64. Comfort In A Strange Season
I hope you will enjoy my new recipes, and I hope cooking will bring you as much comfort as it does for me during this strange time. Home.

Fall 2001: Comfort in a Strange Season by The week of the attacks I found myself making big bowls of homemade ricotta, something I hadn't done for a long time. They came out so well, I've developed a little group of fall recipes using the gentle cheese. Ricotta is one of three rather humble, some would even say boring, ingredients I've chosen to experiment with this fall. The other two are onions and hard autumn squashes. These are among the workhorses of the Italian cold-weather table. Coddling elevates dishes made from them from clunky to warmly glamorous. I hope you will enjoy my new recipes, and I hope cooking will bring you as much comfort as it does for me during this strange time. Home

Strange Wine
Humans are by nature curious creatures, and wine is one of our earliest discoveries. So it is natural to assume that we have experimented with several ways of making wine over the ages. Grapes are the most common source of wine in modern culture, but other fruit wines can also be found in abundance. Mead , a honey-based wine, is also quite popular. And we occasionally hear references to somewhat more exotic wines, like rosehip wine . American winemakers have been particularly innovative, especially in regions which are not conducive to growing grapes of the noble variety (cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, etc.). Dandelion wine is a popular choice. Need a recipe to make your own? Try one of these: Some friends of ours began delving into the art of home winemaking a couple years back. When they sent us a bottle of their ginger wine, I was pleasantly surprised When they told me they had tried to make a basil wine, I was mildly puzzled, but intrigued. When they created a batch of coffee wine and then sent us a bottle I was downright frightened. How far must we push the envelope? As a scientist, I applaud efforts to discover new and exciting possibilities. But

MP loses his head over April Fool's
Taken in: Tim Loughton failed to see the funny side
A Tory MP was made to look a first class chump after falling for an April Fool's joke in a national newspaper.
Cambridge-educated Tim Loughton, MP for East Worthing, was contacted by worried constituents after an article appeared in the Sunday Times saying the Royal Mail was taking the Queen's head off its stamps. The establishment broadsheet was tickled pink with its spoof, which went on to say "Polo"-style stamps with holes were being introduced as a replacement to appeal to "feng shui enthusiasts." Mr Loughton, who has been a powerful voice in the campaign against the closure of rural post offices, failed to see the funny side and took the matter straight to the top.

Liz Jensen's second novel, Ark Baby, is a dark, randy, and riotous romp back to the future featuring twin plot lines as tightly twisted as a double helix. The novel (if not the story) kicks into gear on New Year's Eve 1999 when a sudden, heavy rainfall over Britain signals the end of fertility on the Emerald Isle; with the turn of the millennium, every last specimen of British womanhood is rendered mysteriously barren. In the aftermath of this event, child-starved couples start turning to lower primates to satisfy their baby lust; enter veterinarian Bobby Sullivan, the hapless hero of Jensen's quirky meditation on evolution and survival of the fittest. After accidentally killing a client's beloved macaque monkey and being charged with murder, Bobby escapes to a remote northern seaside town called Thunder Spit and eventually gets involved with two, slightly hirsute twins whom he manages to impregnatethe first fertile women in England since the millennium.
