Vegan Foods
When I first started looking into vegetarianism and then veganism, I chose to explore a new type of cooking or a new type of food every week. Indian one week, recipes for this strange grain called "quinoa" the next. Thai, seitan, Middle Eastern, nutritional yeast. Soon, I had a menu that far far exceeded my previous, omnivorous diet, in both diversity and taste. Erik Marcus Vegan: The New Ethics of Eating

What do vegans eat?
For those who prefer not to cook, there are a wide variety of packaged foods from which to choose: frozen dinners; canned and dehydrated soups, stews, and chilies; items of all sorts for quick and easy sandwiches like vegan dogs and burgers, deli slices, bacons, sausages, untuna and unchicken salads, and soy and rice cheeses; and delicious desserts including soy yogurts and ice creams. The variety is growing every year. You may even find that your local health food store has its own deli counter, stocked with prepared foods.

    Introdution
Its not easy reproducing recipes from old cook books, or should I say translating them. These recipes came from authentic handwritten 'receipt' books of the eighteenth century. It is not just the ingredients which are strange to the modern eye - although many of them seem strange enough - 'Cowcumbers' may be obvious, but how many of us now use 'orringoe' roots, or 'shivred pallats'? There is also a tendency to not explain much in the way of weights and measures - some recipes just call for 'sugar' and '2 or 3 eggs'. These receipts were well known to these women, as was cooking. They new the proportions needed and so they need not spell things out in their own handwritten books. There is also a complete lack of temperature and cooking times - well that's fairly obvious. The first closed stoves were not really in use until the early nineteenth century anyway. To measure temperature was futile, just as a cook would time it according to what she knew.

Strange sandwiches
Once the preserve of the heavily pregnant, strange sandwiches have turned into something of a national obsession. iVillage investigates... A little while back we asked if anyone had any ideas for unusual, exotic or even strange sandwiches. We expected to get one or two odd suggestions, we never doubted that there'd be the occasional `You can't be serious!' moment, but we were woefully unprepared for some of the recipes you posted. What follows is not for the faint of heart (or weak of stomach). advertisement The tone was set by erimar59, who was kind enough to suggest a meal-sized marriage of mushy peas, stuffing and salad cream. Apparently, it's lovely (but we couldn't find anyone willing to try it). However, as soon as we got to the crisp combinations there were unseemly scuffles in the kitchen, with everyone pitching in a suggestion or three. Our very own food expert Craig Glenday expanded everyone's horizons with his patented Monster Munch Mulch, a tempting combination of white bread, corn snacks and a wee spread of butter (a bit like our Craig, in fact). When feeling especially adventurous, Craig has even been known to slip some tuna fish and a couple of cherry tomatoes between the slices. Nice.

Follow the gospel according to Steven with the Ten Commandments of Grilling Make sure that your BBQ is both tasty and safe with our Cook it Safe Calculator If you like our barbeque sauce recipes, you'll love our tips for marinades and rubs
Barbecue Sauce
by Steven Raichlen
Sauce is the lifeblood of barbecue. This statement might be disputed by a few ornery Texans (who would argue that the essence of true barbecue is the long, slow smoking of beef). But for just about everyone else, barbecue simply isn't barbecue without the sauce. The problem is, which sauce? Sauces vary from region to region, stirring strong emotions when local traditions are violated. You could no sooner serve a sweet, sticky Kansas City style sauce to a North Carolina pig picker than you could a South Carolina mustard sauce to a Texas brisket buff. I hope the following sauces start your gastric and creative juices flowing. I encourage you to "doctor" the recipes to create sauces of your own. Hey, if you want to cook with the big boys, you have to have your own barbecue sauce. I'm sure even a Texan would agree with that.

April 21, 2004 Today we feature a simple casserole recipe that was sent to us by Lydia Pisani of Palm Desert. She calls her creation Crazy Chicken. As you can see the odd combination of ingredients lends itself to the name Crazy Chicken.
I checked out several other recipes that I found that were called Crazy Chicken and they were all different variations of chicken with sauces and mixes and various ingredients that didn’t seem to match. They all looked good but I think this recipe was the best and easiest of all that I came across.
Give this recipe a try and have fun with it. It may not be too crazy after all.

Welcome To Strange Books Strange Books was more or less founded in 1999, when we got married. We had these great ideas for cookbooks, but most of them were shelved (literally) until 2002. Now they're flowing out of our offices and into publishing houses as fast as we can write them. Our only delay now waiting for the books themselves to arrive. Here's a quick preview of what we'll have available. Foods For a Full Moon This book is dedicated to foods that are historically and metaphysically linked to the power of the full moon. Each of the 100 or so recipes is accompanied by a moon fact, either scientific or spiritual. Sun Foods is the companion to the above book, just as the Moon and Sun are linked. It features recipes and trivia specific to the Great Burning Orb. Every Day is a Holiday came about by accident; I was surfing around doing research and I stumbled across a list of funny holidays. Most of them were food-related. After a bit more looking, I was able to match up a holiday with almost every day of the year. So have some fun celebrating non-traditional holidays and eating good food. Cooking in Dante's Inferno is a cookbook for all you chileheads out there! The recipes parallel Scoville units with the various levels of Hell.

STRANGE WATER - MONO LAKE GOURMET
    By David Carle, Park Ranger
    Mono Lake Tufa State Reserve
"Good morning! We have two very unusual recipes for today's program, so grab your measuring cups and spoons and prepare to make: 'Mock Mono Lake Soup" and "Tufa Porridge Extraordinaire.' Sounds yummy? As always, we offer only the unique and highly seasoned on the Mono Lake Recipes Show.
"Ingredients! Mock Mono Lake Soup can be made with normal items you keep around the house, but I'll list the ingredients slowly to give you time to gather them together. Some of these things are not generally kept in the kitchen. Mono Lake has been busily accumulating its various ingredients for over 700,000 years, we figure, so speed is obviously not of the essence.
"Oh, yes, you'll need some sort of closed container. Something that will hold the ingredients in place, creating the perfect environment for a highly seasoned soup. No seives, you understand. The Mono Basin has no outlet; neither should your bowl.
"So, those ingredients: as you see, we have fresh clean water, direct from the tap. And regular old table salt (sodium chloride, to you chemistry buffs). Then some baking soda; this is very critical to both recipes we are preparing. Do you recall its chemical name, "sodium bicarbonate?" Yes, it is that bitter stuff that helps you burp and feel better when your tummy's upset. Mono Lake is loaded with baking soda. And then, some epsom salts (magnesium sulfate, that is), along with a little borax. Finally, just a pinch of a phosphate-containing laundry soap.

    FISH RECIPES
    AS IN 'FISH'
I like fish. And, I have yet to find a bad one. Like Daddy always said about girls, "They're all good." And, most fish are edible. Carp are a delicacy in Europe and the Far East. Mudfish (Grindle to you Southern folks) have firm white flesh and, if the water they come from is not stagnant, a very good flavor. In Korea and Viet Nam, I saw some strange fish cooked in some strange ways. All I tried were surprisingly good. However, the best rule I found was, "If you have to ask what it is, you don't want it." Sort of like the sign at Scroungy Harry's Grill, "You can eat dirt cheap here." And, sometimes you did.
The best fish are those that bite my lure. The 'next best' are those done to a golden brown and served on a platter with a couple of lemon wedges on the side. Here are some of those 'next best'. There some other fish recipes that follow that are done on the grill and on a smoker. They are particularly appropriate if fried foods are your 'no-no'.
    YOUR BASIC SOUTHERN FISH FRY
2 cups yellow or white corn meal 1 tblsp garlic salt
1 tsp black pepper peanut oil, 2-3 inches deep

Recipes Pljeskavica Muchkalica "Dragi Bure" Pork Steak in Lambrequin for Two Text and Photos by Kristian Kahrs Lost in a fog of barbecue smoke, this skinny Norwegian journalist finally found his way to the biggest barbecue festival in the Balkans. In one week in September, I was exposed to more meat–strange meatthan I have ever seen in my life. Serbia is one of those nations famous for its love of meat, and the little southern city of Leskovac is considered the meat capital of Serbia. I was there to cover their annual barbecue festival and maybe even win a heifer. Usually, 20,000 visitors come to the festival every day. However, this year the organizers were cursed by pouring rainout of seven days, the weather ruined two of them. Still, even with the number of visitors reduced, forty-eight BBQ chefs competed to win the palates of the visitors. The people of Leskovac believe that they are world champions in the art of barbecue, even if they define it a bit differently than Americans. Are they right? What do I know? But I do know that they are very proud of their meat and their barbecue traditions. Everyone wanted to feed me to prove that they had the best meat, and I had to eat all the time, if I wanted to or not. I almost started missing my mother’s vegetables, but only almost. I am the first to admit that I’m an amateur in the field of barbecue, but I know when I taste something good. The meat was so tender that it seemed to melt on my tongue.
