only two authors of any real stature during this period. Lewis P. Simpson has suggested in an article entitled "Southern Spiritual Nationalism: Notes on the Background of Modern Southern Fiction" (in The Cry of Home: Cultural Nationalism and the Modern Writer

LITERATURE
Relatively accessible because of the focus here on Middle English texts, we have: SERMONS Sermons have been assembled to serve as materials for other preachers. There are "ancient" and "modern" sermon constructions. The old style was essentially formless. The new style was associated with the universities and scholasticism more intellectual than emotional. The "architecture" is ponderous: theme, subtheme, introduction, division (subtopics confirmed by biblical authority), subdivision (for more material), discussion (fleshing out with the use of quadruplex exposition see Patristic Exegesis). Since these sermons were for lay audiences, the citing of authorities is careless. In content, these tackle religious attitudes and attack contemporary life. There are "exempla," but not with any interesting characters just worn-out bare plots. (The exemplum plural: exempla are stories used by preachers to illustrate a moral. They enliven the usually dull sermonizing. The assumption is that "lewed" folk are attracted to stories. The morals are sometimes forced.) SAINTS' LEGENDS The Prologue to the South English Legendary says that men like to hear of battles of kings and knights. So similarly are constructed stories of apostles and martyrs. The legends are usually lurid tales of miracles and sadistic violence: healings, voices, blindings, bleedings, boilings, and beheadings.

Establishment Clause:
"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion ..." The Establishment Clause has generally come to mean that government cannot authorize a church, cannot pass laws that aid or favor one religion over another, cannot pass laws that favor religious belief over non belief, cannot force a person to profess a belief. In short, government must be neutral toward religion and cannot be entangled with any religion.
Religion in public schools
Minersville v. Gobitis, 310 U.S. 586 (1940) - Supreme Court rules that a public school may require students to salute the flag and pledge allegiance even if it violates their religious scruples. West Virginia State Board of Education v. Barnette, 319 U.S. 624 (1943) - Court overturns Gobitis but is broader in its scope. No one can be forced to salute the flag or say the pledge of allegiance if it violates the individual's conscience. McCollum v. Board of Education

(Office Hours: Tues/Wed 8:30-11) Course Description The purpose of this course is to study the Jewish people through literature, both from the point of view of outsiders and that of Jews themselves. Although Jews are known as "the people of the book" and have had a rich literary history since ancient times, the emergence of Jews as characters in non-religious literature is a comparatively modern phenomenon. We will begin by studying Chaucer and Shakespeare but will thereafter turn to Jewish authors in order to carefully trace the development of a body of Jewish literature written in a variety of languages (Yiddish, Hebrew, Russian, English) and cultures (European, American, Israeli). If you have a disability and therefore may have need for some type of accommodation(s) in order to participate fully in this class, please feel free to discuss your concerns in private with me AND be sure to contact Dean Jane Martindell at PBX 5145 or via electronic mail at

World Religions
Religion, History and Literature
Religion is more than just a belief in a deity. Religion is philosophy and a way of life. It can define who you are, how you view the world around you and how you interact within it. There are as many different types of religion as there are different types of people.
Some religions and beliefs you may know about, some may seem strange and some you've probably never heard of before. Hopefully the information provided on this page will help some people understand the beliefs of others and clear up misunderstandings that may have gone on for generations. You'll discover that people have more in common than you'd think.
I've written descriptions of some world religions to give a basic definition of some of the belief systems. The following links represent a small fraction of the world's religions, so enter with an open mind and explore.
Someone asked Master Yangqi, "When the founder of Zen came from India to China, he sat facing a wall for nine years-what does this mean?" Yangqi said, "As an Indian, he couldn't speak Chinese."
Descriptions of some World Religions
I wrote some of these papers many years ago in an Intro to Religion class, they were written as summaries of a chapter in "The World's Religions" by Huston Smith. Others were collected from other sources. If something is copywrited please let me know! Many thanks to Dr. Tony D'Souza for putting up with me in his class.
