Rehabilitation Review Volume 10, No. 4, April 1999 Index INCLUSION OR SPECIAL ED? PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES AND THEIR PARENTS VOICE THEIR VIEWS Nilima Sonpal-Valias What educational settings do people with developmental disabilities prefer? Do their experiences suggest that the opportunities and environments in inclusive settings differ from those in special ed classes or segregated schools? If so, what impact do they think these differences had on preparing them for employment? These are some of the questions asked in a recent study conducted by the Developmental Disabilities Resource Centre of Calgary and the VRRI. Twenty-six people with disabilities who participated in this study had experienced inclusive educational settings as well as special ed classes and/or segregated schooling during the course of their educational careers. In this Review we report their, and in some cases, their parents views on the learning opportunities and social environments in these settings, particularly with respect to preparing students with disabilities for successful employment. The pros and cons of each setting Most of the experiences people had during their school yearshaving friends, being picked on, liking the interesting and fun classes, remembering the good teachers and not liking the strict onesdid not seem to depend on whether the person had an integrated placement, was in a special ed class or a segregated school. Many students with disabilities had friends with and without disabilities, and for the most part, they engaged in the same kinds of activities as we might expect students without disabilities to take part in.
