Cycling today: a rage, a fashion, a religion
printer friendly version By Jennifer Bixler / Town Crier Staff Writer Cycling has generated renewed interest all over the nation with the development of rave new colors, the mountain bike and the return of the tandem. The hot colors for this year are blues, greens and purples, a change from the neons in the past, said Jim Lester III, an employee at the Bicycle Outfitter, in Los Altos. Some bicycles have a touch of all three colors with a gradual look from purple, to blue, to green. Wild prints of Pearl Izumi clothing, made from Ultrasensor fabric not only add favor to the style of today's bicyclers, but keeps them cool. Looney Tunes to samurai prints have found their way into bicycling stores, said Marilyn Powell, of the Bicycle Outfitter. "The brightness of the clothes is to be visible, fabrics are designed to block wind and moisture," said Dick Powell, owner of the Bicycle Outfitter.

Levi's execs are scratching their heads while they try to convince 15- to 24-year-olds that Levi's jeans are still cool. The problem is marketing. "There is no buzz for Levi's anymore," said marketing consultant Irma Zandl. "They missed the beat over and over, and kids have just moved on." But Levi's have fallen off the map. Since the 1960s marketers have tried to harness everything countercultural and subversive to move product. This so-called "conquest of cool" (see WORLD, Nov. 28, 1998) means that the money teens spend in malls doesn't just buy clothes, but also registers as dollar votes for various marketing strategies.

Across the Islamic world, fashion aficionados are finding ways to meld religious morality with a modern style that expresses their individuality and are living this traditional look behind. ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) Two young women stroll arm-in-arm along the Bosporus waterway that separates Asia from Europe. Head scarves signal their Muslim faith, but short-sleeved blouses and leg-revealing dress slits show a greater allegiance to Western fashion.

This may seem out of place on our page, but we are scarf fans so scarf fashion is a natural interest. There is a lot written and said about wearing scarves. All of it good stuff...only they often fail to mention one aspect of scarf fashion.
This page focuses on a lost art...wearing headscarves...what today is sometimes called head wraps. Back in the 1950's, 60's, and early 70's, wearing headscarves was fashionable...even with teenage girls. So what happened? Three turns of fate...
First, the Catholic Church stopped requiring that women cover their heads in church. Second, the carmakers stopped making convertibles (they make them again, but the damage is done). Finally (and worst of all), the Iranian takeover of the US Embassy in 1979. Headscarves were linked with religion again, but this time (in what Western countries perceived) in a negative way. Of course, there were changes in hairstyles and other factors, but these were the big three...particularly the last. Of course, the September 11th attack and the war with Iraq has once again provided an unfair negative focus on headscarves.
From time-to-time fashion designers try to bring headscarves back. But we now have a generation of women that have grown up without them. Besides, now we have the "baseball" cap...no need to tie it. They are cheap and they can look cute on a woman...some of the time. But caps don't have the feminine flare of of a well-tied headscarf.

The Fashion Of The Priced II
This must be my day for movies. A while back, I caused a bit of an uproar on The Left Coaster for taking Mel Gibson to task over his 'religious' film, The Passion of the Christ , which I opined represents a lack of practice by Christian religions of the teachings of the man portrayed and flayed in this movie in favor of pre-Christ philosophy. I could only speak against it then on what I consider to be my religious and philosophical grounds, for I had (and have) no intention of ever seeing this 'movie'. San Francisco Chronicle columnist Mark Morford did go see it, and his comments confirmed essentially what I feared Gibson's efforts represented. How To Gag On 'The Passion' Nine fun-filled ways Mel Gibson's brutal snuff film makes a mockery of true belief. Clip n' save! Perhaps you, like so many across the planet, are more than a bit baffled by the runaway success of The Passion of the Christ. Perhaps you, furthermore, are more than slightly disturbed that millions have flocked to this bizarre ultraviolent blood-drenched revisionist flick and that so many actually believe its story to be absolutely true, and that it just surpassed The Return of the King in total box office and is the No. 8 most successful film of all time and it was No. 1 again across BushCo's flyover states during Easter weekend and has sold 650,000 books and 125,000 creepy pewter nail necklaces and you find it all just incredibly warped and disheartening and what the hell is the world coming to.

Lilly Amina Aly Referring to the news item "Fashion shows get PMs’ wrath" published in The News on November 12, 2003, I would certainly agree that to keep the sanctity of religious months and days in our Islamic calendar such activities shall not be allowed , but to completely ban this would not serve any purpose. There are 12 months in a year and all days and months are not considered religious, and fashion and fashion presentations are just a form of art. In any progressive and developing nation in this modern day and age, fashion has become an industry and people are getting more and more involved in it! In Pakistan too, over the years we have seen a mushroom growth of fashion institutions and schools, which produce more people involved in the industry. Young and enterprising people are coming up with fresh ideas and innovative fashion designs; we can’t let so many young people suffer just because of ‘a bad timing of one show’! I would request the competent authority to kindly think what would happen to all the designers, choreographers, sound and light teams, stage setups and so many people involved in holding such events. Are Turkey, Egypt, Malaysia or Morocco not Islamic countries?

    February 16, 2002
‘ALLAHU AKBAR [God is Great], Allahuakbar!” called Muhammad Hannini as about 15 worshipers gathered Sunday in a mosque in the basement of a home in Richmond Hill, Queens. Instantly, they knelt and touched their heads to the floor, a gesture symbolizing submission to God in Islaam.
The eight women bent in prayer a few feet behind the men were dressed in scarves and long dresses or ankle-length skirts. "You should see my humanity, my compassion, my devotion to God coming through the surface, not my body,” said Sunni Rumsey Amatullah, who became Muslim a quarter century ago.
The women say they consider the veil and modest dress symbols not of oppression but of liberation. They say the emphasis on the female body in the Western world, with all its manifestations in popular culture, has led to the sexual objectification of women. And, despite their own often problematic relationships with men, they say their religion treats each gender equally, though not identically.
Like Amatullah who was born Cheryl Rumsey in Jamaica, Queens, and raised Episcopalian these women are among the estimated 20,000 Americans a year who since the mid-'90s have adopted Islaam, a religion that has been receiving much attention since the Sept.11 terrorist attacks.

Terrorism (Al-Irhaab): the fashion of the 21st Century
A similar picture adorns this article at the Al-Muhajiroun site This article from the jihadist website Al-Muhajiroun sets forth Islamic theological justifications for terrorism, including the use of weapons of mass destruction against the infidels. Note the Qur'anic verse about "striking terror" into infidel hearts, and the mixture of theological points with political ones. For example, the author lists as examples of unbelief both "saying that Allaah has a son," i.e., like Christianity, and "arbitrating to the United Nations." Thanks to William Webb , who comments: "Here's an article for all those supposedly non-partisan members of the 9/11 commission and all the brain-dead politicians in Washington who can't seem to comprehend that we are facing a religious war." Allaah (swt) says in the Qur’aan: “We shall strike terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve (kuffaar – Jews, Christians, Mushriks, apostates etc.), because they joined others in worship with Allaah.” (EMQ Aali-‘Imraan, 3: 151) In this verse, Allaah (swt) clearly informs us that he will terrorise and strike terror into the hearts of the disbelievers i.e. the non-Muslims, due to the shirk they commit – associating partners with him. A form of shirk (associating rivals with Allaah) is to vote for man-made law, legislate kufr (non-Islamic) constitutions, saying that Allaah has a son, arbitrating to the United Nations etc. Therefore, it is inevitable for the non-Muslims to live in fear and tremor, as they associate with Allaah false gods that cannot benefit them or prevent harm from reaching them. They worship their desires, the law of the land, idols, priests, rabbis etc. And due to this great crime, Allaah (swt) vows to terrorise them.
