Program Description
The Program in Religion and Secondary Education is designed for those who wish to pursue a middle or secondary school teaching career in conjunction with their theological studies. The PRSE is offered within the context of either the Master of Theological Studies or the Master of Divinity degree program in partnership with local cooperating schools. In addition to earning their master's degree, PRSE students earn middle or secondary school teacher licensure in Biology, Chemistry, English, Foreign Language (Chinese, French, German, Hebrew, Spanish), History, Latin and the Classical Humanities, and/or Political Science/Political Philosophy from the Massachusetts Department of Education. The license obtained is valid in over forty-five states and represents the closest equivalent available today to a national teaching certificate. In addition to their education toward licensure, students are specifically prepared to teach the study of religion and to develop curriculum resources that incorporate religion and religious worldviews within their field(s) of expertise. They also have the opportunity to engage constitutional and public policy issues that arise when considering the role that religion can and should play in public education. In this regard, the PRSE is a specialized training program in that it provides the explicit opportunity for teachers to explore the ways that the study of religion can contribute to and enhance policy and content discourses across the educational spectrum.

Higher Education in the Gulf
Higher Education in the Gulf will be of value to those in the West and in the Middle East with an interest in the contemporary state of the higher educational system in the region and in comparative education in general. It concentrates on the Gulf, but the problems of control, development, curriculum and purpose in higher education are general throughout the Middle East. Higher Education in the Gulf stresses the need for engagement with the problems of the Gulf States as developing countries and the roles which practical, locally-based research can play in promoting balanced, self-reliant development. For too long work in the West relating to the Gulf has concentrated on oil, military and political issues, and this book looks beyond these to the neglected areas of social, cultural and human capital aspects of modernisation. It is deliberately intended to suggest and promote research.
  • Up to date information derived from field experience
  • Deliberately intended to suggest and promote further research
  • Looks at social and cultural life rather than military and political issues

SOPHIA LYON FAHS: LIBERAL RELIGIOUS EDUCATOR
by Edith Fisher Hunter, Author The life of Sophia Lyon Fahs was a remarkable journey from the heart of evangelical Christian orthodoxy to a leadership role in a revitalized religious liberalism, a revitalization due in large part to her role as an innovative religious educator.
Born in China on August 2, 1876, the child of Presbyterian missionaries, Sophia Lyon graduated from Wooster College in Wooster, Ohio, dedicated to a career in the Student Volunteer Movement for which she had signed a pledge card reading: "It is my purpose in life, if God permit, to become a foreign missionary." The goal of this movement was the "evangelization of the world in this generation," a period roughly between 1880 to 1905. The goal was not realized.
Graduation, 1897, Presbyterian University of Wooster (now the College of Wooster)

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR CHILDREN
I have received a number of letters from parents asking how their children may obtain a "religious education" outside of a church setting. These parents are familiar with trinitarian churches where children are taught that human beings are naturally bad, and all people will be punished by eternal torture in "hell" unless they believe that Jesus died as a sacrifice to appease God's wrath. These parents do not want their children to be taught such irrational and inhumane beliefs. I am writing this essay in response to these parents and others who are interested in religious education for their children. In my view, religious education is too important to turn over to anyone other than parents (or whoever is rearing the child). I am writing this essay from a Christian Deist viewpoint. Let me begin by recognizing that most parents want to help their children grow and develop as healthy and happy individuals. Parents usually know (or can learn) how to meet the physical and intellectual needs of their children. Parents know that a child needs good food, exercise, rest, and medical care to develop a healthy body. Parents know that a child needs education to develop academic knowledge and skills. But parents also know that a child needs some kind of overall view of life that will help the child (now and as an adult) to cope with the questions and experiences that he or she will inevitably face in life. This "overall view of life" may be called a "philosophy of life" or "religion."

The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE), one-year, full-time, Secondary course prepares graduates to teach in secondary schools. This is an interesting, often very demanding but tremendously rewarding age group to work with as pupils mature from early adolescence to adulthood. The course is designed to equip you to teach your main subject and to make an effective contribution to the work of schools beyond your subject. The UEA partnership scheme has attracted national and international attention for its successful close inter-weaving of school and university-based work. It provides you with the opportunity to engage in the systematic study of theory and current good practice both in schools and in the School of Education and Professional Development at UEA. The PGCE course has received a series of excellent grades in OFSTED inspections. The 36 week long course includes an extensive 24 weeks of placement in two of our partnership schools near, or within reasonable distance of, your home. This emphasis on practical teaching provides you with a broad range of teaching experience in different schools.

ABOUT MYSELF
My name is Penny Thompson. I am a researcher, writer and practitioner in the field of Religious Education in the UK. I taught in comprehensive schools in Sefton, Merseyside for 15 years.
Lutterworth Press has recently published my book, 'Whatever Happened to Religious Education?' which charts what has happened to RE in England and Wales since 1961.
On this site you can find articles on RE, news of my book and booklets on RE, debate, practical suggestions for use in the classroom and comment on the RE scene in the UK.
A MAJOR NEW STUDY OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
Whatever Happened to Religious Education?
Penny Thompson tracks the changes in RE in England and Wales since the mid-60s. Far from being inevitable, such changes were conceived and brought about by an elite within the profession and are damaging to proper religious education. RE should generally, in this country, be based on Christianity, taught in an open and self-critical way. The Bishop of St. Albans in his foreword calls it 'feisty, provocative and argued with passion'. Dr. Marius Felderhof gives his opinion here . Hope University College sponsored the launch of the book on October 30th with a champagne reception. Read the speech I gave here You can find a synopsis here . Religious Education
The heart of religious education in our Catholic parishes and schools is the person of Jesus Christ. The fundamental task of religious education is to present Christ and everything we do, learn, and teach in relation to him. The principal sources for religious education are Tradition, Scripture, and the Magisterium. The Church attempts to reach out to all people, responding to the needs, the diverse situations, and the capacity of the recipients. Therefore, the Catholic educational ministry here in the Archdiocese of St. Louis extends to adults, youth, and children. Each parish strives to meet the religious educational needs of all its members by providing programs and services to the extent possible and appropriate. Religious education for children is provided through the Catholic elementary school and/or the parish school of religion. The Archdiocese also provides religious education for teenagers in its twenty-nine high schools, for children and youth with special needs, and for adults through parish and archdiocesan religious education programs.
Directors of Parish Religious Education Programs
Most Catholic parishes appoint a qualified lay person or religious to administer the religious education programs in the parish. This person is called the Director of Religious Education (DRE) if the responsibilities include religious education for different age-levels, such as adult formation, Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA), high-school PSR, elementary PSR, elementary school, sacramental programs, special needs, summer religion program, and Sunday Liturgy-of-the-Word with Children. If the responsibilities are limited to just one level of religious education programming, then the title is Coordinator of Religious Education (CRE).

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION, CATECHESIS, AND FREEDOM
by Kenneth Barker Summary This book deals with the different responses given by religious education leaders to the call to freedom issued by the church and the world. It offers some of the more important historical antecedents of the current religious educational emphasis on freedom, and then delineates the role of freedom as elaborated by several major types of religious education emphases. Spirit of the Book The spirit of the book is, of course, one of freedom-not just in the way it frontally deals with the role of freedom in religious education but also in the way this book empowers religious educators to freely choose any one of several models to teach learners in an environment suffused with Christian freedom. What this Book Gives You This book gives you important insights on the place of freedom in your religious education activities and helpful ways in which you can use freedom to make your educational ministry more human and more authentically religious . It gives you major models of religious education for freedom which have been proposed by religious education experts and church authorities, and shows the implications of these models for day-to-day religious education work for persons of all ages and at all levels.

Whilst I fully endorse the proposition that there is a crying need for impart- ing knowledge of the fundamentals of our religion and its cardinal principles to the new generation, I join issue with the proponents of these ideas on the methods to be adopted for achieving this end. My purpose in writing this article is to sound a note of warning that religious education of the conven- tional type which makes children of 6 to 10 memorise the " Usool-e-Deen " and " Furoo-e-Deen " with the dogmatic comments on them handed down to us from generation to generation, will not in the least serve the purpose we have in view, namely, to prepare our future generations for the onslaught from various quarters on their religious beliefs and practices. When I say this, I am speaking from personal knowledge having attended such a " Maktab " (school) in my childhood where venerable preachers religiously repeated and reiterated all that they were expected to impart to their young pupils and, in fulfilment of what they thought to be part of their duty, made the pupils memorise them, and even chant them with all the zeal and fervour the young souls were capable of. It is said that: " Truth is bitter but its fruit is sweet It may appear to quite a few that I am over-emphasising one particular aspect of the matter and magnifying it manifold, but I honestly believe that, so far, very little has been done to produce the right type of religious teachers who can handle the education of our younger generation and equip them with sound knowledge and beliefs that can withstand attacks of outsiders, and emerge successfully in later life with unflinching faith and unshakeable belief in the righteousness of our creed.

There is currently no national teaching framework for RE Non-religious beliefs should be taught as part of compulsory religious education, a thinktank report suggests.
Atheism, agnosticism and humanism should be taught to encourage students to discuss ethical dilemmas, the Institute of Public Policy Research said. It also suggested "religious education" should be re-named "religious, philosophical and moral education". Religious education is not part of the national curriculum but by law all schools have to provide it. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority, which regulates the curriculum, is currently drawing up a national framework for religious education. The report comes as French politicians voted to ban all obvious religious symbols, including Islamic headscarves, Christian crosses and Jewish skullcaps, from schools. Update The institute, in a report due out on Monday, said students needed to be encouraged to study philosophical and ethical problems and be taught to evaluate evidence and argument.

Pupils' "world views" should be taken into account A national framework for religious education in schools has been set out for the first time.
Pupils aged three to 19 in England will study Christianity at each stage, with other major faiths being looked at, but in less detail. Secular philosophies, such as humanism and atheism, could also be dealt with. The Qualifications and Curriculum Authority said its framework would promote "understanding and respect" and the ability to discuss ethical issues. Currently, RE syllabuses are decided by local authorities. 'Self-worth' By law, all state schools must teach the subject, except to pupils withdrawn from classes by their parents. Last week, the chief inspector of England's schools, David Bell, suggested schools dropped their legal obligation to provide "a daily act of collective worship". He said 76% of secondary schools were breaking the law in not doing this.
