CAN BELIZEANS INACT POLITICAL REFORM THAT WILL PREVENT ANY OF THE EFFECTS OF THE JAMAICAN FOUR DAY POLITICAL PARTY CIVIL WAR FROM HAPPENING, IN BELIZE AGAIN!
Produced by the Belize Development Trust

by Ray Auxillou July 12th, 2001. The four day civil war between the political parties of the Jamaican Labor Party and the ruling "winner take all British political system" ruling People's National Party is now over. At it's height, bodies lay in the streets for several days, swollen with gases, putrefying in the hot Caribbean Sun, as an object lesson by the People's National Party for the Labor party supporters. Over 3000 police and troops, including a helicopter gunship were used to fight supporters of the opposition Labor Party in the suburb of Tivoli Gardens. What troubles Jamaicans, is the inability of anybody to galvanize an alternative third party with political reform the goal. Ex-President Seaga is viewed as a power mad, megalomaniac, while Prime Minister, Patterson is viewed as a corrupt self serving greedy individual. " I am very disheartened, very ashamed at what has happened on the island," said Jamaican, Lola Miller, who works in a Miami-Dade bakery in Florida.

Register to Vote Iowa City, Iowa Reform Party Loses Official Party Status On February 17, 1999, the Iowa Secretary of State notified county auditors that as a result of the 1998 general election, the Reform Party lost its status as a recognized party under Iowa law. The Code of Iowa states that a party must win 2 percent of the vote for president or governor in each general election to maintain its status. According to final, official returns from the Iowa Secretary of State, 1998 Reform Party governor candidate Jim Hennager won 5,606 votes out of 956,415 cast (0.59%). Iowa voters may no longer register to vote as Reform. Voters previously registered with the Reform Party had their registration changed to no party (but were at any time able to re-register with another recognized party.) There was no Reform Party primary in 2000, and Reform candidates are now required to seek ballot status by petition. The Reform Party failed to regain ballot status in 2000, as presidential candidate Pat Buchanan received less than 2 percent of the statewide vote. No Reform candidates were on the 2002 ballot.

A note on the federal Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act The Michigan Department of State is offering the following general information regarding McConnell v Federal Election Commission www.fec.gov IMPACT ON THE MICHIGAN CAMPAIGN FINANCE ACT McConnell appears to affect the Michigan Campaign Finance Act (MCFA), or the duties of any state or local filing official. WHICH ASPECTS OF CAMPAIGN FINANCE DOES BCRA IMPACT? BCRA, as upheld by McConnell , concerned two major issues: The regulation of "soft money," including its use by state and local candidates, and the regulation of "issue advertising." Within the context of the federal law, certain state party activities that benefit federal candidates; state and local candidate communications concerning federal candidates; and electioneering communications are strictly regulated or prohibited. SOFT MONEY BCRA limits many political party activities that traditionally have been financed by "soft money." Soft money is money that, before BCRA, was raised by political parties without limitation as to source or amount under the Federal Election Campaign Act (FECA). "Hard money," by comparison, is money that is subject to the contribution limits and disclosure provisions of FECA. For example, an individual may contribute a maximum of $2,000 per election to a candidate for president of the United States. While corporations and labor organizations are prohibited from contributing "hard money" to candidates for federal office, their political action committees are not.

WASHINGTON – A sharply divided Supreme Court, upholding key features of the nation's new law intended to lessen the influence of money in politics, ruled Wednesday that the government may ban unlimited donations to political parties. Those donations, called "soft money" and totaling hundreds of millions of dollars, had become a mainstay of modern political campaigns, used to rally voters to the polls and to pay for sharply worded television ads. Congress may regulate campaign money to prevent the real or perceived corruption of political candidates, the court ruled in a 5-4 decision. That goal and most of the rules Congress drafted to meet it outweigh limitations on the free speech of candidates and others in politics, the majority said. At the same time, the court said the 2002 law would not stop the flow of campaign cash.

APP POLITICAL PARTIES By the 1790s, different views of the new country's proper course had already developed, and those who held these opposing views tried to win support for their cause by banding together. The followers of Alexander Hamilton called themselves Federalists; they favored a strong central government that would support the interests of commerce and industry. The followers of Thomas Jefferson called themselves Democratic-Republicans; they preferred a decentralized agrarian republic in which the federal government had limited power. By 1828, the Federalists had disappeared as an organization, replaced by the Whigs, brought to life in opposition to the election that year of President Andrew Jackson. The Democratic-Republicans became Democrats, and the two-party system, still in existence today, was born. New Federalist Papers: Essays in Defense of the Constitution The Media RETURN TO

The Political Fray
The 1992 Run For The Presidency
Privately, Perot was not an admirer of fellow Texan George Bush, who was elected President in 1988. He was adamantly opposed to American involvement in the Gulf War and urged senators to vote against the war resolution in the fall of 1990. By the late summer of 1991, with Bush still riding high in the polls in the afterglow of the successful outcome of Operation Desert Storm, Perot began to consider a run for the presidency. Perot did polling, contacted political experts and started to lay the groundwork for a national campaign. In what would become frequent appearances over the next four years, Perot used the medium of CNN's "Larry King Live!" on February 20, 1992 to communicate for the first time his intentions to run if his supporters succeeded in getting his name on all 50 state ballots. With the Democrats dickering between two candidates with major public flaws, former Senator Paul Tsongas and Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, Perot's poll numbers rose rapidly. On March 30, Perot named retired Navy Vice Admiral James Stockdale, an Annapolis graduate, a former POW and a lecturer at the Hoover Institute at Stanford University, his provisional Vice Presidential running mate. By April, 1992 he was clearly competitive with both President Bush and the presumptive Democratic nominee, Clinton. In several national polls, Perot was found to be in a statistical dead heat with both Bush and Clinton.

THE WASHINGTON TIMES
The national Reform Party announced yesterday that it will endorse Ralph Nader's presidential campaign, potentially putting the candidate on seven ballot lines, including those in the key states of Florida, Colorado and Michigan.
Mr. Nader will keep his independent status and platform even as he shares many of the Reform Party's goals, including stronger laws against corporate crime, the softening of foreign-trade agreements and environmental protection.
The Nader campaign and Reform Party heads will decide together which states their candidate will run in under the Reform banner.
"Ralph Nader is a man of peace, and we share many beliefs," Reform Party Chairman Shawn O'Hara said. "We have 1 million supporters and Ralph Nader has a way, with this party, to reach out and help people."
The Reform Party's political stature has diminished since it was created in 1995 by Texas billionaire Ross Perot. Running for president as the top third-party candidate in 1996, Mr. Perot drew 8 million votes, or 8.4 percent or the national total.
But by early 1999, the party was already fractured by internal power struggles. As the party divided, so did its pull. In 2000, Reform Party presidential candidate Pat Buchanan garnered a meager 449,000 votes.
