Religion in Norway
Norway has an official Protestant State Church based on the Evangelical-Lutheran religion. Although there is no separation of Church and State, all inhabitants have the right to exercise their religion freely in accordance with a 1964 amendment to the Constitution. Nine out of ten ethnic Norwegians are members of the State Church of Norway. Norwegian religious expression is largely private; whereas most individuals state that religion is important to them, this is not generally expressed through active religious participation in organized communities. While roughly 88% of the population belong to the Church of Norway, only 10% attend church services or other Christianity-related meetings more than once a month. Some 5.9% of the population are members of other religious communities, while 6.2% do not belong to any religious community at all. The largest religious and life-stance communities outside the Church of Norway are the Humanist Movement, represented by the Norwegian Humanist Association (63 000), Islam (60 000), the Pentecostal Movement (45 000), the Roman Catholic Church (40 000 or more), the Evangelical-Lutheran free church (20 000), Methodists (13 000) and several lesser free churches. The conversion of Norway to Christianity started in around 1000 and was a result of contact with Christian Europe through a combination of trade ties and Viking raids. Missionary activities conducted by the Anglo-Saxon church as well as from Germany and Denmark also helped Christianity to gain prominence over the gods of traditional Norse mythology and S¡mi nature worship.

Unlike our modern religions, ancient Egyptian religion was not based on a set of theological principles, nor did it really depend on the content of canonical writings. Rather, it evolved around how people interacted with their gods, and these actions are termed by Egyptologists as "cult", which is roughly synonymous with "ritual". In the ancient Egyptian language, there is no specific word for "ritual". They variously referred to these interactions with the gods as irt ht (doing things), irw (things done) or nt (regular procedures). Cults were focused on ntr, which since the Ptolemaic (Greek) period has been translated as god. However, the ancient Egyptians applied this term to people and things which we today would hesitate to call gods. The Ancient Ankh, Symbol of Life

The Sociology of Religion
Durkheim's earlier concern with social regulation was in the main focused on the more external forces of control, more particularly legal regulations that can be studied, so he argued, in the law books and without regard to individuals. Later he was led to consider forces of control that were internalized in individual consciousness. Being convinced that "society has to be present within the individual," Durkheim, following the logic of his own theory, was led to the study of religion, one of the forces that created within individuals a sense of moral obligation to adhere to society's demands. Durkheim had yet another motive for studying the functions of religionnamely, concern with mechanisms that might serve to shore up a threatened social order. In this respect he was in quest of what would today be described as functional equivalents for religion in a fundamentally a-religious age. par excellence , inspiring communal devotion to ethical ends that transcended individual purposes. But if the reign of traditional religious orientations had now ended, what would take their place? Would the end of traditional religion be a prelude to the dissolution of all moral community into a state of universal breakdown and anomie? Such questions intensified Durkheim's concern with the sociology of religion, adding to the intrinsic interest he had in terms of the internal logic of his system. Basic to his theory is the stress on religious phenomena as communal rather than individual. "A religion is a unified system of beliefs and practices relative to sacred things, that is to say, things set apart and forbiddenbeliefs and practices which unite in one single moral community called a Church, all those who adhere to them."

This section contains verious small writings, essays, and theses, on various aspects of belief. These are all written by a small number of authors, namely A. Victor Garaffa, Bob X, Sean Stubblefield, and brian. And at the heart of them is a common and essential foundationist notion - that of questioning Some people fear that to question leads to loss of perceptive, when only the reverse can be true. The more we question, the more we think - and thus with every such step we come a little closer to understanding our place in reality. Please note that none of these articles are officially endorsed as either required reading, a canon of sorts, or else even correct and true in terms of any possible manifestation of "Objective Truth". The road to dogmatism is one that takes away our freedom of thought. They are simply writings intended to stimulate thinking, offered by personal friends or myself, for the purposes of intellectual provocation, consideration, dicussion - or even criticism, should you wish. All comments are welcome, and are invited in the forum.

A. Victor Garaffa Saul of Tarsus, better known as Saint Paul, has sometimes been a controversial figure in Christianity. The Gospels by themselves would feature as important wisdom literature, but Paul's Epistles demonstrate the building of the real theology of Christianity. Although some dislike the apparent cultural inflections in the Epistles, without the theology of Saul of Tarsus there is no Christian Doctrine. In this in-depth scholarly thesis by victor, he systematically analyses the letters of Saul - to set up his ultimate prosecution, and the accusation that Saul of Tarsus did not simply usurp the embryonic Jersusalem Church under Jesus's brother James, but that he also corrupted the entire original message of Christianity as it was then into somethnig utterly alien. In all honesty I can say that I have searched for rebukes against the criticisms against Saul of Tarsus, all of which Victor has developed, and more - but never have I found anything that even begins to present itself as a coherent defence. Ultimately the acceptance of Saul of Tarsus remains a matter of faith. However, should anyone take it upon themselves to ever write-up a proper defence, addressing all objections in detail, then I would be very happy to post it up here in the general articles section of comparative-religion.com, to serve as a balanced argument.

Contrast with theism and supernaturalism in general, which hold that the material entities are not autonomous, but governed by an external agency outside nature. Metaphysical naturalism is one basis for rejecting the idea of a personal deity as described in various scriptures, and assuming the investigation of nature alone, and mistrusting “revelation”, as the key to understanding the whole affair. Introductory thoughts:
What is religion? There are many definitions for the term "religion" in common usage. On this web site, we define it very broadly, in order to include the greatest number of belief systems: "Religion is any specific system of belief about deity, often involving rituals, a code of ethics, and a philosophy of life." Thus we include here all of the great monotheistic religions, Eastern religions; Neopagan religions; a wide range of other faith groups, spiritual paths, and ethical systems; and beliefs about the existence of God(s) and Goddess(es). We recognize that most people define " religion " in a much more exclusive manner. Christianity There are many definitions for this term as well . Again, we use an inclusive definition: " An individual or group is Christian if they sincerely, thoughtfully and devoutly believe that they are Christian ." This generates a lot of angry Emails from some visitors to this site who are insistent on excluding some denominations as sub-Christian, quasi-Christian or non-Christian.
