Paper Recycling Plastic Recycling Recycling is taking something like paper or plastic, after it's been used, and turning it into the same thing or something different. For example, white paper can be recycled into notebook paper. Notebook paper can later be recycled into newspaper. Plastic soda pop bottles might be recycled into a lot of different things, like the keyboard you're using right now. Or they might be turned into plastic boards used in park benches and bird feeders. The tires on your car can be recycled into tiny chips mixed into the asphalt road your bus takes to school.
    Why do we recycle?
We recycle to keep trash from going to the landfill . If we didn't, the landfill would fill up very quickly, and then we'd have to find space for another landfill, and that's not easy to do. After all, nobody wants to live next door to a landfill, because people think landfills stink. Besides, we'd rather use land to build houses on, or to use as parks and campgrounds.
    How does recycling work?

Email: trma@trma.com The Canadian Association of Tire Recycling Agencies includes representation from all Provinces and the Yukon Territory. Formed in 1999, CATRA's goal is to enhance the effectiveness of scrap tire diversion and recycling across Canada, through sharing of information, expertise and resources. Active tire recycling programs are now operating in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Quebec, Saskatchewan and the Yukon. The Province of Ontario is developing its system at the present time. CATRA's informal structure is aimed at streamlining the exchange of technical and program information among its participants. Each of the existing programs came on line at different times over the past decade. While sharing some similarities, they have developed in various ways to respond to different circumstances. Some operate as a component of the provincial government concerned. Others focus on a stewardship model, with industry stakeholders sharing responsibility through an external Board of Directors. Regardless of their approach, each jurisdiction offers a key resource of experience and expertise within the flexible CATRA system. Beyond its focus on information exchange, CATRA can also serve as an umbrella organization to address tire recycling issues with inter-provincial or national ramifications. Joint research activity involving various participants may be undertaken as well. Other areas for potential collaboration include national and international communications on Canada's approach in this rapidly changing field.

Recycling saves trees. This is one of the first environmental lessons children learn, but it's only part of the story. Recycling also protects habitat, reduces the need for landfills, and curbs pollution. NRDC promotes increased recycling, with a special focus on New York City, where we work to improve and monitor the city's curbside pickup program. We also seek to expand the national market for recycled materials. NRDC was instrumental in persuading the federal government to demand paper with at least 30 percent postconsumer recycled content from its suppliers, a step that dramatically increased demand for recycled paper. Today we are pressing New York and other cities to follow suit, to spur even more demand and create new incentives for recycled products.

Recently released data Over the last four decades, the damages from aluminum manufacturing and associated infrastructure include thousand of square miles of habitat loss on every major continent, the displacement of tens of thousands of indigenous people, and the release of tens of millions of tons of greenhouse gasses and other toxic air and water pollutants. While we are steadily trashing millions of tons of cans that could be used to make new cans and other aluminum products, multi-national companies like Alcoa and Alcan are forging ahead to build new aluminum smelters in pristine environments all over the world, including Brazil, Australia, Mozambique, and Iceland. If we recycled 85% of our cans instead, as we could with a national beverage container deposit law, or "bottle bill," we could save about 600 thousand tons of aluminum metal—eliminating the need to build one or two brand new aluminum smelters.

Finding Solutions For Complex Waste Disposal Problems. Nuisance tire piles pose severe health threats that endanger the public and the environment in 3 distinct ways. First, they are perfect for tiger mosquitoes and other insects to lay their larvae. Mosquitoes need water to do this and a tremendous amount of water collects in these tires. The problem worsens if the tires are near wetlands or rivers. Preventative maintenance of the tire piles save taxpayer dollars because counites don't have to spend quite as much to reduce mosquitoe infestations. Also, reduces the toxic effect of deadly insecticides used to control mosquitoes.

Chuck digs into a worm box
(he forgot to smile, but is friendly) We currently have 4 worm boxes, so most of our vegetable waste goes to feeding the worms or directly into our compost piles. When the worms are done with it, this newly created soil is sifted out, and left to age a while. Then we take it to our greenhouse and mix it with garden soil, and a variety of other ingredients to make both potting soil and to augment Songaia's organic gardens
