The Latest Fashion in Irrationality
When the inner child finds a guardian angel,
publishers are in heaven

by Wendy Kaminer

F INALLY, after nearly ten years of getting in touch with their inner children and recovering from abuse, millions of consumers of personal-development ideas have found the perfect parents. Guardian angels watch over all of us, best-selling books about angels proclaim. Like Superman, they swoop down and save us from sudden deathlifting us out of the way of oncoming cars or catching us when we fall off cliffs. Like Mr. Chips, they nurture and inspire us: "We were given an angel to help us in the creation and writing of this book," Alma Daniel, Timothy Wyllie, and Andrew Ramer, the authors of Ask Your Angels , confide, describing angels as the "social workers of the universe." They give us unsolicited, unconditional love. Descending from heaven, or wherever, not bound by the mere material world, angels also give us proof of immortality and the comforting belief that there is no death, only some sort of energy transformation, which is confirmed by other best-selling spirituality books. The Celestine Prophecy , by James Redfield , assures us that what we imagine as death is a happy transition to a higher spiritual plane: a new Eden awaits us in the next millennium. Books about near-death experiences describe the brief sojourns in heaven of people who died but were sent back to earth by God, or God's minions, to complete their missions or simply to spread the word: there is no death. Books about reincarnation promise us many lives before we achieve spiritual perfection and ascend in the end towhatever. For Americans who are depressed about the future of this material world and anxious about violent crime, income inequality, inadequate health care, war, global warming, or the decline of the nuclear family, there is incredibly good news about the cosmos.

Another part of young people are attracted to religion by curiosity or fashion. But nevertheless Belarus is now experiencing a clear religious growth. Today.

Religion in Belarus
Paganism
Before 990 A.D. Belarusians - a mix of several Eastern Slavic tribes (mostly Kryvichi and their branches) and several Baltic tribes (Yatviangians, Litts, Latts) - were pagans in their beliefs. As the Slavs have arrived from South to the lands of today's Belarus they have encountered and absorbed the cultures and beliefs of Baltic and other peoples inhabiting the land. There was already a rich Pagan heritage which reveals today through ancient names. Neman (Nioman, Niamunas) - one of the main rivers of the area is bearing the name of Celtic Goddess of War - Neman. Kupala - an ancient Goddess of Water. One of the mysterious peoples completely assimilated by us was Yatviangians . Ancient Belarusians believed in God of Sun - Yaryla, celebrated seasons of nature very much similar to druidic calendar. The cycles of folk songs that were sang at these celebrations still exist. The main pagan festivities are:
Spring Greeting - a plentitude of spring greeting songs -"Vesnavyya pesni" exists, including "Yur'ya"

FUBU founders turned $500
into fashion empire
By Artellia Burch
artellia.burch@thecharlottepost.com

Carl Brown, co-founder of FUBU, an internationally known clothing line, will be in Charlotte to give a lecture Jan. 22 at the Charlotte Chamber on "Today's Entrepreneur: "Essential Strategies for Survival" at the Belk Action center at 6:30 pm. (Above) Founders of FUBU, a multi-million dollar fashion empire. Carl Brown, (2nd from right) will speak in Charlotte next week. Brown and his partners started FUBU in 1992 with $500. Since the company's inception it has grown from $30,000 to $350 million a year in sales, and Brown wants to share his business knowledge with others. It only takes a dollar and a dream to be an entrepreneur. But it takes more than that to be a successful entrepreneur. "In order to be a successful entrepreneur a person must have an imagination and a drive," he said. "You are going to face difficulties. But from the day we started our business there was some form of success. Our accomplishments kept us going." In every business there are a number of trends that appear. According to Brown a businessperson must stay true to their own vision and not be easily moved by new trends. "As an entrepreneur you have to be aware that you're the leader," he said. "You have to put people around you that believe in your dream. Believe and you have to believe in yourself. Everybody isn't going to see what you see. You have to know that. Some people will tell you that certain things will not work."

My mother has instilled all the great religious values in me. I can recite every shloka On matters of faith and spiritual growth, discipline holds an important place and this thought has influenced the larger part of my family. Fashion is very commercial while spirituality is totally aesthetic. But somewhere I have tried to strike a balance between the two.

    VOL.21 NO.37 COLUMNS : AFTER A FASHION
    After a Fashion
    BY STEPHEN MACMILLAN MOSER
    May 17, 2002: ALLEY-CATTING
The monthly First Thursdays on the chic SoCo strip are so fun I sometimes don't even make it past the first couple of blocks. A handful of stores and salons on the north end of the strip kept me so entertained that I never left. I did buy a beautiful silver ring at the Turquoise Door , and ogled a bracelet that I must own, but this night something unusual occurred. You see, I'm not very spiritual. I don't go to church or follow any variety of mysticism or religion ... except fashion. I do subscribe to one tenet, however, that if it's not pretty, I don't want to see it. I'm self-admittedly deeply superficial one of those fashionistas about whom they say, "What do you get when you scratch the surface? More surface." So it was with a great deal of insouciance that I sashayed myself right into the chair of Lois. The sign on the table said " Intuitive Readings by Lois concise, compassionate communication about your past, present, and future, by appointment only 445-0627." I plunked down 10 bucks for 10 minutes and, like Faye Dunaway as Joan Crawford in Mommie Dearest , I whirled around in my chair and said, "Let's go." Lois had me draw four cards, and in the blink of an eye (several blinks, actually) she had read my beads up and down. She ticked off an astoundingly specific list of major factors in my life, and was blunt about my role in them. I won't divulge the content, but needless to say, I give Lois major marks for accuracy. Immediately after, I was kidnapped by my NBFs

    Religionsvidenskabens kopernikanske vending?
Pascal Boyer. Religion explained - The human instincts that fashion gods, spirits and ancestors William Heinemann, London, 2001, 430 sider.

    Call for Papers
The call for papers has now closed. We are not able to accept late papers as the program has been finalised. Online Conference registration and payment is now available. Payments for the conference can now be processed by clicking on the registration page Various possibilities for publication are being explored. To be considered for publication, papers need to be expandable to essay length of no more than 5000 words. It is hoped that several different publishing outcomes will result, from themed journal editions to selected essays collected around a particular concern.
    Overview
    Papers
We welcome papers that address issues outlined above. But we are especially interested in attracting as wide a range of topics, dealing with fashion and dress, as possible. This will allow us to spread out debate across all facets and aspects of contemporary fashion, dress and consumption. We are also happy to consider offers to organise panels of papers around a single topic. We hope to place some emphasis on:
    • Fashion, gender and urban life
