As Holocaust Remembrance Day is observed April 19, the museums are intensifying outreach to non-Jewish audiences as they urge people to confront evil. The museums include the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum on the Washington, D.C., mall, which is celebrating its tenth year of expanding programs and tough-to-get free tickets. Its programs now include training law enforcement officers, U.S. military academy students, and teachers and students from across the country.

CONTEST WINNERS EVENTS AND CONTESTS VIDEO AND AUDIO SEPTEMBER 9, 2002 CULTURE As Jews celebrate their High Holy Days through Sept. 16, they can also celebrate a renaissance among Jewish museums. At a time when many cultural institutions are facing shrinking budgets and dwindling donations, Jewish museums seem to be thriving. In New York, the Museum of Jewish Heritage is adding a new $60 million wing blocks from the destruction of Ground Zero. Two healthy California Jewish museums are merging to share a showplace space in downtown San Francisco. And a $10 million Jewish museum is planned for Cleveland, Ohio. Jewish museums range from stately institutions to collections in the corners of synagogues and Jewish community centers. "The interest in American Jewish history has been rising astronomically," says Ellen Smith, a consultant to many Jewish museums nationally. "Museums have emerged as one of the most able educators for people of all ages, economic and social backgrounds to learn about Jews as a people and Jews as holders of the faith." When the Council of American Jewish Museums was founded in 1977, it had just seven member institutions. Now there are more than 80.

Fr. Bucko first became interested in computers while doing fieldwork on Pine Ridge. His close associate, Fr. David Shields, S. J. was gifted with a computer complete with a modem. The two of them ran up one of the most remarkable phone bills in South Dakota history trying out this new device. They eventually opened their own computer bulletin board, "Opus Pocus", to both be of service to the people on Pine Ridge who had computer connections and also to cut down their own phone bill. Fr. Bucko took a job at Le Moyne College where he opened another bulletin board, The Erie Canal, this time to be of service to people with HIV - AIDS. He worked with Sr. Mary of

Main Museums in Baku Azerb.com In the years following independence, a lot of attention has been poured on the museums by the government, mainly as a way of weaving and reinforcing national identity. Museums serving the Soviet ideology are now themselves part of history. E.g. the Lenin museum now houses the magnificent collection of the Museum of Carpet-Making and Folk Crafts, previously located at the Djuma Mosque in the Old Town. Sign of the times! Azerbaijan also has a tradition of "house museum", the former houses of the famous and powerful now open to the occasional visitor and mainly of interest to the researcher with a specific interest. Some house museums host interesting event but most tend to be rather dull and repetitive, on the other hand most are free.

    Icons: Art or Religious Artifact?
In Russia, faith has returned but property has not
    By DARREN FOSTER
    Posted Friday, April 26, 2002; 10:00 a.m. EST
Dressed in a black cassock, the Reverend Boris Mikhailov appeared out of a shadowy corner of Moscow's St. John the Baptist Russian Orthodox Church. Wading through a smoky trail of incense, he walked past the congregation of mostly kerchiefed women who were attending a Lenten service at the side chapel. He paused just before the altar and scanned the clutter of gilded icons that hung on the walls of the 18th Century church. "The Christ in the iconostasis, 17th Century," he began, excitedly pointing to some of the church's more venerated icons. "Holy Mary with child Christ, end of the 17th Century. Holy Mary with whole family, a copy of Raphael's." An art historian by training, Mikhailov became a priest in 1991, at the age of 50. His spiritual journey parallels the expansion of religious freedoms initiated during Gorbachev's perestroika that began in the mid-1980s. And in many ways he personifies the debate that remains one of the last vestiges of communism in the relationship between church and state. The debate, in which Mikhailov is a leading voice, involves a confrontation between the church and the state over the ownership and stewardship of churches and icons. And it illustrates Russia's struggle to reconcile the 70-year history of communist reign with the country's thousand-year-old tradition of Russian Orthodoxy.

William Foxwell Albright to John C. Trevor (March 1948)
[assessing Trevor's photos of the scroll of Isaiah from cave 1 at Qumran] "Unless drastic measures are taken at once,
the greatest and most valuable of all Hebrew and Aramaic manuscript discoveries
is likely to become the academic scandal par excellence of the twentieth century."
Geza Vermes, The Dead Sea Scrolls: Qumran in Perspective (Fortress, 1981), p. 24. The term "Dead Sea Scrolls" has become the standard designation for fragmentary mss. discovered in limestone caves carved out of cliffs along the wadis that descend through the Judean wilderness to the left bank of the Dead Sea. From David (10th c. BCE) to the bar Kochba revolt (135 CE), Jewish fugitives often found shelter in caves in this area. But except for a few scrolls found "near Jericho" in the 8th c. CE, public attention to texts discovered in the Judean wilderness is a phenomenon of the past half century. Manuscripts found in eleven caves within a few miles of ancient ruins on a plateau overlooking the mouth of wadi Qumran have become the primary focus of an intense international scholarly debate related to the history of Judaism & the origins of Christianity. The main issues in this debate are:
