Until 1999, the federal government did a very poor job at maintaining web sites about safety and regulations for recreational boaters. As a result, this web page used to be a source of information on these subjects. However, the federal government now maintains a number of excellent web sites about the recreational boating regulations and safety. They can be found at the following link:

Please note that this is not a complete set of boating laws. This is the information published in the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Boating Regulations pamphlet. You may obtain further information by E-Mail or by contacting your local conservation warden or law enforcement authorities. Wisconsin boaters enjoy one of the finest recreational boating safety programs in the nation. To aid those in distress on our waters and to assure that the requirements of law are obeyed Wisconsin Conservation Wardens, many county sheriff's departments, municipal police departments and the U.S. Coast Guard have established marine enforcement patrols. Whenever your boat is approached by an authorized patrol boat displaying blue lights you shall reduce the boat speed to slow-no-wake speed and yield the right-of-way to the patrol boat. The operator of a boat shall stop when requested to by a law enforcement officer or patrol boat. These officers are charged with the responsibility of providing safety afloat. Law violators can expect enforcement action and conscientious boaters will find these officers helpful protectors of their recreation. The Law Enforcement Mission

Upcoming Classes The number of recreational boaters using Wisconsin's waterways has grown tremendously over the past decade. As our waterways become more crowded and the types of boats using the water become more varied, it is increasingly important for boaters to become educated on safe boating techniques and laws. Boating safety course graduates can help ensure healthy, happy, and safe voyages for years to come.
Course Objective
To reduce the potential for boat accidents, injuries and fatalities; to reduce the potential for conflict between different types of boating activities and other resource users; and to promote safe, responsible, and ethical use of the environment and our resources.

New Boating Safety Regulations Expected to Save Lives
January 18, 1999 TORONTO - David Anderson, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today unveiled changes to the regulatory framework governing recreational boating safety in Canada. The changes are designed to reduce the annual level of boating fatalities and accidents in Canada from their current levels of 200 and 6,000 respectively. "These are not "made-in-Ottawa" solutions," said Minister Anderson. Describing the extensive consultations that gave rise to the regulations, Minister Anderson stated, "They result from an extensive process of dialogue with Canadians who share an interest in making our waters safer. These individuals are the real architects of these common-sense and balanced measures." The new measures were presented to some 60 boating association representatives from across Canada at the Toronto International Boat Show. Highlights of the changes include the introduction of:
  • Minimum age limits for operating power boats above 10 horsepower and personal water craft
