Religious Education
Do you like teaching? Are you excited about your faith and feel the call to share it with others? If so, a number of churches of various denominations in the area are looking for a few good instructors. If you’ve ever been through a religious education program in your own church, you know how important it is to have teachers who can communicate with young people. The religious education coordinator for VISTO can help you find a program that will suit your talents and interests. Whether it’s teaching kids from elementary school to junior high or working with senior high youth groups, the coordinator can help arrange to have you interview with a particular program director in the area in which you’re interested. Programs meet at various days during the week. Possibilities also exist for team teaching.
Expectations:
  • plan to teach one class period per week (volunteers are assisted in making lesson plans by the program director of the parish) attend a VISTO religious education meeting once a semester
Qualifications:
  • a good understanding and knowledge of your faith

Belief, unbelief and religious education Belief, unbelief and religious education by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Monday 8 March 2004 There has been much discussion in recent weeks of the possibility of including in courses of RE in schools some attention to atheism and other non-religious forms of belief. In the light of this, I want to explore not so much the issue of relations between faiths as the challenge that all faiths have in common - how we manage the tensions between belief and unbelief in our public life and policy, and specially in education. I shall be looking in what follows at some of the assumptions that have been around on both sides of the recent discussion, in the hope of restoring clarity to what threatens to become a somewhat confused and overclouded landscape. And I hope too to shed some light on broader questions about belief and unbelief as they affect all our religious traditions, in a way that may open up some fresh conversations between us. In the year 156 of the Christian era, Polycarp, Bishop of Smyrna, was arrested and brought before the magistrate, charged with being a Christian. He was in his eighties, and his age and frailty prompted the magistrate to offer him a quick discharge if he would acknowledge the divine spirit of the emperor and say 'Away with the atheists.' The latter, at least, you might think would not be difficult for a bishop; but of course at this period an atheist was someone who refused to take part in the civic cult of the empire, to perform public religious duties and take part in the festivals of the Roman city. Christians were atheists, by this definition; Polycarp had a problem after all. His response, though, was an elegant turning of the tables. He looked around slowly at the screaming mob in the amphitheatre who had gathered for the gladiatorial fights and public executions, and, says our eyewitness chronicler, he groaned and said, 'Away with the atheists.'

Anyone with a university degree in appropriate subjects can apply for the one-year Postgraduate Certificate course in Primary Education (PGCE) where they will follow a intensive course which will also lead to the Certificate in Religious Education.
Secondary Teaching
Graduates with degrees in appropriate subjects usually complete a one-year Postgraduate Certificate course in Secondary Education (PGCE) where they will follow a intensive course which will also lead to the Certificate in Religious Education.

Schools, other than voluntary aided schools and those of a religious character, must teach religious education according to the locally agreed syllabus. Each agreed syllabus should reflect the fact that the religious traditions in Great Britain are in the main Christian, while taking account of the teachings and practices of the other principal religions represented in Great Britain. Religious education makes a distinctive contribution to the school curriculum by developing pupils' knowledge and understanding of religion, religious beliefs, practices, language and traditions and their influence on individuals, communities, societies and cultures. It enables pupils to consider and respond to a range of important questions related to their own spiritual development, the development of values and attitudes and fundamental questions concerning the meaning and purpose of life.

Ranier Maria Rilke
From The Book of Hours: Love Poems to God
"I want to unfold," exclaims Rilke, and so, too, do the throngs of people coming to Unitarian Universalist congregations seeking spiritual growth and meaning in their lives. "Unfolding" is an apt metaphor for this growth. Ever since the time of William Ellery Channing, the founder of American Unitarianism, our tradition has held that within each person there is a "divine seed" that can be cultivated such that each grows "unfolds" toward the Holy. This is the lifelong process that today we call religious education.

Education: Teach your children ‘how to pray – not what to say’

By Marilyn Kerjean
Adults can underestimate children’s natural propensity to pray, and should be teaching them ‘how’ to pray, not merely ‘what’ to say, says author and lecturer, Sr Margaret Smith SGS (pictured). “I grew up in an era when at school we just ‘said’ prayers. Every morning we rattled them off. It didn’t bear any relationship to our lives, or the Church year or what was going on in the world around us. I’m not criticising where we came from, but I don’t think it works today. “Children have an imagination, a creativity and playfulness (such that) they see … interpret and understand things that might just pass us as adults.” This is what religious education must tap into in forming children’s prayer life, Sr Margaret says. “Religious education should form in children attitudes to life and living. There is a need for content, but I don’t think that content can stop at just facts,” she says. “Somehow those facts have to have an impact on how they live.” Sr Margaret, a Good Samaritan sister, has just published Daily Prayer Under the Southern Cross, a prayer book adapted from the American Children’s Daily Prayer 2000–2001.

Henry Adams once said, "A teacher affects eternity." Teachers in private schools profoundly appreciate the eternal dimensions of their work, for they nourish not only the minds but also the hearts and souls of their students. Serving in schools that emphasize a child's complete development, private school teachers have the privileged opportunity to transmit the core academic skills as well as the lessons that count most in life: lessons about spirituality, love, values, the wonder of creation, the purpose of existence. Can any work be more important? Indeed, the work of the private school teacher is of such significance, it is often regarded as a ministry and a calling, rather than just a job. Patty Quinn, a teacher at a private school in Maryland, described it this way: "I look at this job as a vocation, not as a career. I really think that the work that I'm doing has eternal consequences." ( Education Week , March 29, 2000) Private schools are wonderful places in which to teach. They offer caring, orderly, safe, and nurturing environments; they emphasize the education of the whole child; they insist on academic excellence; and they treat teachers as professionals, giving them considerable autonomy and independence in matters of instruction. The disciplined environment, rigorous curriculum, caring communities, and high expectations private schools provide make them some of the most effective schools in the country. Teachers in private schools can spend their time doing what they are supposed to be doing: teaching.

General Information
The course of study aims at educating qualified experts, male and female, for theological and pedagogical responsibilities of the Church within schools and parishes.
If passed successfully, the final examination: Dipl. Rel. Päd. FH diploma in religious pedagogy (university for applied science) ] will enable its bearer the access to the profession of a teacher of religious education and/or to the profession of a parish expert worker (Gemeindereferent / Gemeinderefrentin) . Qualified religious pedagogues will be able to work as full-time teachers of religious education at German elementary or secondary schools, at special schools, possibly even at vocational schools or training colleges. Concept of Education and Subjects of Study The concept of education puts the stress on the close link of scientific-theological, religious and pedagogical, pastoral and practical as well as human-scientific recognition and experience. For this reason, the course of study comprises a wide-ranging variety of subjects:
  • the traditional scientific-theological subjects (e.g., exegesis of the Old and New Testament, dogmatics, moral theology, fundamental theology, church history, philosophy including history of philosophy);
