Bibliography on Women and Religion
Susan C. Lau, North Huntingdon, PA
A B C D ... Z This version of the bibliography is arranged alphabetically by author's last name. After each bibliographical description there is an id number associated with the entry and a list of key words. You can search an index that includes all of the words in all of the alphabetical files by typing key words, dates, id numbers, authors' names, or words from titles here.
If you have a DOS or Windows computer, you can download the latest version of this bibliography, and DOS software to read and search it. Download women-rl.exe (roughly one megabyte). Create a directory for the bibliography, move women-rl.exe into that directory, and at the DOS prompt change to that directory and type women-rl . Once the files have been unpacked, you can delete women-rl.exe and type papr to run the program that can search and display the bibliography. If you prefer, you can download women-rl.zip (roughly one megabyte) and use your own unzip program to unpack the compressed data from the zip file. Biography: Susan Walter Lau, the compiler of this bibliography, has her Ph.D. in Religious Studies from the University of Pittsburgh. She teaches in the Religious Studies Department at the University and has also taught at the Greensburg Regional Campus of Pitt, Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and West Virginia University. Religion Can Also Be Funny
Three ministers were out on a lake fishing one fine afternoon. A Protestant minister, an Episcopalian priest and a Catholic priest. They were sitting out in the middle of the lake and the Protestant minister said he had to relieve himself, so he got out of the boat and walked across the water to shore, relieved himself behind a tree. Then walked back to the boat. The Episcopalian priest did the same thing. The Catholic priest thought to himself, if they can do it, so can I. So he stepped out of the boat and promptly sank to the bottom. The other two looked at each other and one said "Do you think we should have told him about the rocks just under the water?"

A Checklist of Resources for Gay Men, Lesbians, and Bisexuals
This selective book list indicates the large number and wide range of published viewpoints available to lesbians and gay men interested in exploring their lives as spiritual journeys. Following the book list is a directory of religious organizations for gays and lesbians in the United States and the publications they produce, listings for several additional organizations and independently-published newsletters and journals devoted to exploring gay or lesbian spirituality, and a list of relevant Internet sites. Specifically excluded from the list of published resources are: novels and poetry; items written in languages other than English; brochures, study guides, and tracts; articles in periodicals; chapters of books; books exclusively addressing the spiritual dimensions of the AIDS epidemic or the experience of living with AIDS; doctrinal statements and position papers about gays and lesbians adopted by religious institutions; and blatantly homophobic treatments of the subject. Some of the books listed were produced by publishers affiliated with religious institutions, and many of the titles listed were not written by lesbians or gay men. Book titles are arranged alphabetically by title within the categories listed below. With a few exceptions, titles are listed in only one of the categories. Because not every title was examined, some titles may be inappropriately categorized, or could be categorized differently. A title/category index follows the book lists.

The role of spiritual consciousness in the development of social morality.

The Urantia Book
Paper 101: The Real Nature of Religion; Section 9
Religion and Morality
No professed revelation of religion could be regarded as authentic if it failed to recognize the duty demands of ethical obligation which had been created and fostered by preceding evolutionary religion. Revelation unfailingly enlarges the ethical horizon of evolved religion while it simultaneously and unfailingly expands the moral obligations of all prior revelations. When you presume to sit in critical judgment on the primitive religion of man (or on the religion of primitive man), you should remember to judge such savages and to evaluate their religious experience in accordance with their enlightenment and status of conscience. Do not make the mistake of judging another's religion by your own standards of knowledge and truth. True religion is that sublime and profound conviction within the soul which compellingly admonishes man that it would be wrong for him not to believe in those morontial realities which constitute his highest ethical and moral concepts, his highest interpretation of life's greatest values and the universe's deepest realities. And such a religion is simply the experience of yielding intellectual loyalty to the highest dictates of spiritual consciousness. The search for beauty is a part of religion only in so far as it is ethical and to the extent that it enriches the concept of the moral. Art is only religious when it becomes diffused with purpose which has been derived from high spiritual motivation.

137. African Religion
Although there are cultural variations in belief among Africans, author Kwabena Dei OforiAttah believes they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious character.
http://www2.ncsu.edu/ncsu/aern/afridan.html
African Traditional Religion: Triumphs of Rituals
Introduction by Kwabena Dei Ofori-Attah The bedrock of African traditional religion is faith; faith based upon dogmatism. It is that kind of faith that does not call for any hard evidence. Again, it is that kind of faith that does not engage in metaphysics. It is simply "what was will be." In most cases, perception, intuition or the presence of a perplexing event can have a compelling effect on the belief system. Nothing is taken for granted when it comes to traditional religion. An individual may challenge the gods at his or her own risk. This does not in any way mean that all Africans have a common traditional religious practice. There are variations but they are not strong enough to blur the common strands that give Africa its distinctive religious practices. African spirits draw their strength, inspiration and wisdom from God. In African traditional Religion, God is seen as the author of life, the maker of everything. African traditional religion belief does not offer any other version of the creation. It is simply the work of God, the omnipotent, the everlasting, ever faithful, and merciful Father of all. Symbols figure prominently in the African society. These are transferred into the religious realm to establish a strong link between the unseen "spirits" and the living. It is common to see some of these symbols on the walls of the shrines or in the clothes worn by the traditional priests and other people who wish to express their mood through any of these symbols.

138. Viking Religion
A text about the original viking religion and how it relates to asatru today.
http://www.ragweedforge.com/vikrel.html
The Heathen Viking Religion
The Heathen Vikings didn't worship in the same sense as Christians.
They respected their Gods and honored them. Perhaps they made sacrifice to give thanks or ask favor in times of danger. The Gods were more powerful then men. But they were not all-powerful, or all-knowing, or entirely good. Like men, they ate, fought, played jokes, were deceived on occasion, and eventually would die. They were themselves bound by their fates, and doomed to die at the end of the world. After which, they and the world, are to be reborn and the cycle continued. While we do know something of the general beliefs, we know little of the details of practice. Most of what we know comes from an Icelandic Poet named Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241) who recorded many of the myths and histories of the time. However, he wrote two hundred years after Iceland became Christian, and says little about actual practice. This has caused problems for those individuals and groups who wish to return to the old time Nordic religion. These folks, often called "Asatru", study as much as is known of the old religion, and then build from there to fill in the gaps. Some have deliberately added new elements to adapt to modern times. As a result, there are a lot of differences among them. These differences are compounded by the fact that there is no central authority or official dogma. This is as it was in Viking times as well.

A survey of the religions in Japan.
http://asnic.utexas.edu/asnic/countries/japan/japreligion.html
Religion in Japan "Freedom of religion is guaranteed to all. No religious organization shall receive any privileges from the State, nor exercise any political authority .." (Article 20 of the Constitution). AU religious organizations in Japan today enjoy complete freedom in the exercise of their beliefs. Religions in japan are classified into Shinto, Buddhism, Christianity, and miscellaneous religions. Shinto is essentially indigenous, but has been heavily influenced by Buddhist ideas and practices. Buddhism and Christianity were both introduced from abroad, but the degree to which they have become indigenous to Japan differs substantially. Miscellaneous religions are mostly the so-called New Religions. Confucianism, while introduced somewhat earlier than Buddhism, has functioned primarily in the sphere of moral precepts rather than as an organized religion. Figures on religious organizations and their leadership and membership in 1985 as reported by religious organizations to the Agency for Cultural Affairs are as follows: Shinto Buddhism Christianity miscellaneous Religions Members 1 15,602,000 92.065,000 1.688,000 14,444,000
